Asante Kotoko to beg the fans to help in paying Fifa fine to avoid relegation

Asante Kotoko management member Nana Kwame Dankwah reveals the club will look to its supporters to clear a Fifa fine.

The Porcupine Warriors have been handed an ultimatum to pay up a fine of $240,000 [€218,915] by May 10 or face relegation to the Ghana second tier after being found guilty in a legal battle with Tunisian club Esperance.

Kotoko, arguably Ghana's biggest club, have won the Premier League on 23 occasions, being the most successful club.

“Yes, we have received the Fifa notice, and we have to act on it," Darkwah told Asempa FM.

“I believe that as a Kotoko family which entails management and the supporters, we need to make sure that we support our leader Kwame Kyei, so that we can find a solution to this problem.

“Let’s come together so that we find solutions on how we are going to pay this money."

The misunderstanding between Kotoko and Esperance involves the transfer of striker Emmanuel Clottey in 2015 and midfielder Kwame Bonsu last year.

“It's happened before, during Herbert Mensah’s time when Kotoko wrongfully dismissed Hans Dieter Schmidt, we were slapped with a huge fine," Darkwah added.

“Dr Sarpong was able to do an appeal for funds to raise money which was eventually topped up by management to clear the debt.

“So I will urge all of us to come together to help clear this current debt.”

Kotoko owed Esperance $180,000 [€164,195] from Clottey's acquisition.

After the Tunisians purchased Bonsu from the Porcupine Warriors last year for $150,000 [€136,829], Esperance also opted against paying up, instead deciding to offset the cost with part of Clottey's 2015 arrears and demanding $30,000 [€27,366] more from Kotoko to completely clear the striker's debt.

The issues reached the doors of Fifa who ruled in favour of the Tunisians.

Kotoko's management has come under heavy criticism for their role in leading to this heavy fine.

“There are issues but I feel it's not necessary at this point. Now is not the time to do interrogations and blame games," said Darkwah.

“Let's focus on clearing the debt first. And when all is sorted, we will learn the valuable lessons and avoid similar happenings in the future."

Kotoko owed Esperance $180,000 [€164,195] from Clottey's acquisition.

Former Black Stars player Windsor Kofi Abbrey last week in a radio interview appealed to the public to help him reunite with his friend George Oppong Weah, who was his playmate during their days at Tonnerre Yaounde of Cameroon.

Mr. Kofi Poku a close ally of President George Oppong Weah has stepped up to help the 1982 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winner to reunite with his best friend.

Mr. Poku who is a known friend of the Liberian President confirmed to the GNA Sports that both players were good friends from their playing days till President Weah was elected recently.

"Before he became president, both retired players met regularly in Accra anytime George Weah was in Ghana. There were even occasions Abbrey spent a lot of days at the residence of the president.

"They played together at Madina as old stars and i don't know how the Ghanaian legend lost the contact of the president. But I would do my best to link them up again," he stated.

Mr. Poku, however, admitted the challenges involved in linking the two retired players up saying "now that he is the president of Liberia, it had been very difficult to link up with him due to the numerous protocol challenges.

"There were days I travel to Liberia to see him and after days it proves futile so I had to return to Ghana," Mr. Poku lamented.

Mr. Poku, however, noted that he would still work the best way to have the two reunite.

Abbrey played for Eleven Wise, Accra Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko and was a regular member of the Black Stars in the early 80's.

David Moyes regrets missing out on Michael Essien to Everton

Michael Essien

Listen to the Article

West Ham United manager David Moyes has named former Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien as one of his biggest transfer regrets.

During his coaching stint at Everton, Moyes followed the 37-year-old midfield star when he was playing in Ligue 1 with Bastia and Lyon.

The Goodison Park outfit was unable to complete a move for him, with Essien joining Chelsea for a then club-record fee of £24.4 million in August 2005.

When quizzed about the players he regretted missing out on signing, Moyes named the two-time Premier League winner alongside Toni Kroos, Gareth Bale and Cesc Fabregas.

“One of them would be Michael Essien [to Everton],” he told beIN Sports.

“Toni Kroos would certainly be the one [to Manchester United].

“At that time we [Manchester United] were very much after Gareth Bale and Cesc Fabregas but I’ve got to say prior to that, at Everton, we were really close to a lot of good players.

"We just couldn’t quite get them over the line on several occasions.”

Essien spent nine years at Chelsea, winning two Premier League titles, four FA Cups and a Uefa Champions League trophy during his spell in England, before moving to AC Milan.

The former Ghana international is currently on the books of Azerbaijan Premier League outfit Sabail where he has played 10 league matches this campaign.

Mrs Evelyn Ama Kumi- Richardson, the Bono Regional Minister has directed the Dormaa West District Assembly to heighten surveillance at communities along Ghana Cote d'Ivoire borders to stem the import of the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) from neighbouring countries.

She said 24-hour surveillance activities ought to be strengthened particularly at Yaakrom, KofiBadukrom and Frimpongkrom, communities, as the government stepped up measures to help control the local transmission of the COVID-19 in the country.

The Regional Minister said the government had provided GHC50,000 to the District Assembly to fight the COVID-19 and the Assembly authorities were expected to do much particularly at the border towns.

Interacting with Assembly members, security services and key staff of the Dormaa West District Assembly at Nkrankwanta on Tuesday, Mrs Kumi-Richardson assured the government was doing all things possible to contain the spread of the disease.

But, she emphasised Ghanaian residents along the various border towns in the area had a high risk of contracting the disease and advised them to contribute their quota in ensuring new cases of COVID-19 were not imported into the country through those unapproved routes.

