Report from the Secretary General (SG) of Seno Bajonki VDC

Today, at approximately 11:00 a.m., while we were engaged in a community cleansing exercise at our community farm, we received an urgent report from one of our Forest Committee members about a fire outbreak. Upon arrival at the scene, we discovered that parts of the farm belonging to our brother, Kebba Sey, had been burnt.

Unfortunately, the fire also affected a significant portion of the forest area between Seno Bajonki, Sare Biran, Sumbundu, and Missera. While not entirely destroyed, the damage will still have a notable impact on our livestock, particularly cattle, which rely heavily on this forest for grazing.

This unfortunate incident underscores the urgent need for greater vigilance and stronger collaborative efforts to safeguard our environment and livelihoods.

The initiative brought together members of the Village Development Committee (VDC), the Mothers’ Club, and the Forest Committee, with valuable support from ADWAC (Agency for the Development of Women and Children).

A key focus of the exercise was the community forest, which includes transplanted trees supported by the Regional Forest Department and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). This effort highlights the importance of preserving and maintaining these vital resources for environmental conservation and community development.

This collaborative effort underscores the community’s commitment to maintaining a clean and healthy environment, fostering unity, and ensuring a better quality of life for all residents.

Today, we had the extraordinary honor of visiting Tangkong, where we met an awe-inspiring soul—Ba Alpha Mamadi, the revered head of the village. At over 100 years old, his strength and vitality left us utterly amazed. To witness a man of his age walking to the mosque on his own, strolling through the village with a grace that defies time, was nothing short of miraculous.

Ba Alpha Mamadi is not just a symbol of resilience; he is a living testament to the blessings of Kabada and the power of a life well-lived. His unwavering spirit, dignity, and connection to his faith moved us deeply. In his presence, we were reminded of the beauty of simplicity, the strength of community, and the blessings of health and longevity.

Ya Allah, we pray that You continue to protect this noble elder. Grant him good health and extend his days with ease and barakah. And for us, may we be blessed with a life as honorable and enduring as his, rooted in faith, gratitude, and purpose. Kabada truly is blessed to have such a remarkable soul among its people.

Yesterday, Kabada TV had the privilege of visiting Hawakah Sallah in Wellingara, an inspiring figure and a true champion for rural empowerment in The Gambia. Awa, the visionary founder of Jamweli Foods and president of Dongoro Ba Women Association, has transformed her firsthand experience of the challenges of malnutrition into a groundbreaking initiative addressing food security and women’s economic empowerment.

Jamweli Foods, a woman-owned and managed agro-processing social enterprise, is revolutionizing rural livelihoods by turning locally grown crops into affordable, nutritious, and accessible food products. By sourcing raw materials directly from rural women farmers, the enterprise not only enhances sustainable incomes but also strengthens the resilience of entire communities.

Their innovative products, such as Chura Gerteh (a nutritious rice and groundnut porridge), Arraw-Niambi (a cassava and millet blend), baby cereals enriched with cowpea and millet, and a micronutrient mix of moringa, baobab, and sesame, are tailored to support healthy diets across all age groups. These ready-to-cook and pre-cooked offerings simplify meal preparation while ensuring essential nutrients for children, adults, and the elderly.

Kabada TV celebrates the outstanding impact of Jamweli Foods and Hawakah Sallah’s unwavering commitment to empowering women and addressing malnutrition through sustainable, community-driven solutions.

Nioro Jattaba on Monday 16th December 2024 inaugurated a solar-powered borehole in its new settlement area, where hundreds of residents previously faced the challenge of drawing water from old, abandoned wells or travelling hundreds of metres to join the queues at the only borehole in the village, built during the First Republic.

The new borehole project, donated by Dream Baby Foundation through Senegal-born philanthropist Khadija Sokhna Neumann, provides much-needed relief to the fast-growing community.

The borehole, according to Ebrima Marong, Coordinator of Working Water – The Gambia, who served as the implementing partner, is built with an overhead tank with a capacity of 3,000 litres. Drilled to a depth of 24 metres, he said the borehole has the capacity to pump up to 60,000 litres of water daily.

On the merits of her support, Khadija said she owes it to her late father because he was an amazing man who built the first blind hospital in Senegal, as well as a hospital for the handicapped. “He was an advocate for a lot of things, so I just followed in his footsteps. That’s life. But I’m proud and I’m happy. And I think that every day.”

Speaking on behalf of the Alkalo of Nioro Jattaba, Jabel Bah hailed the gesture as valuable and timely. He said it comes at a time when the village is concerned about the urgent need to extend social amenities such as water and electricity to residents living far from the village centre. While the project addresses the needs of a very important part of the village, he pointed out that there are still many other locations that continue to face the daily struggle for clean, drinkable water. He urged the government and NGOs to take note for possible intervention.

Men, women, the elderly, and the young who gathered to witness the gesture expressed their gratitude to Dream Baby Foundation, its CEO Khadija Sokhna Neumann, and her team, who are in Africa to show generosity to communities in need.
