IOM Supports Government Of The Gambia To Strengthens Migration Governance

The International Organization for Migration, IOM, in close partnership with the European Union (EU), has on Friday 25th March 2022 donated communication equipment to the Ministry of Information Communications and Infrastructure (MOICI), as its contribution to support the government spokesperson in combating misinformation around migration and support in providing accurate, timely information on migration including the return, readmission and reintegration to the public.
The consignment amongst other things includes, two (2) Laptops, two (2), HDMI Cables, Overhead Projector, Screen with Bluetooth Speakers and one (1), Microphone, two Wireless routers with data, External Hard Disc (1TB), One Printer, One Ink cartridges, Camera kits and accessories, Two Samsung Galaxy Tablets, One branded Podium stand, etc were donated to MOICI.
"These items are being donated to support to government spokesperson in effectively and efficiently undertaking his responsibilities as the voice of the government, and these, of course, include strengthening migration discourse," said Fumiko Nagano, IOM Chief of mission in The Gambia.
"EURCAP, through which the donation was made possible is funded by European Union (EU).
The project is part of IOM’s ongoing technical support to the Government of The Gambia (GOTG) in strengthening migration governance, build the capacity of government stakeholders, media and civil society to communicate on migration-related issues, including return management," She remarked.
She revealed that the project has since April 2021, provided numerous training to government officials, Civil Society Organisation (CSOs), and Journalists' respectively.
"Since April 2021, the project provided the following training: "Nine (9) different training programmes for government information officers on areas such as Introduction to migration, Public Relations, Return and Reintegration, Migration and Health Crisis Communication I and II, Social Media Management etc.
Induction to Migration training for civil society organizations in all the seven regions of the country. Advanced migration training for journalists Migration advocacy workshop for civil society organizations and media
And next, we are organizing International Migration Law training for government communication officers, law students at the University of The Gambia and journalists.
Last year, we donated communication equipment to the Ministry of Information Communications and Infrastructure (MOICI) worth €125,000 for information officers," she posited.
She added: "Late last year, we started potential partnership engagements with Hon Spokesperson. As a strong voice for the Government of The Gambia, it is important he adds his voice to combating misinformation around migration and support in providing accurate, credible, timely information on migration including return, readmission and reintegration to the public."
On his part, Ebrima Sillah, Minister for Information Communication and Infrastructure thanked the IOM for their continuous support to his ministry as part of their effort to strengthen communication and visibility on migration in the Gambia.
"Like you, all know the Gambia is one of the tops Sub-Saharan countries with a high population of migrants to mainly Europe most of whom have taken some dangerous route popular called in this country " backway" to reach Europe. A number of them are there without papers is still a contentious issue, therefore, using the media to enhance the visibility around this issue paramount," he concluded.
