OVER 80 VISITS... AND STILL COMING BACK!

A few days ago, we asked our followers how many times they’ve visited The Gambia, and the responses blew us away!

Some have been here 20, 30, 50, and even more than 80 times! Wow! This is truly amazing!

So, what makes people return over 80 times?
It’s not just the warm weather (though that’s a big plus!). It’s the warm hearts that make this place unforgettable.

Imagine being greeted with genuine smiles, catching up with friends who feel like family, and knowing there’s always a place that feels like home waiting for you.

Maybe it’s the golden sunsets, but we believe it’s the incredible people who make every visit feel like a reunion.

Curious to experience the magic for yourself?

Come and see why so many can’t stay away!

MADE IN THE GAMBIA: WOVEN FABRICS

Weaving played a very important role in the history of The Gambia, but lately, the tradition of weaving is slowly disappearing.

Due to competitive pricing from regions like Asia and Europe, The Gambia's cotton industry lost its foothold, leading to a rise in factory-made, imported materials.

Today, hand-woven fabric is rare and highly valued, treasured for its authenticity and craftsmanship.

Because we value this tradition, we are committed to reviving the cotton industry and bringing back its vibrancy. Our goal is to offer exquisite, hand-crafted cotton products to the market, promoting the unique artistry of The Gambia.

Meet Ousman Sambou, a dedicated young weaver who is keeping this tradition alive. Ousman began weaving in 2002 and has mastered the craft, making most of his products from cotton.

Taught by his uncle, Ousman has been working independently since 2018, earning his livelihood through weaving. He handles every aspect of the process, from setting up the loom and arranging the threads to weaving intricate designs.

EMPOWERING RESPONSIBLE TOURISM: WELCOMING DR. ADAMA BAH TO INTERNATIONAL CENTRE FOR RESPONSIBLE TOURISM GLOBAL'S LEADERSHIP

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Adama Bah has been appointed as a member of the Board of a new initiative, the International Centre for Responsible Tourism Global (ICRT - Global).

For years, Dr. Bah has been an associate member of the International Centre for Responsible Tourism (ICRT) and also founded the International Centre for Responsible Tourism - West Africa within the Institute of Travel and Tourism of The Gambia (ITTOG).

Through the ICRT, many Gambians and Africans have received scholarships to study Responsible Tourism Management, mainly at UK universities.

Over 10 Gambians and dozens of Africans have earned their postgraduate Master's degrees through this program, funded by the Commonwealth Foundation. Currently, four Gambians (two from GTB and two from the private sector) are enrolled in this program.

The ICRT-Global (https://icrt.global/) will offer online short courses and other services in responsible tourism starting in early 2025. The first courses to be launched include a Professional Certificate in Responsible Tourism and a course on addressing Over Tourism. To sustain the initiative, a reasonable fee will be charged.

The ICRT-Global is established with the intention of amplifying global knowledge and understanding of Responsible Tourism.

The founder, Emeritus Professor Harold Goodwin, has been a friend of Dr. Bah since they met at the 7th Commission for Sustainable Development at the UN in New York in 1999. Together, they have implemented projects both in The Gambia and around the world. Dr. Bah is honoured to have been selected to serve in this new initiative, which Professor Goodwin describes as follows:

"In 1675, Sir Isaac Newton wrote, 'If I see further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.' The giants of Responsible Tourism are those people who are practicing it, in every corner of the world."

We want to share that collective knowledge to help us all see further."

VISITING KEREWAN SAMBA SIRA VILLAGE FOR THE COTTON PROJECT

The Gambia’s cotton industry once flourished, bringing prosperity to thousands during the 1970s and 1980s.

Now, we're collaborating with alkalo, Mohammed Saidy, his brother, Yerro Saidy and the villagers of Kerewan Samba Sira as they work to revive this important tradition.

This initiative focuses on community-based tourism, volunteer experiences, and agro-tourism, while creating unique Gambian cotton products that celebrate the rich cultural heritage of The Gambia. It aims to complement the diverse attractions already present in rural areas, offering visitors a deeper connection to local culture.

Guests can already engage in various activities, from volunteering and workshops to school visits, cooking with local women, exploring rice fields, and visiting the stone circle. We’re also delighted to support a sponsor-a-child program and contribute to the village's football academy.

As part of our efforts to preserve and celebrate heritage, we will establish two museums dedicated to Fula and Mandinka cultures, showcasing the vibrant traditions of these communities.

The cotton project promises to enrich your journey, providing new insights into our culture while contributing to community development.

On October 26th, we will head to the village to provide updates on ongoing and upcoming activities.

Visiting villages like Kerewan Samba Sira offers a meaningful and authentic experience, especially for those seeking a deeper connection with local culture.

We invite you to be part of this journey to discover the beauty and traditions of rural Gambia.
