Second time around was the charm for President's College U14 girls team as they defeated familiar foes and defending champions Waramuri Primary Top 2-1 to clinch their maiden title.

The effervescent Kimora Edwards was the driving force behind PC's success throughout the tournament and she stood up yet again with a brace to avenge last year's defeat against the same opponents.

NATIONAL JUNIOR BADMINTON SERVES OFF ๐Ÿธ

The Guyana Badminton Association on Tuesday evening ran off its National Junior Singles Tournament sponsored by the National Sports Commission.

In her opening remarks, the Vice-President of the Guyana Badminton Association welcomed all the athletes and officials to the tournament. She highlighted that this event is a significant part of the Badminton Academy and will be a staple in the Guyana Badminton Association's annual calendar. Additionally, she noted that the tournament commemorates World Badminton Day, celebrated globally by the badminton community on July 5 each year.

The Academy was launched on January 4, 2022, as a visionary project by our Honorable Minister Ramson. Minister Ramson's vision for the Academy included three stages: a Nursery, followed by tournaments, and culminating in elite status. We at the GBA are proud to note that we have successfully reached the second stage and are rapidly approaching the third.

The Academy began at the Queens College Auditorium under the guidance of National Player Narayan Ramdhani, who created the Academy handbook, which was presented to the Hon. Minister, along with Ex-National Player Jonathan Mangra. Currently, the Academy is being coached by National Players Priyanna Ramdhani, Akili Haynes, and Nkosi Beaton. The training sessions are conducted at Queens College, Bishops' High, North Ruimveldt Multilateral, and North Georgetown Secondary School. Additionally, there is a session at Marian Academy.

In addition to the schools mentioned above, we have practice sessions in Berbice, overseen by Mr. Colin Bowry and a few PE teachers. We are also delighted to announce that Linden has resumed practice sessions, and two of their athletes are participating in this tournament.

The tournament will feature five categories (10 events) for Boys and Girls Under 11 through Under 19 Singles. Trophies will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd, and semi-finalists in each category.

The Tournament was declared opened by Mr. Franklin Wilson, Assistant Director of Sports who made some brief remarks highlighting the good work done by the Executive Committee of the Badminton Association and commending them for organizing and executing one of the best run academies of the 12 core sports.

Play started on Tuesday and will conclude with the quarter-final, semi-finals and finals being played on Wednesday, June 25, 2024 and Thursday, June 27, 2024, we anticipate exciting and competitive play.

MOTIE IS ICC PLAYER OF THE MONTH ๐Ÿšจ

West Indiesโ€™ tweaker Gudakesh Motie becomes just the second player from his side to secure an ICC Menโ€™s Player of the Month award.
2024 is turning out to be a fairly rewarding year for West Indies players.

In January, young star Shamar Joseph won the ICC Menโ€™s Player of the Month award for his sensational performance that led to the unforgettable victory over Australia at the Gabba. Now, teammate Motie has secured the Player of the Month award for May 2024.

He beat competition from Pakistanโ€™s Shaheen Afridi and Irelandโ€™s Lorcan Tucker to win the award.

The West Indiesโ€™ left-arm spinner, who has continued to shine during the ongoing ICC Menโ€™s T20 World Cup 2024, had a host of brilliant outings during May

He enjoyed plenty of success in the three-match home series against South Africa in May. The left-arm tweaker picked eight wickets across three matches at a parsimonious average of 8.50.

On the back of his performance, the hosts sealed a statement 3-0 victory in Jamaica.

Motie picked up 3/25 in the opening contest to restrict the touristsโ€™ chase and he backed that performance up with another impressive spell of three for 22 to stifle the middle-order in the second fixture as well.

Another two wickets in the final match turned the tide in favour of the hosts once more and allowed the 29-year-old to claim the Player of the Series accolade.

In the ongoing Menโ€™s T20 World Cup, Motie has shown fine form and picked five wickets at an average of 11.

Motie was excited to accept the award and is hoping he can continue his excellent recent form and help the West Indies succeed at the T20 World Cup.

โ€œIt means a lot to me and I am very happy to win this award. Itโ€™s very encouraging, I have put in a lot of work during this season and I am happy that I am seeing the rewards now," Motie said.

โ€œThe standout performance for me during the series against South Africa was the first game, where I took three for 25. The third wicket that night was my favourite.

โ€œPlaying in a World Cup means a lot to me, and playing at home in front of our fans and knowing the conditions is also special. We have started strongly, playing three games and getting three wins, and I see us going all the way and lifting that cup on 29 June.โ€

Kares One Guyana T10 Tapeball Blast returns on August 3

- finals set for August 25 at the National Stadium

The Kares One Guyana T10 Tapeball Blast, a fast-paced cricket tournament, is gearing up for its second season, bowling off on August 3 with the other playing dates being August 4, 11 and 25.

This follows a highly successful inaugural edition in 2023, and Kares Engineering has secured the title sponsorship once more.

The tournament will feature 32 of Guyana's top Tapeball teams, battling for a shot at the G$1.5 million first-place prize and national bragging rights.

The runners-up will pocket $500,000, and the two losing semi-finalists will get $250,000 each.

The stakes are raised this year, with the much-anticipated semi-finals, finals, and Cricket for Charity match scheduled for August 25 at the National Stadium.

This exhibition match will likely feature President Dr. Irfaan Ali again along with prominent figures in Government and private sector.

