In order to make sense of the present
And, shape a more humane future

'Informed citizens build a better democracy. If people can examine and explore their history authoritatively, and the origins of their culture authentically. Then maybe they will be inspired to learn more, and think more critically about what they see and read on the internet and television'. 'Truth being the oxygen of hope'.

'No other person changed the face of the earth as radically & no other human event can compare'. There is much to celebrate, examine, challenge & question. As we collectively seek to build a better democracy, built on justice, equity and solidarity - We must seek out the true root causes of systemic inequality in our economic and political systems, and bring an end to a divisive culture of blame'.

'We live in a fabricated reality where the visible world became nearly meaningless once the screen world became people’s 'window on the world. People still move about in the physical world but live in the electronic one. The result is mass hallucination'.

The arrival in the late 20th century of instantaneous, networked, global communication may well have facilitated the targeted propaganda, recruitment, and two-way communication of transnational terrorist organizations more than it has helped combat them.

We are now discovering—painfully and much too slowly—that deep conflict between cultures is in many ways being fired up rather than cooled down by this revolution in communications, as was the case in the 16th and 19th centuries.

Whenever new technology suddenly brings different peoples closer together and makes them aware of certain commonalities, it seems simultaneously to create a compensatory psychological need for the different peoples to define—and even assert aggressively—what is unique and distinctive about their own historic cultures'.

It's Time to Give Americans: A Proper History Lesson.

Educating America
I thought it would be a good idea to educate Americans about history. We don't really educate Americans as much about history as we should, we don't teach history as much as we used to, and we don't teach civics as much as we used to.

Educating Congress
So we are rightly concerned about stem subjects, but we shouldn't
ignore history and civics. So I think that's important for all citizens but I have also thought it was important for members of Congress as well because they're making the laws.

So I thought about six years ago, it would be a good idea to get members of Congress to know a little bit more about history than they already know, and they do know a fair bit.

Convening our Lawmakers
So once a month I have a dinner at the library Congress for members of Congress to educate themselves a little bit about history by interviewing a great author.

Why Cultural Philanthropy Matters: Impact….!

‘Serendipity made me realize how important culture was, and what kind of impact you can have with a relatively small amount of dollars’.

Where Americans can see them.
‘And that was when I saw a chance to buy the Magna Carta. I bought it and put it on permanent display at the National Archives. The Emancipation Proclamation, The constitutional declaration dependents.

Informed Citizens Build a Better Democracy.
‘The theory that if they could see them, they'd be inspired to go back and learn more about the history of these documents, and maybe become more informed, and that more informed citizens might create a better democracy'.

What came before us and the Culture we have now.
'If you have a chance to remind people of the history and heritage of their country, the culture of that came before them, and the culture we have now. We might be able to produce citizens who are more informed and build a better democracy'.

They learn from the good and the bad.
I had the slave quarters built out, so that people can see that these great men (Thomas Jefferson) also had their flaws, they were slave owners. Americans must be reminded of our history'.

Impact Investing.
'But the impact is significant. This is what I mean by impact. For the dollars that I put into cultural preservation and reminding people about our culture. I have much greater impact than if I were doing the same kind of things with the same dollars in other areas'.

Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness
'Thomas Jefferson wrote a line that became the most famous sentence in the English language. I think we hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights. And how can he mean that when he was there with two slaves'.

Inspired to Learn
‘You don't see sad people leaving these kind of Institutions (Smithsonian) you see, happy people inspired to learn something more about what they have seen and therefore they become inspired’.

Future Generations
What we have is the ability now to leave behind for future generations, things that will inspire them. These Institutions help perpetuate the great culture that we've been fortunate as humans to create'.

'The power of giving is not about what money can do for one organization, the power is how we use our resources so that we can spark lasting systemic change in society, in our own era and our own time of rising inequality'.

From Generosity to Justice – A New Gospel for Wealth

Inequality, the great threat
'What we did through the process of determining inequality as a great threat, was to really excavate our mission going back to Henry Ford's imperative of improving and strengthening democracy as one of the reasons why he created the Ford Foundation'.

'So we believe that the greatest threat to democracy is hopelessness, because hopelessness as a function of growing inequality, plays a deep role in how optimistic we are. How much we believe that the American dream is still possible'.

Hope is the oxygen of the American Dream.
When hope is asphyxiated the American Dream is asphyxiated.

Andrew Carnegie - A Gospel of Wealth
He was a rapacious capitalist, but he also knew that there was something that he could do to make a difference in the lives of people who weren't as advantaged. He believed that literacy was an important intervention in the lives of people and was the root cause of the poverty’.

A more Inclusive Democratic Society
Fast forward to 2020. It's not enough to be generous and charitable, we know too much today. We are a more inclusive democratic society. We have made social advances that Carnegie could never have imagined. The progress of women, people of colour, LGBT today.

Justice in a Digital Era.
‘The imperative is not charity and generosity. The imperative is justice and dignity. And the question for philanthropists of this digital era, I believe is what are you doing to contribute to a more just and equitable society'.

Comfort in Giving
‘They feel they've been philanthropic and so it's made up with some of the things they do?' - 'So when you put the money in the bucket the Salvation Army in front of Bloomingdale's during the holidays, you feel good about yourself giving'.

A New Gospel
'Through this new gospel doesn't always make you feel good because rather than giving money for a homeless shelter. We have to ask ourselves why is there homelessness in the richest nation in the world, in a city like New York, which has a housing crisis?'.

Getting Uncomfortable
'So how is it that we live in a society where wealthy developers and wealthy purchasers are benefiting from an abatement in their taxes on their real estate holdings. When homeless people are literally on the streets in front of them?’

Who we are as a Nation
'We have to ask ourselves what kind of nation do we live in that allows that....? And how have I contributed to this outcome....?'. And so for the donor it does require holding up the mirror. And that's a very hard thing because most Americans believe in the idea of meritocracy.

‘We have so many people who are successful, who did start from very humble beginnings, and therefore: It's hard for those people to believe...that there is something inherently unjust about America'.

'They believe that America actually works...?
And, for them. America has worked.
But, unfortunately for far too many American's.
It is not working anymore. And that's what we've got to change'.
