President Traoré of Burkina Faso Receives New AES Biometric Passport!

In a move that shocked Ecowas, President Ibrahim Traoré of Burkina Faso completed his biometric enrollment and received a new passport from the Confederation of Sahel States (AES). The passport, effective on January 29, marks a significant milestone in Sahel integration efforts.

The President's participation in the biometric enrollment process signals the commencement of AES passport issuance within Burkina Faso.

This passport serves as a unified travel document for the three member states of the Confederation.

While existing passports featuring the ECOWAS logo will remain valid until their respective expiration dates, citizens of the AES region are encouraged to transition to the new AES passport.

This change comes after the three Sahel states officially withdrew from ECOWAS, underscoring a shift towards closer regional ties within the AES framework.

The Gambia Police Force reportedly intercepted an alleged Central Bank employee carrying $57,800 and D370,000 at a Jenoi checkpoint.

Gambian human rights activist and political commentator, Coach Pasamba Jow, who claims to have "credible information" on the matter, alleges attempts by a minister to suppress the case.

"There are alleged attempts by a minister to kill the case. I have the name of the arrested person, who is believed to be part of a group of three, and photographs and video of the money being counted and handed over to the fraud unit.

"We expect the police to be allowed to do their job without interference or hindrance. We are watching closely," Jow posted on his Facebook wall.

However, a source told The Fatu Network that the money belongs to a marabout and that the arrested individual, who works at the Central Bank, is the marabout's son.

The source added that the money was meant for a 'Gamo' and that it was collected from the marabout's talibés (students).

The Fatu Network reached out to the police, but they were unable to confirm or deny the news at the time of publication.

Saidou Bayo and Musa Kanteh, who bailed former National People’s Party (NPP) supporter Mbemba Drammeh, have been arrested by the Gambia Police after Mbemba allegedly fled to France.

Mbemba Drammeh had been detained after making several allegations against the ruling NPP during an interview with Kerr Fatou last month.

Explaining the situation, Saidou Bayo said: “His grandfather (Yahya Drammeh) is my good friend. I went with him and Musa Kanteh to bail Mbemba. They asked for an ID card to process the bail, but Yahya’s ID was expired, so he asked me to use mine. Mbemba was reporting daily at the Kairaba Police Station for 14 days as part of his bail conditions. On the 15th day, he was transferred to the Kanifing Police Station.

“We accompanied him there last Thursday. Mbemba requested two days to travel to Basse, but the police told him to return on Friday. He didn’t show up. When the police asked us about his whereabouts, we didn’t know. They told us to come back on Monday. On Monday, we were taken to Banjul, and while there, Mbemba called me, saying he was in France.”

Mathias Pogba, the brother of French footballer Paul Pogba, was sentenced by the Paris Criminal Court to three years in prison, with two suspended, and fined €20,000 for his role in the attempted extortion of €13 million and for pressuring his brother and family in 2022.

According to Agence France-Presse (AFP), he will serve the remaining year under electronic monitoring. The case, which began with an ambush targeting Paul Pogba in March 2022, gained public attention after Mathias accused his brother on social media of hiring a marabout (witch doctor) to cast a spell on fellow footballer Kylian Mbappé.

Although Paul Pogba denied the claims, the allegations added to the case's sensationalism. Five other defendants received prison sentences of up to eight years and fines ranging from €20,000 to €40,000 for their roles in the extortion and kidnapping. Several defense lawyers have announced plans to appeal the verdicts.

A woman residing in Jalanbang village, West Coast Region, is facing accusations of killing her co-wife and disposing of the body in a well following an ongoing dispute between the two.

Reports indicate that the deceased, identified as the first wife, had long-standing conflicts with the second wife. According to eyewitnesses, a child present at the scene witnessed the incident. During an argument, the second wife allegedly bit the first wife and then threw her into a well, leading to her death.

Local journalist Ousman Camara, the first to arrive at the scene, shared with King FM that a nearby fire prompted individuals to rush to the compound, where they inquired about the first wife’s whereabouts. The second wife denied knowing her co-wife’s location. However, the child revealed that the first wife was in the well. Upon further questioning, the second wife reportedly dismissed the matter, stating it was not her concern if the body was in the well.
“The second wife is responsible for the death of the first wife. They had ongoing conflicts and frequently quarreled. A child at home witnessed the entire incident. During one of their arguments, the second wife bites the first wife and threw her into the well, resulting in her death. When a fire broke out nearby, people rushed to help. Some individuals who entered their compound asked the second wife about the first wife, but she claimed she hadn’t seen her. At that moment, the child, who had been at home, revealed that her mother was in the well. When confronted again, the second wife dismissively stated that it was not her concern if her co-wife was in the well,” Camara told King FM.

The Gambia Police Force later confirmed that the Nyambai Police were investigating the suspicious death of the 28-year-old woman, whose body was found in a well on Tuesday, December 17, 2024.

A married couple has been sentenced to life in prison and fined Dh500,000 each for attempting to smuggle 4.2kg of ma*****na into the UAE.

The couple, a 27-year-old Gambian woman and a 35-year-old Nigerian man, were arrested at Dubai International Airport on January 2, 2024, following a routine customs inspection.

The incident began when customs officers noticed an unusual density in the luggage of the woman. Upon closer inspection, authorities discovered 4,290.86 grams of ma*****na hidden inside several vehicle filters. The suspect was then immediately detained for questioning.

Further investigation revealed that the ma*****na was intended for the Nigerian man, who was arrested in Dubai's Naif area while trying to collect the package from a cargo service.

During the trial, the court examined evidence including forensic reports, digital communication linking the Nigerian suspect to the shipment, and witnessed testimonies from customs officials.

Initially, the suspects denied knowledge of the drugs. However, despite their claims of ignorance about the contents of the shipment, the court dismissed their defence. The court found their argument implausible, particularly as both individuals were found to have been using co***ne, which invalidated their argument of unawareness or lack of consent.

The court also noted that the couple had knowledge of previous drug shipments in August and November of the previous year, further linking them to the crime. Additionally, digital communications were presented as evidence, which the court said confirmed their intent to smuggle drugs.

On November 28 of this year, the Dubai Criminal Court convicted both individuals on drug smuggling charges, sentencing them to life imprisonment followed by deportation.

In addition to the prison terms, they were each fined Dh500,000. If they are unable to pay the fine, they will serve one additional day in prison for every Dh100 of the total fine amount.

The confiscated drugs were also ordered to be destroyed.

Baltasar Acquitted After Scandal Involving Over 400 Leaked Videos

Baltasar Ebang Engonga, the former Director of Equatorial Guinea's National Financial Investigation Agency, has been acquitted by the Supreme Court following his imprisonment over a private scandal involving leaked explicit videos.

He was originally arrested in October for alleged embezzlement of state funds, accused of diverting large sums to secret accounts in the Cayman Islands.

Over 400 intimate videos involving Engonga and several consenting adults, including government officials and spouses of high-ranking officials, surfaced online during the investigation. The court ruled that all parties involved were consenting adults, and medical examinations confirmed no transmission of infections.

Some spouses of the individuals featured in the videos, whose infidelities were exposed, expressed gratitude to Engonga, with some even viewing the situation as a "blessing in disguise" for uncovering dishonesty and leading to divorces.

Engonga condemned the leak as a breach of his privacy and vowed legal action against those responsible, stating that it caused significant harm to his family and career.
