Chinese Supermarkets: The Most Hazardous Buildings in Guyana?
Are Chinese Supermarkets Fire Hazards?
Are Chinese Supermarkets the most hazardous buildings in Guyana? The question may be hyperbole, but Guyanese are noticing that many Chinese supermarkets seem to ignore the building code and make illegal extensions to the properties they rent. These modifications endanger businesses and residents in the area. It's no wonder that Chinese Supermarkets and stores have been involved in many of the largest multi-building fires across Guyana over the last few years. While Local businesses are also guilty of these infringements, some have been held accountable. Meanwhile, Chinese stores are aggressively expanding into communities across Guyana with no apparent regulation.
Ozempic is Being Smuggled into Guyana for Weight Loss
OZEMPIC IN GUYANA? WHO DO YOU THINK IS USING IT?
Ozempic is being smuggled into Guyana for weight loss by clinics and black-market traders. Unregistered drugs are prohibited from being imported or sold in Guyana. Regardless, the diabetic drug Ozempic is being sold to consumers who can afford it. Ozempic is allegedly imported by a licensed distributor and illegally smuggled in by black market traders. Ozempic's high price per dose indicates that the illegal trade is driven by demand from the upper class of Guyana. Guyanese have also observed dramatic weight loss in some popular public figures, leading to rumours about Ozempic's use among the rich and famous.
Guyana's Passport Office is Backward in 2024
THE PASSPORT OFFICE IS BACKWARD!
The Central Immigration and Passport Office is backward in 2024. Guyanese waste hours every day waiting to process their passport applications. The facilities at the passport office are inconvenient and inhospitable. The waiting room does not use modern crowd management methods or tools. The washrooms at the passport office are filthy and hazardous for the hundreds of people who need to use them daily. When public facilities and systems don't function properly, people rely on corruption and bribery.
President Irfaan Ali Should Defend Local Businesses Too
President Irfaan Ali defended Guyanese businesses in Brooklyn and Queens after his visit. While the NY issue was triggered by political contentions, there are important struggles to point out at home. We've demonstrated that Chinese businesses that ignore local laws negatively impact the local business environment. Local businesses hope the President's message of opportunity and prosperity includes them.

Chinese Stores are Violating Guyana's Food and Drug Laws
Chinese Stores Are Violating Guyana's Food and Drug Laws
Many Chinese supermarkets and stores sell food items that break Guyana's Food and Drug regulations. Some stores have been found selling prescription-only medications on the shelves. The Chinese stores selling these products are endangering public health and undermining local businesses that serve the same market. The Government Analyst Food and Drug Department (GA-FDD) is inadequately performing its duty to protect citizens from substandard products and improve industry competitiveness. The Ministry of Health's Pharmacy Board is also on the hook for letting Chinese stores sell prescription-only medication on their shelves.

Chinese Stores Protected By Guyana Police Force
CHINESE INTERESTS PROTECTED BY THE GUYANA POLICE FORCE
After a wave of robberies and attacks by bandits, the Chinese Ambassador to Guyana, Guo Haiyan, raised concerns with the government and the local police regarding the security of hundreds of Chinese nationals in Guyana. Her comments came one day after she met with Commissioner of Police (ag) Clifton Hicken and other senior officers of the Guyana Police Force. “We will work closely to remind Chinese citizens here to increase precautions and take more measures to protect themselves… the life and interest of Chinese nationals and, of course, all people living here in Guyana,” Ambassador Guo said. All businesses deserve to operate in a safe environment. However, citizens and the business community question the fairness of taxpayer funds used to protect companies that don't pay their due taxes.

Venezuelan Crime Rising In Guyana
VENEZUELAN CRIME ON THE RISE
Minister of Home Affairs Robeson Benn expressed concerns about the notable increase of Venezuelan nationals within the prison population, describing it as the most rapidly expanding demographic. More Venezuelan migrants coming to Guyana is correlated with an increase in crime from that demographic. We must acknowledge that these incidents do not necessarily represent the majority of Venezuelan migrants. They merely represent the inevitable symptom of uncontrolled migration. Interestingly, the narrative about Venezuelan migrants hasn't been affected in the same way as other migrant groups like Chinese, Cubans, and Haitians. Notably, visa restrictions were imposed on Cuban and Haitian migrants due to suspicions of their involvement in human trafficking and other illegal activities.
Chinese Supermarkets Selling Illegal Goods In Guyana
CHINESE SELLING ILLEGAL GOODS?
As Chinese supermarkets dominate the Guyanese retail landscape, people are beginning to notice that the new competition isn't as fair as it seems on the surface. Chinese supermarkets are stocking and selling illegal goods, which would cause local supermarkets serious legal trouble. Additionally, shoppers have noticed that many Chinese establishments do not give receipts freely and that the receipts lack VAT registration and VAT amounts as required by law. Is this the tip of the unlawful iceberg for Chinese Supermarkets in Guyana? Stay tuned to the Chinese Takeover Docuseries for more!
Guyana is Killing Calypso
GUYANA IS KILLING CALYPSO
Reviewing the 2024 Calypso Competitions, Neil Marks of News Room and many Guyanese commented on the competition's lack of more controversial social commentary. Creativity and controversy are absent from Calypso in Guyana because the genre's biggest platform is controlled by the government, calypsonians prefer to play it safe and junior calypsonians are trained to avoid controversy. Let's examine why the genre is dying and how Guyanese can save it from destruction.
Guyanese Teachers are Selfish and Don't Care About Students? (REACTION)
Many people believe that Guyana Teachers' Union and teachers are selfish for striking and not remaining in the classroom. However, the teachers believe they deserve better and many Guyanese agree with them.

