Scholarship Secretariat moves to clear £39M Student Loan mess left by past Government – Begins talks with UK Universities

The Mahama administration is taking bold steps to clean up the £39 million student loan debt abandoned by the previous government; a debt which many has described as a reckless legacy that has left countless Ghanaian students abroad stranded, humiliated, and uncertain about their future.

As part of President John Dramani Mahama’s unwavering commitment to restoring hope and dignity to Ghanaian students studying abroad, the Registrar of the Secretariat, Alex Kwaku Asafo Adjei has visited Brunel University, London, in a bid to find practical solution to the student loan debts.

In a high-level discussions with Management of the University led by Deputy Vice-Chancellor Jonathan Wastling, it has been agreed between the parties to audit and validate every student record and financial claims to ensure absolute transparency and value for money.

More importantly, initiating a structured payment plan to prevent further disruption to the academic journey of Ghanaian students abroad.

In an engagement with a section of the Ghanaian students at the Brunel University, Mr. Asafo Adjei remarked that President Mahama is committed to ensuring that they have a smooth academic journey without any disruptions.

“Let it be known: we will not allow the sins and failures of the past administration to destroy the futures of our young people. Under President Mahama’s leadership, competent governance is back, and we’re getting the job done. Be rest assured.”

“Tomorrow, we continue this important work at the University of Portsmouth.” Mr. Asafo Adjei encouraged the students.

KEN AGYAPONG’S CALL FOR AMNESTY YIELDS RESULTS AS UPPER WEST NPP REVOKES SUSPENSION OF NANDOM CONSTITUENCY SECRETARY

Days after Ken Ohene Agyapong, former NPP Presidential Aspirant and former Member of Parliament for the Assin Central Constituency mounted spirited advocacy for the Party to grant amnesty and institute measures to bring back all persons who have been suspended or left the party on the back of some grievances, the call appears to be yielding results.

It would be recalled that the call for amnesty by the former lawmaker was initially met with mixed reactions although it currently remains very popular among Ghanaians and has dominated political discussions in the last few days on both traditional and social media platforms.

On April 27, 2025, the Upper West Regional executives of the NPP lifted the suspension of Martin Wuoyang, Secretary for Nandom Constituency. This decision by the regional Party corroborates the imperativeness of Hon. Ken Agyapong’s call for amnesty as the Party pursues its rebuilding agenda with an overarching aim of recapturing power in 2028.