John Ramsingh, Co-Director of FL Sport, the tournament organizer, expressed excitement for a competitive season.

"The 2023 edition exceeded expectations with overwhelming support from players, fans, and the National Stadium crowd," he said in a press release. "We aim to surpass those numbers and deliver another exceptional tournament."

While expansion was considered, organizers have opted to maintain the 32-team format with a straight knockout structure for 2024.

However, plans are underway to introduce qualifying zones with increased corporate backing, potentially opening the door for wider participation in future editions.

The tournament has already garnered international interest, with teams from Pakistan, Dominica, Barbados, and Trinidad and Tobago expressing a desire to compete. Some of these teams might join the fray as early as 2025.

Building on the success of last year's live streaming, matches from the quarter-finals onwards will once again be available on various platforms, including Facebook, YouTube, the FL Sport website, and cable television through a partnership with ENet.

This allows fans to enjoy the action from anywhere while providing valuable exposure for sponsors.

The 2023 edition attracted thousands of online viewers, particularly for the Cricket for Charity match streamed on President Ali's page.

The President's initiative successfully raised over G$20 million for Guyanese charities, and organizers hope to exceed this amount with continued corporate support.

Teams interested in participating can find registration details in the coming days on the One Guyana T10 Blast page. The registration fee is G$25,000.

Beyond the top cash prize, individual accolades will be awarded for Player of the Final, Most Wickets, Most Runs, and Most Valuable Player.

Last year, Eccles All-Stars emerged victorious, defeating V-Net Vipers in the final. Team Corruption and Tarmac were the losing semi-finalists.

The Kares One Guyana T10 Tapeball Blast promises another exciting season of cricket, showcasing Guyana's talent while fostering a spirit of community through the Charity match.

Grimmond named Guyana Women's U19 Captain ahead of CWI Regional tournament.

Realeanna Grimmond was recently named Captain of the Guyanaโ€™s Women U19 Team, ahead of the CWI Rising Stars Womenโ€™s under 19 Regional Championships.

Grimmond, a West Indies under-19 player, will take over from former U-19 skipper Ashmini Munisar. Along with deputy spinner Niya Latchman, the pair will lead an imposing unit that performed at a high level during the last edition of the regional tournament.

The Guyanese who finished 2nd overall last year, missed out on the title after being edged out by eventual winners Jamaica, despite being tied on 16 points.

This year, experienced players like Trisha Hardat, Naomi Barkoye, Tiea Isaacs, Crystal Durant and others will have an opportunity to showcase their talents, adding to their exploits last year.

Meanwhile, the ladies will wing out for Trinidad and Tobago on June 30, with the Women's tournament running from July 2-14.

Guyana Women's U19 Team - Realeanna Grimmond (Captain), Naomi Barkoye, Niya Latchman (Vice-captain), Tilleya Madramootoo, Trisha Hardat, Laurene Williams, Denelle Lindee, Crystal Durant, Brianna Samaroo, Shonette Belgrave, Tiea Isaacs, Danellie Manns, Tremaine Marks, Latoya Williams.

Guyana womenโ€™s hockey team to attend PAHF Challenge in Bermuda

The Guyana womenโ€™s hockey team is scheduled to compete in the 2024 PAHF Challenge set for Hamilton, Bermuda from 20th to 28th September, 2024. The Challenge is a qualifier for the PAHF Cup scheduled for Uruguay in 2025 and is Guyanaโ€™s only path to qualifying for a World Cup. Six teams will be vying for the single available spot in the PAHF Cup which are hosts Bermuda, Brazil, Guyana, Jamaica, Peru and Mexico. Of the six teams, Mexico is the highest ranked team listed as #37 in the world, followed by Peru as #41, Brazil at #54, Jamaica at #67, Bermuda at #68 and Guyana at #70.

A squad of 25 players has been selected to commence training for the Challenge. The squad sees several new faces, mostly emerging from the countryโ€™s 2023 Under-21 team that competed in the Junior Pan American Championships that year. Among the seasoned players of the squad are the Xavier sisters, Gabriella and Alysa, full back Trisha Woodroffe and right winger Chantelle Fernandes. Fourteen year old phenomenon Makaylah Poole is the youngest of the squad which features thirteen under-21 players including overseas based Sarah Klautky, Charlia Webb and Madison Fernandes. The squad will be guided once again by national coach Philip Fernandes.

Guyana last competed in the PAHF Challenge back in 2011 where they finished runners-up to Uruguay in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Only four players remain in contention for selection from the previous squad.

The sport continues to struggle with the lack of an artificial surface and recently was crippled by the closure of the major cricket grounds in preparation for the world cup. Fernandes indicated that creative measures have to be taken in order to prepare a squad for such an event without a full-sized pitch as this remains the biggest challenge to improved international performances.

The full Guyana squad reads:

Goalkeepers โ€“ Alysa Xavier, Empress Charles, Jessica Mittelholzer, Keziah Johnason, Sarah Harry

Defenders โ€“ Julia Gouveia, Kezia Chinian, Kirsten Gomes, Kazaquah Uzzi, Makeda Harding, Tekeisha Deleon, Trisha Woodroffe

Midfielders - Charlia Webb, Clayza Bobb, Gabriella Xavier, Kenisha Wills, Madison Fernandes, Sarah Klautky, Temmara Clarke

Strikers - Abosaide Cadogan, Carolyn Deane, Chantelle Fernandes, Makaylah Poole, Princessa Wilkie, Samantha Fernandes