Chinese Supermarkets Are Taking Over Guyana
Chinese supermarkets are taking over Guyana!
A table counting the number of Chinese supermarkets vs local supermarkets in areas across Guyana went viral on Facebook. It revealed that Chinese supermarkets outnumbered local supermarkets in almost every area. Some people think that any Chinese success should be celebrated as Guyanese success because they assume that the Chinese immigrants are Guyanese people by default. Others are alarmed at the rapidly growing market share of the Chinese supermarkets, driving local corner shops out of business.

How the Guyana Teachers' Strike Became Political
NATIONWIDE TEACHERS' STRIKE IS POLITICAL?
The Guyana Teachers' Strike became political after a flurry of exchanges between the Guyana Teachers' Union and the government. State media and other media houses have embarked on a smear campaign against the GTU and teachers across Guyana. The GTU says teachers are striking because the government has failed to engage in collective bargaining since 2020. Meanwhile, the government claims that the teachers are striking because they were instigated by the opposition APNU/AFC. Is the strike politically motivated, or are teachers fair to ask for better wages amidst the rising cost of living?
The Guyana Government Doesn't Want to Pay Linden Nurses
LINDEN NURSES ARE FED UP!
Linden Nurses are fed up after not receiving the full salary for several nurses who were protesting over their working conditions and calling for the removal of the then-CEO Rudolph Small.
The Guyana Government is moving to appeal a High Court ruling that found the deduction of payments for nurses involved in a protest over their working conditions unlawful. This means the case has been going on for 3 years without the Linden nurses receiving payment.
Guyana's Healthcare sector is no stranger to controversies about wages and working conditions. Incidents like this may be bad for Guyana's Healthcare sector because nurses see the treatment of their peers and may feel discouraged.
Wode Maya Exposes Barbados Immigration | CARICOM Travel
WODE MAYA EXPOSES BAJAN IMMIGRATION
Wode Maya exposes Barbados immigration during his visit to the island in late 2023. The Ghanaian YouTuber talked about the difficulties he and his wife faced when they arrived in Barbados for their visit hosted by the Barbados government.
Wode Maya discussed the bureaucracy and hassle he dealt with and why the immigration procedures make travel rough for tourists. Guyanese are familiar with these difficulties in Barbados because many have experienced the infamous "Guyanese bench."
Was Wode Maya right about Barbados immigration, or was he complaining about a minor inconvenience? Do you think Barbados can do better when it comes to CARICOM travel?
The Guyana Government Importing Cuban Nurses | The Good & the Bad
CUBAN NURSE PROBLEMS???
The Guyana Government is Importing Cuban nurses to remedy a local nursing crisis. Here's the good & the bad about this short-term solution.
Guyana faces a nursing shortage as a result of a brain drain and a high emigration rate of skilled and qualified nurses. Importing nurses from Cuba and other parts of the world has been the most common short-term solution to this issue. Cuban nurses are competent and qualified. However, they have many difficulties communicating with Guyanese patients who speak Guyanese Creole. Do you think the Cuban nurses are an asset or a liability? Is importing nurses a viable solution to the nursing shortage?
Guyana Rejects Haitian Migrants & Accepts Venezuelan Migrants
GUYANA REJECTS HAITIAN MIGRANTS & ACCEPTS VENEZUELAN MIGRANTS
...amidst border controversy with Venezuela and rising immigration. Haitian migrants to Guyana were rejected and placed under great scrutiny because of suspected involvement in a human trafficking ring. Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs Anil Nandlall rightfully raised the alarm when immigration data showed that thousands of Haitians were overstaying or illegally departing the country. At the same time, visa requirements were implemented for Haitians and Cubans coming to Guyana. Meanwhile, Venezuelans have been legally and illegally migrating to Guyana without the same narrative being presented about them. Some citizens have noted a dramatic increase in the number of Venezuelan women doing sex work across Guyana. Could they also be victims of human trafficking?
Guyanese Nurses are Leaving | Guyana Healthcare Crisis
GUYANESE NURSES ARE FED UP!
Guyanese nurses are leaving Guyana in record numbers, putting the country on the verge of a healthcare crisis. 146 nurses left their jobs at the Georgetown Public Hospital in 2023. The number of nurses leaving is expected to increase in 2024. Guyanese nurses typically migrate to the UK, Canada and the Caribbean in search of better wages and working conditions. This brain drain leaves Guyana's health sector with a growing deficit of nurses. How can Guyana prevent nurses from leaving? Can this crisis be averted?
Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton says Venezuelan Migrants being registered by the PPP/C
Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton claims that Venezuelan Migrants are being registered by the PPP/C government. Amidst the Guyana-Venezuela border controversy, politicians are debating about the fate of Venezuelans in Guyana. While the government claims that 80% of migrants are Guyanese, the Opposition claims that the government is illegally registering Venezuelans as electors. Are the Opposition's claims valid, or are they making a wild accusation?
CARICOM Hacked by Venezuelan Group | Caribbean Cyberattacks
CARICOM HACKED by Venezuelan group on December 2, 2023, as part of a recent wave of Caribbean Cyberattacks. The Venezuelan hacking group Team HDP announced that they successfully hacked the CARICOM Secretariat network, leading to a complete shutdown of the Secretariat's network and online applications. The breach was discovered when a strange post was made on CARICOM's website, allegedly by someone who should not have had access to the platform given the limited access. Hundreds of CARICOM staff and their dependents have been rendered vulnerable by the data leaked in this cyberattack.
Guyanese government Services have been attacked, too. Several ministries and sub-agencies have fallen victim to ransomware attacks this year alone. 2023 has also seen the rise of the Akira Ransomware Group, which recently listed a government-owned utility company in a Caribbean country as one of its latest victims. Do you think governments should be more transparent about the cyber threats they face, especially when those threats could potentially compromise the data and privacy of their citizens?
