Fears simmer in Essequibo region as Venezuela eyes the disputed territory
Essequibo residents express anxiety as Venezuela advances its claims over the region, largely seen as part of Guyana.

An electric sign, lit up with the colours of the Guyanese flag, says: "Essequibo is we own." Behind the sign is the faint glow of daylight.

Wakapoa, Guyana – The threat had always been there, ever since Lloyd Perreira was a young child: that one day his ancestral home could be absorbed into the neighbouring country of Venezuela.

A member of the Lokono Indigenous people, Perreira considers his home Essequibo, a vast territory on the western flank of Guyana. He grew up in Wakapoa, a village composed of 16 islands on the Pomeroon River, nestled in the heart of the region.

“Even as a small boy, I remember hearing Venezuela saying Essequibo is theirs,” Perreira said. “But I also know I live in Essequibo, and as an Indigenous person, Essequibo is ours.”

Perreira is now the toshoa, or chief, of Wakapoa. But his childhood fears returned when Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro recently held a referendum to claim Essequibo as his country’s own.

“We were very scared when we saw the referendum,” Perreira said, as he picked a harvest of rare liberica coffee beans.

The Full Court last month ruled that Scotiabank (Guyana) “negligently misdirected” $28 million paid by Core Investments Inc which was intended as the early extinguishing of a mortgage.

Ezoic
The bank has been ordered to apply the $28m as originally intended and in addition it has to pay Core Investments Inc $1m in damages and $1m in costs.

The judgment handed down on December 1st 2023 by Justices Navindra Singh and Priya Sewnarine-Beharry set aside the judgment of Justice Damone Younge on February 15, 2023. The Full Court was also scathing in its criticism of Scotiabank (Guyana).

The property at the centre of the litigation was owned by Justin Teixeira, who was reported to have died by su***de back in April of 2022—close to a month after striking the business deal with Core Investments Inc.

Two men are now dead and two others seriously injured following a fight early Sunday morning at a party hosted at Victoria, East Coast Demerara (ECD).

Dead are Yoffi Bobb, a 24-year-old mason of Victoria, ECD and William Montrose, a 26-year-old miner/construction worker of Sideline Dam, Victoria, ECD.

Delex Skeete, a 25-year-old plumber and Siyani McFarlene, a 19-year-old mason, are seriously injured.

Police Headquarters reported that Bobb, Skeete and McFarlene were at a party at Victoria, ECD, after 01:45 hrs Sunday morning and they allegedly attacked Montrose and took away his gold chain.

During this attack, Bobb and the others reportedly dealt Montrose several stabs about his body. Montrose then left the party but returned with a cutlass and dealt all three men chops about their bodies. He then fled the scene.

Bobb and the two others were escorted to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where Bobb was pronounced dead while the other two were admitted as patients.

Skeete’s condition is regarded as serious while McFarlene’s condition is regarded as stable. Bobb’s body was examined and severe wounds were seen to the right side shoulder.

Sometime after, Police Officers combed the area of the scene and discovered Montrose’s body in a trench about 500 feet north of the scene. His body was facing upwards and when taken out of the trench, it was observed that there were several wounds about his body (on his forehead, one to the left side upper chest, and two to the right side jaw).

A knife was also found tucked in his left side waist.

The body was escorted to the Georgetown Public Hospital and pronounced dead. Several persons were questioned as investigations continue.

Venezuela arrests opposition figure, issues warrants for staffers for treason in referendum over Guyana’s territory of Essequibo

By Vivian Sequera and Sabrina Valle

December 6, 2023

BOGOTA/HOUSTON, Dec 6 (Reuters) - Venezuela on Wednesday arrested an opposition member for alleged treason, after the attorney general said earlier there are arrest warrants out for several people connected to the campaign of opposition presidential nominee Maria Corina Machado for crimes including treason.

A lawyer for Machado's Vente Venezuela party said earlier in the day the staffers have always acted correctly.

The wife of Roberto Abdul, a member of the commission which planned the primary where Machado was elected the opposition's 2024 candidate, has confirmed his arrest, Alfredo Romero, head of non-governmental organization Foro Penal said on social media. Foro Penal regularly defends political prisoners.

Abdul had previously been interviewed by authorities in connection with a criminal investigation into the primary, which the opposition has said was transparent and fair.

There are also arrest warrants for Henry Alviarez, Claudia Macero and Pedro Urruchurtu for crimes including treason, conspiracy and money laundering, Attorney General Tarek Saab said on state television in the afternoon.

The three staffers, along with Abdul, took part in "destabilizing and conspiratorial actions" against a recent referendum vote over a territorial dispute with Guyana, Saab said.

