Ghana’s active COVID-19 cases 5,397, death toll 831

Some 5,397 active COVID-19 cases are currently being battled by Ghana’s authorities.

The death toll has also shot up to 831. Also, 394 fresh cases have been confirmed. Since mid-March 2020, a total of 103,789 people have had the virus in Ghana.

Out of that number, 97,561 have recovered.

President Nana Akufo-Addo recently said the upsurge in COVID-19 cases clearly shows that Ghana is experiencing a third wave, which he put down to the relaxing of adherence to the safety protocols.

“As per data available from the Ghana Health Service, it appears that, unfortunately, our nation is experiencing a third wave of COVID-19 infections”, the president said in his 26th national address on COVID-19 on Sunday, 25 July 2021.

The president announced a ban on all post-funeral receptions and said one-week funeral anniversaries should be “restricted solely to family members, and should not exceed a duration of two hours”.

He also directed that all funerals should not go beyond two hours.

GH¢100 National Cathedral fundraiser not govt initiative – Secretariat clarifies

• National Cathedral Secretariat says the monthly donation is not a govt initiative

• According to the CEO, it is to promote collective ownership

• Dubbed ‘Ketoa Biaa Nsua’, Ken Ofori-Atta appealed to Ghanaians to donate GH¢100 towards the construction of the Cathedral

The National Cathedral Secretariat says the monthly GH¢100.00 appeal for funds which was announced by the finance minister when presenting the Mid-Year Budget Review on Thursday, July 29, 2021, is not a government initiative.

Appealing to Ghanaians, Ken Ofori-Atta indicated that, the objective of the fund-raiser is to get about a million Ghanaians contributing towards the construction.

This initiative, the finance minister said is dubbed ‘Ketoa Biaa Nsua’ which translates into "no amount is too small".

But speaking to Citi FM, Dr. Paul Opoku-Mensah, CEO of the Secretariat explained, the initiative is to promote the collective ownership of the cathedral.

“So far, we have exclusively focused on the major donors while the churches as institutions and some individuals say, they are happy to give as much as between GH¢5,000 and GH¢100,000. But there are those who tell us that they are happy to give but how do they contribute because they do not have that huge amount.

“So, one of those donors said the Secretariat should do something so that those with any amount can also give to the National Cathedral construction and that is when the proposal of this GHS100 club was launched to ensure that as many Ghanaians as possible are given the opportunity to write their names in the history of the Cathedral.

“So really, this is not a government initiative. It was an update of the fundraising we said was going to happen, and it is not only happening, but it has become this creative process where new initiatives are introduced”, Dr Opoku-Mensah said.

The GH¢100.00 ‘Ketoa Biaa Nsua’ initiative is said to be launched on August 12, 2021.

Already a special shortcode; *979 # has been developed for this purpose to enable people to contribute towards the construction.

Free tertiary education coming – President Akufo-Addo hints

• President Akufo-Addo has touted the success of the Free SHS policy

• He says the policy has granted more people access to education

• He said that government is considering making tertiary education free

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has dropped hints of a replication of the Free Senior High School policy at the tertiary education level.

According to the president, the prospect of making tertiary free has been mooted at top level and discussions are ongoing to achieve same.

Speaking at the Global Education Summit held in London on Thursday, July 29, President Akufo-Addo expressed confidence that making tertiary education free would grant more people access to education just like the Free SHS program.

“For now, what has been put in place is a system where students at the tertiary level are provided loans while in school to help them cater for their needs, but we’re considering free Tertiary education too,” he said.

President Akufo-Addo noted that the Free SHS policy has driven up Ghana’s budget for the education sector and that there are plans to invest more in the initiative.

He stated that Free SHS has been a success and handed education opportunities to Ghanaians who would have been left out due to lack of finance.

“It’s one of the highest on the continent, and we intend to ramp it up even more,” the President stated.

Adding that “the policy has reversed decades of exclusion, which denied, on the average, one hundred thousand young men and women, annually, entry to senior high school education because of the poverty of their parents.”

