LIVING MEMORY OF AMILCAR CABRAL

The fearless revolutionary, thinker and theoretician Amilcar Cabral led the liberation fight that ended Portuguese colonial domination in Guinea Bissau.

He was assassinated in January 20, 1973.

Below is a quote from his powerful revolutionary thinking:

"In fact, culture is always in the life of a society (open or closed), the more or less the conscious result of the economic and political activities of that society….The experience of colonial domination shows that, in effort to perpetuate exploitation, the colonizers not only creates a system to repress cultural life of the colonized people; he also provokes and develops the cultural alienation of a part of the population, either by so called assimilation of indigenous people, or by creating a social gap between the indigenous elites and the popular masses.

History proves that it is much less difficult to dominate and continue dominating a people whose culture is similar or analogous to that of the conqueror. …[I]t happens that a considerable part of the population, notably the urban or peasant petite bourgeoisie, assimilates to the colonizers mentality, considers itself culturally superior to its own people and ignores or looks down upon their cultural values.”

Last night, my UDP friend from Jarra, currently in US, called over the phone. He reminded me of some heavy Mandinka proverbs- “Ding Ding Buwa mang sanari longg”. He said that in relation to the D500m Barrow Gov promised for CV19 fight. He said it has occupied poor people’s heads, and if they don’t eat part of it during lockdown, it will case serious issues for Barrow Gov, never mind the other D500m offered by the World Bank/UN whatever! People can’t suffer knowing there are funds meant for them.
Barrow government seems to be trading behind time. They seem to think Gambia is still in the 70s and 80s, when the Gov could say something and that would be it. There was no capacity to dig up stuff and verify it that time. We were in the dark. Not anymore.
Does Barrow Gov need figures/statistical data to say to Gambians, we will offer you free water and electricity, plus discounted or free transport for keyworkers, cut taxes etc? Do they need statistics to know how many rural communities aren’t working and live from hand-to-mouth?
When they go begging In The West, for loans and grants, they use these exact statistics to secure funds. Suddenly, when it is time for the same funds to seep down to the people they were meant for, they can’t find the figures. JOKE THING!