Voters in the referendum, backed by the government of President Nicolas Maduro, rejected an international court's jurisdiction over the long-running dispute and supported the creation of a new Venezuelan state in the Esequibo region, much to the chagrin of Guyana, which has questioned the vote's legitimacy.

The four people and allies abroad used "financing from money laundering by international organizations and foreign companies like Exxon Mobil" for their activities, Saab said, without providing more details

Letter to the Editor: THE DESECRATION OF OUR NATIONAL FLAG MUST BE CONDEMNED - Ganesh Mahipaul, M.P.

DEAR EDITOR

The sanctity of a national flag transcends its physical form; it embodies the collective spirit, history, and aspirations of a nation. The Golden Arrowhead of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana is not merely a combination of colors on a piece of cloth; it is a powerful symbol of nationhood that unites the citizens under a common identity.

The desecration of our national flag is an act that cannot be tolerated. Whether displayed on a flagpole or adorned on a wall, the flag demands reverence. However, the recent incident at the opening of the Heroes Highway, where President Irfaan Ali and his cabinet were observed walking on the painted representation of the national flag on the ground, is nothing short of a blatant disregard for the values it represents.

This reprehensible act is not just disrespectful; it is disgraceful and warrants unequivocal condemnation from every citizen who holds the ideals of the nation dear. The image of the President, the Prime Minister, and other members of the Cabinet walking on the national flag is a stain on the integrity of our nation.

It is with a heavy heart that we must express our deep disappointment in President Irfan Ali and his entire Cabinet for their role in this disrespectful act. Such behavior from the highest echelons of leadership sets a deplorable precedent and undermines the very foundation of our national identity.

In the face of such a disgraceful act, there can be no compromise. We, as citizens, must demand and insist that those responsible for this act of disrespect step down from their positions. The President and his Cabinet have failed in their duty to uphold the sanctity of our national symbols, and as such, they should immediately resign.

This incident goes beyond mere politics; it strikes at the core of our shared identity as a nation. We cannot allow such disregard for our national symbols.

ARAU RESIDENT REJECTS REQUEST BY VENEZUELAN MEDIA TO REMOVE POSTER OF PRESIDENT DR. IRFAAN ALI ON HER WALL

A Venezuelan media group currently in Guyana is being accused of trying to create propaganda material for whoever sent them.

It is not clear if it is the same media group that President Dr. Irfaan Ali exposed with their jaundiced line of questioning at the recent opening of the ‘Heroes Highway’ on the East Bank of Demerara.

Action News Guyana was informed by residents of Arau that a media team was in their community conducting interviews. Media freedom is respected in Guyana as opposed to the nearby authoritarian State. However, this incident shows how it can be abused.

One resident related an experience yesterday during an interview with the media team at her home. Action News Guyana was told that the line of questioning was aimed at gathering comments as to if residents were frustrated with any aspect of life in their community. They were pointedly asked if they wouldn’t mind now that Venezuela is taking over Essequibo. The resident was adamant that they are proud Guyanese and that Essequibo is part of Guyana.

This apparently irked the media team who then turned their attention to a poster of President Ali, “… you know what I have our President on the wall and they want to know what I am doing with it on the wall. I told them he is my President and my children have to know who is the Guyana President and them want me to take it down but I told them no.”

“I got angry with them…they don't have the right to tell me what I should be doing in my country.”

The media team left the interview dissatisfied.

The mountain where President Ali recently hoisted the Golden Arrow Head is located in the community of Arau, Region 7.

BREAKING ONE DAY Ago: Police investigators are on the scene at Durban and Cemetery Road in Georgetown after a gunman opened fire on a vehicle, just as popular journalist Travis Chase was stepping out of it.

Chase told News Source that he was forced to run for cover when the gunshots rang out.

He said the gunman was riding a motorcycle and made good his escape after firing multiple shots.

Chase said he did not notice anyone following him as he drove to the location to visit a relative.

The incident happened just after 7:30pm. A full probe is underway.

Three years ago, a new vehicle owned by Chase was maliciously set on fire in a Government compound near to the same Durban Street location, where he parked it at nights.

There was never any arrest in that case.

President Dr Irfaan Ali hailed the late Retired Justice Prem Persaud as an outstanding public servant who was a rare gem who contributed selflessly in service to his country.

The President made the statement as he joined hundreds of Guyanese to bid farewell to Justice Persaud today at his home in Prashad Nagar.

He described the former Judge and Chairman of the Public Utilities Commission as an outstanding citizen of Guyana who had dedicated many decades of his life in service to Guyana.

“This is something that is very rare in our country and in the world. Persons of this ilk are rarely found in today’s society.”

Several cabinet ministers and Government officials were also at the service.
