US-BASED GUYANESE PRESENTS GADGETS, SCHOOL SUPPLIES TO STUDENTS OF ALMA MATER
Former student of St. Gabriel’s Primary School Dr. Michelle Gill on Friday made a significant contribution to the school and students of the city institution.
Through Michelle’s Foundation, which has been active for the last 13 years, Dr. Gill presented 30 electronic tablets to boost the school’s computer literacy programme, while dozens of students received backpacks, loaded with stationery supplies.
Dr. Gill said she was motivated to give back to the school, simply because the institution, located in Queenstown, Georgetown, played a significant role in her upbringing and development.
Additionally, the school also received a microwave from Secure Innovations and Concepts Inc.
Headmistress Shonnette Pompey expressed gratitude to the benefactors, noting that the items received will advance the learning process at the school.
COURTS OPTICAL PEE WEE FOOTBALL KICKS OFF SEPTEMBER 21
A draft list of 35 schools has been assembled for the annual Courts Optical Pee Wee football tournament, starting September 21 at the Ministry of Education ground, Carifesta Avenue, Georgetown.
The 11th Under-11 competition was officially launched on Friday afternoon in the city, with the Petra Organisation unveiling details of the competition at Courts Main Street location.
The tournament, which was won by St. Pius Primary in 2023, will conclude on November 2.
At the launch, stakeholder representatives spoke on the importance of the tournament in shaping the next generation of players.

GOV’T TO UNVEIL SPECIAL DEVELOPMENT ZONES WITH TAX-FREE INCENTIVES IN BUDGET 2025
Special development zones, which could have tax-free incentives for investors, are being developed by the government in key areas across Guyana and President Dr. Irfaan Ali said these spaces could be identified in the 2025 National Budget. This venture is part of the government’s plans to diversify the economy, with a specific focus on the manufacturing sector. In an interview with the News Room on Friday, President Ali said new legislation is likely to be introduced to pave the way for the development of these zones.
US EXIM BANK LOAN - ‘DUE DILIGENCE’ COMPLETE
Consultants were in Guyana assessing the Gas-to-Energy project at Wales, West Bank Demerara (WBD) for the United States Export-Import (EXIM) Bank. With the process of “due diligence” now complete, Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo says the country’s request for funds could be taken to the Board for approval sometime in October. The Gas-to-Energy project—which includes the four gas turbines and two steam turbines—is expected to provide about 300 megawatts (MW) of power, using natural gas brought onshore through an ExxonMobil pipeline.
JAGDEO CONTINUES TO FLAG DELAYS IN ELECTIONS FRAUD TRIAL
The fraud trial into the 2020 General and Regional Elections has been beset by numerous delays and on Thursday, Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo questioned whether some of the accused persons and parties were benefiting from preferential treatment from members of the judiciary. Jagdeo, the General Secretary of the governing People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C), emphasised that the government has no control over the judiciary. As such, it does not dictate when cases are tried. However, he said the PPP is ready to see the case unfold

TRUCKS CAN NO LONGER PARK AT RUIMVELDT RESERVE
Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill has prohibited trucks that have been utilising the reserve at Ruimveldt to ply their trade, mainly for the sale of sand. This, he said has resulted in disruption in the daily operation of nearby businesses. Edghill made the announcement after engaging truck drivers on Thursday. The move comes after several warnings. Edghill said signs and barricades will be placed at the sites and failure to comply with the order will result in the trucks being impounded.
LINDENERS WARNED AGAINST SQUATTING, CONSEQUENCES FOR FUTURE TRANSACTIONS
In a move to curb illegal land occupation, Chief Executive Officer of the Central Housing and Planning Authority Sherwyn Greaves, has issued a stern warning to individuals involved in unauthorised land activities in Amelia’s Ward/Fitz Hope, Linden. During an unannounced visit to the area on Thursday, Greaves expressed grave concerns over the recent surge in illegal land occupations and unauthorised constructions on residential lots. The CEO’s visit was triggered by troubling reports of individuals unlawfully selling these allocated lots, misleading buyers to apply through the agency and falsely claiming occupancy dating back to 2017. In a clear message to those affected, Greaves cautioned that any illegal structures built on these lands are at risk of demolition.
Director of Projects at the Guyana Water Inc. (GWI) Marlon Daniels has said that within the next two to three years, new water distribution lines would be installed across the entire City, replacing the ones that have been installed as way back as the 1930s. He spoke to the News Room about the Georgetown Transmission and Distribution Replacement Project on Thursday at his GWI office on Vlissengen Road, Georgetown. Over the last three years since the replacement project started, Daniels said that the government has made available just about 1 ½ billion dollars each year to focus on works in the city, so that all of the lines can eventually be replaced.
By the end of 2024, mid-2025 the latest, the country’s entire coastline – from the Essequibo Coast up to the Corentyne Coast – is expected to be served with treated water by the Guyana Water Inc. (GWI) under the Water Treatment Infrastructure Improvement Project. Notably, among the treatment plants that are to be constructed are those at Leguan and Wakenaam that will ensure both islands receive wholesome water. Over the last three years, GWI Projects Officer Marlon Daniels told the News Room that the government has made a tremendous amount of money available for the company to invest in treated water coverage across the coastland.

FUTURE WARRIORS ‘CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS’ A HAVEN FOR TALENT SPOTTING
CEO of FL Sport John Ramsingh is encouraging cricket clubs to witness this weekend’s Future Warriors ‘Champion of Champions’ competition at the GCC ground, Bourda, noting that it is a haven for talent spotting.
Winners of the three county competitions, Stella Maris Primary (Demerara), Cropper Primary (Berbice) and Huis T’ Dieren (Essequibo) will be the three participating schools on September 14.
The teams will play each other in a double round-robin format, followed by a final in the eight-over-per-side contest.
Ramsingh believes it is a great opportunity for clubs to scout talents, as he reflected on the skill level that was on display in the county tournaments.
OVER 700 ATHLETES ON SHOW AT AMERINDIAN HERITAGE GAMES 2024
Over 700 athletes are competing in the annual showpiece- Amerindian Heritage Games 2024.
Coordinator of Amerindian Heritage Month activities Mohamed Nazim said five days of intense rivalry are anticipated, as the various regions square off for top honours.
Nazim touched on the challenges of putting together an event of this magnitude and ensuring the athletes and officials are transported safely from the hinterland regions to the city.
He noted that significant work, resources and investment have been pumped into making this year’s event a success.