Mrs Kumi-Richardson told the Assembly to ensure the seven unapproved routes identified in the district were closed down and directed the security services to beef up security presence at those routes to check the influx of irregular migrants who could spread the disease in the local communities.

Mr Ali Maige, the Member of Parliament for Dormaa West advised the people to bury their political differences and forge ahead in unity towards the fight of the COVID-19.

He indicated the government directives on the CPVID-19 was in the supreme interest of the nation and advised Ghanaians to comply.

Mr Kennedy Ohene Agyei, the Dormaa West District Director of Health said 180 health officials and 25 community volunteers had been trained to help manage the spread of the disease in the area.

He said the directorate had set aside two cubicles as isolation centers at the district hospital at Nkrankwanta to manage suspected cases of the COVID-19.

Mrs Mary Ameyaa, the Dormaa West District Chief Executive, commended the security services and the district directorate of health for their support in helping to stem the spread of the COVID-19.

16/04/2020

Ashanti Regional Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Bernard Antwi Boasiako popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has indicated that it will take the implementation of drastic measures as was done in Wuhan Province in China to stop the spread of the novel coronavirus in the country.

He explained that in order for President Akufo-Addo's government to deal head-on with the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country, the government’s partial lockdown must be carried out without showing human face.

Contributing to a panel discussion on 'Wontumi Radio' in the Ashanti Region, Chairman Wontumi as popularly known maintained that countries that have dealt with the spread of the novel coronavirus took “wicked measures regardless of the effect they have on some individuals, so long as it inured to the larger good of containing the virus”.

Chairman Wontumi in his submission made it clear that without drastic measures, Ghanaians by nature as human beings will not comply with the measures unless they are forced to adhere to the directives.

He added that “in some countries, when people are caught outside in the lockdown, they are fined heavily, but in Ghana when people are caught outside, they are rather given food and pampered to go home”.

He was of the view that Ghanaians are not complying with the current directives due to the fact that they cannot see the novel coronavirus with their naked eyes as they can see rainfall and thunder, enforcing them to run for protection.

He reminded that the country is fighting the COVID-19 in order to save human lives and the economy as it is the situation in every country in the world that have been affected by the global pandemic; reiterating that “the COVID-19is claiming lives and economy”.

He, however, implored with the Akufo-Addo government to be mean in carrying out the directives to fight the novel coronavirus as being flexible with measures will not yield the intended purpose of the government.

*How does COVID-19 spread?*

🤧 People can catch COVID-19 from others who have the virus.

💦 The disease can spread from person to person through small droplets from the nose or mouth which are spread when a person with COVID-19 coughs or exhales.

🥄 These droplets land on objects and surfaces around the person.

👈 Other people then catch COVID-19 by touching these objects or surfaces, then touching their eyes, nose or mouth.

↔️ People can also catch COVID-19 if they breathe in droplets from a person with COVID-19 who coughs out or exhales droplets. This is why it is important to stay more than 1 meter (3 feet) away from a person who is sick.

WHO is assessing ongoing research on the ways COVID-19 is spread and will continue to share updated findings.

*Can the virus that causes COVID-19 be transmitted through the air?*
Studies to date suggest that the virus that causes COVID-19 is mainly transmitted through contact with respiratory droplets rather than through the air.

*Can COVID-19 be caught from a person who has no symptoms?*
The main way the disease spreads is through respiratory droplets expelled by someone who is coughing. The risk of catching COVID-19 from someone with no symptoms at all is very low. However, many people with COVID-19 experience only mild symptoms. This is particularly true at the early stages of the disease. It is therefore possible to catch COVID-19 from someone who has, for example, just a mild cough and does not feel ill.

WHO is assessing ongoing research on the period of transmission of COVID-19 and will continue to share updated findings.

Let's learn

*What are coronaviruses, COVID-19 and how are they related to SARS?*

*What is a coronavirus?*
Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses which may cause illness in animals or humans. In humans, several coronaviruses are known to cause respiratory infections ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). The most recently discovered coronavirus causes coronavirus disease COVID-19.

*What is COVID-19?*
COVID-19 is the infectious disease caused by the most recently discovered coronavirus. This new virus and disease were unknown before the outbreak began in Wuhan, China, in December 2019.

*Is COVID-19 the same as SARS?*
No. The virus that causes COVID-19 and the one that caused the outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in 2003 are related to each other genetically, but the diseases they cause are quite different. SARS was more deadly but much less infectious than COVID-19. There have been no outbreaks of SARS anywhere in the world since 2003.

Did you know that Nigeria 🇳🇬 Super Eagles fixed their world cup qualifiers match against Kenya 🇰🇪 Harambee stars to qualify for World Cup 2010?

Nigeria who were 2 points behind Tunisia ahead of final round needed a win in Nairobi and at least a draw in Maputo where Mozambique 🇲🇿 was hosting Tunisia 🇹🇳

Super Eagles fate was out of their hands and they sorted help from Wilson Raj Perumal a renowned Singapore match fixer.

Raj made it to Nairobi along side two other friends where they met three senior harambee stars players and planned how they would manipulate the match.

The three players who were two defenders and a goalkeeper would them let Obafemi Martins and Yakubu score three easy goals dimming the efforts of Dennis Oliech and Allan Wanga who scored two goals for Harambee stars.

In Maputo, the Mambas shocked Tunisia with 1:0 defeat after Raj promised them $100,000 if they could at least force Tunisia into a draw.

To pay back, Nigerian FA allowed Raj to plan Nigeria's Pre World Cup camp and three build up matches that he planned to fix.

FIFA carried out the investigation and in February 2014 Harambee Stars defender George Owino who was then playing for Kenya Premier League side Mathare United was given a life ban from football related activities.
