GAZEΛ, the band∙ a quartet of musically diverse individuals immersing in their common expressive language to craft a new sound rooting in old-school grooves, while pending in between jazz and cinematic aesthetics.
The musicians met in different place and time and played all together for the first time for the 7 days that the recordings lasted, during the pandemic.

- «In Between» un ovni du groupe GAZEΛ venu de Thessaloniki, au Nord de la Grèce dont quelques titres furent inspirés par la capitale française avec son leader Linos Tzelos à la basse 5 cordes et Sokrates Votskos - déjà connu de nos services- au saxophone. Vous cherchez un son original ? Ecoutez cette étrange gazelle ;
- « Way Station » par le guitariste Suédois Hans Olding qui propose son premier album dans le format du trio avec Mauritz Agnas à la basse et Karl-Henrik Ousbäck à la batterie. Des mélodies fort bien ciselées et un forte connivence entre les trois intervenants. A déguster à toute heure de la journée ou du soir ;
- «Togetherness Ensemble» le premier album du Saxophoniste Pierrick Menuau en leader. Avec une formidable équipe qui forme un 5tet soudé. (Julien Touéry, piano, Yoann Loustalot, trompette, Sebastien Boisseau, contrebasse et Christophe Lavergne à la batterie. Un album très inspiré …par le disque de Don Cherry sorti en 1965, « Togetherness » Formidable ! ;

- « Alternate Streams » L’album du guitariste Jérôme Lefebvre en trio avec Lincontang à la contrebasse et Sangoma Everett à la batterie. Un jazz libre esthétique ,plein de belles énergies et magnifiquement servi par les 3 interprètes ;
- « K Bye » le nouvel album du guitariste californien Daniel DeLorenzo. 8 compositions originales et une reprise de « nardis » de Miles avec Gastón Reggio (drums), Robbie Link (bass), and Ben Lassiter guitare rythmique. Choix d’un joli blues pour cette émission.
- « Naked Truth » La vérité nue, ou crue, déclinée en 9 compositions du trompettiste Avishai Cohen Music avec ses acolytes Yonathan Avishai au piano, Barak Mori à la contrebasse et Ziv Ravitz à la batterie. Dans la plus radicale vérité musicale selon le label ECM.

During this pandemic, the band and not only managed to pull through this work, getting together in Kozani, my hometown. The conditions were harsh but with a pinch of good organization and a bunch of passion about music making we pulled this through and it feels only fair to state an enormous appreciation to all involved for being true artists above profession or anything else.

David Soin Tappeser, with whom I met in India during music travels, came all the way from the UK for this, offering his unique dynamic drum playing along with top notch arrangement skills.
George Papatheodorou, a good friend from Kozani, owning exceptional sense of aesthetics, painted harmonically the music with his vibrant guitar sound. Sokrates Votskos, the bird of Almopia- we share a past and in music- brassed out all the notes that can never be formed in words.

The sound engineering craftsmen of the local region of Kozani, Dimitris Gloubos ans Stelios Zampakas, who turned this into a fairy tale, providing the space, the time and the equipment that far exceeded my expectations.

The video creator, Thanasis Protatos, who improvised like a proper jazzer on the camera and pulled through an impeccable one-shot video of one of the band's tracks.

Of course, last but not least, the infamous George Chronakis, who filtered the sound into picture and introduced GAZEΛ's image to the world.

ORIGINS :

The gazelle is a swift animal that shows its greatest beauty and grace when under pressure or danger. A gazelle doesn’t outrun its predators but outmaneuvers them, using a bounding leap called “stotting”. A gazelle can easily change habitat and does so depending on the creative possibilities the new environment offers. The word “gazelle” roots back to the word “ghazaal” or “ghazal”, both referring to a form of Arabic poetry which focuses on emotional expression.

The artist is a swift creature in the modern society. Shows his grace/ power under the harshest of conditions but cannot be categorized or compared to any form of human act. The artist too, can and will change habitat in order to seek for inspiration or productive sources. The artist gets inspired by anything that offers emotion and creates to express his own emotion taking in account the happenings of his surroundings.

Days like years is an original score from GAZEΛ’s first album that describes every second of those days that we all just want to end, either because we hurt or we cannot abide with. But∙ to reach the end means managing to live through every breathing second to that end.