Black Stars defender Lumor Agbenyenu has lost his four-year-old son just few days after completing a move to Aris Thessaloniki FC in Greece.

The 24-year-old left back sealed the move to the Greek Super League side last Friday as GHANAsoccernet.com reported.

The cause of his son's death is unknown at the moment.

We’re initiators of ¢100 National Cathedral donation campaign, not government – Secretariat

The National Cathedral Secretariat has reiterated that the mobilisation of funds towards the construction of the National Cathedral is not a part of government’s programme.

The Secretariat says the facility is only supported by government as it spearheads its own fundraising activities under the leadership of the Board of Trustees.

This comes on the back of criticism that greeted the Finance Minister’s call for Ghanaians to donate towards the construction.

Presenting the 2021 Mid-Year Budget Review statement on Thursday, the Ken Ofori-Atta revealed a ‘¢100-a-Month Club’ intending to mobilise “one million Ghanaians who will donate towards the construction of the National Cathedral.”

“We look forward to Mr Speaker and members of this august House joining the ‘¢100-a-Month Club’ and thus adding their names to the historic coalition that would build the National Cathedral to the glory of God and the edification of our nation and its people,” he entreated.

In this regard, he further announced a shortcode to facilitate the collection set to be launched as the ‘Ketewa Biara Nsua’ programme on August 12.

But a cross-section of Ghanaians will not have it.

They are questioning the basis on which government will make such a call when there are many important but stagnated national projects begging for financial support.

But speaking in defence of the drive to Accra-based Citi FM, CEO of the Secretariat, Dr Paul Opoku-Mensah, explained that “this is not a government initiative.”

“It was an update of the fundraising we said was going to happen, and it is not only happening, but it has become this creative process where new initiatives are introduced”.

He said the launch was “to ensure that as many Ghanaians as possible are given the opportunity to write their names in the history of the Cathedral.”

In November 2018, Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, whiles delivering the 2019 budget statement in Parliament, disclosed that government is, among other things providing the seed capital for the construction.

He, however, failed to mention how much government will commit as seed money to the project.

“The state is facilitating this process by providing the land, the Secretariat, and seed money for the preparatory phase,” he said.

Government says the National Cathedral is expected to be officially opened on March 6, 2024.

Don’t allow corrupt heads of public institutions to go scot-free – Haruna Iddrisu to SP

• He is not to target only politicians as he tries to fight corruption

• He will be succeeding Martin Amidu as the Special Prosecutor

Haruna Iddrisu, Minority Leader, has charged Kissi Agyebeng, Special Prosecutor (SP), to deal with heads of public institutions who turn out to be corrupt.

According to him, the SP should not make it a point to target only political officeholders as a means of fighting corruption.

He said, heads of public institutions have always gone untouched because politicians are the ones that corruption probes and prosecutions target.

Before Kissi Agyebeng was approved as Special Prosecutor on July 30, Haruna Iddrisu said on the floor of the House that, “Chief Directors and Chief Executives are left as if they don’t [engage in corruption]. Some of them do, and there is evidence. The focus should not only be on petty corruption where you see a policeman stop a trotro driver.”

Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, Majority Leader, on the other hand, called for a review of the laws governing the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

He noted that, it will empower the Special Prosecutor in the ex*****on of his mandate.

Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu stated that, the review of the laws will also prevent the Special Prosecutor from becoming a “toothless bulldog who can only bark but will not be able to bite.”

Kissi Agyebeng was then approved by Parliament after the recommendation from the Appointment Committee was read to the MPs.

“The committee has duly recommended the nominee of the President for the appointment of the Special Prosecutor in line with the Section 13 (3) and (8) of the Special Prosecutor Act 2017 and the standing orders of Parliament and recommends the nominee Mr Kissi Agyebeng to the House for approval.”

Kissi Agyebeng will be succeeding Martin Amidu as the Special Prosecutor.
