Sarkodie pops up again smoking a cigar

Rapper Sarkodie in 2021 made it clear that the photos that captured him holding or puffing a cigar are just to celebrate success and achievements. For this reason, he didn't see anything wrong with posing with ci**rs in his photos.

This came in after a section of Ghanaians called him out for promoting the smoking of ci**rs.

The celebrated musician on Monday, August 29, published new photos of himself with one of his huge ci**rs which have almost become his signature. The photos are believed to be from his upcoming music video.

Fans of the rapper couldn't help but comment on his drip. Sark looked dapper in white pants and a colourful shirt complemented with gold accessories.

Sarkodie in his 2021 interview on Hitz FM had this to say about his cigar brand and from all indications, he is not stopping any time soon.

"First, let me make it clear, smoking is not good but if you do a little research on ci**rs, in my world of entertainment, it’s for celebrating success and achievements. If you see the athletes that is what they do, they don’t smoke on regular basis but when they have something to celebrate that is when they use it...the only thing that threw me off is expecting me to apologize which I get it; that’s how we are in our culture. It’s very disrespectful to say that..but I don’t know who to apologize to for holding a cigar,” he said.

'All Musician will go,Mzvee will be left standing' - Lady Talata

A veteran Ghanaian musician has praised dancehall artiste, MzVee, for the quality of songs she produces.

According to Lady Talata, the dancehall artiste’s work sets her apart from the many musicians in the industry.

In an interview with Doreen Avio on Prime Morning Monday, the ‘Eye Odo Nkua’ hitmaker said that she sees her youthful days in MzVee, adding that the young artiste is hardworking and talented.

According to her, MzVee’s style of music is outstanding, making her the true definition of music, which will make her thrive in the music industry.

“MzVee always reminds me of my youthful days. She’s like the underdog, but she’s good. All the musicians will go, and she will be left standing. I started with other musicians, but they’ve all quit. You can hear music in MzVee,” she said.

Lady Talata also indicated that female musicians such as Eno Barony, Adina, Cina Soul, and Efya who are fighting to survive in a male-dominated industry are equally talented.

The ‘Yara Yara’ composer acknowledged the crucial role the internet has played in pushing Ghanaian musicians and their works, making it easy for upcoming artistes to break into the music fraternity.

She further encouraged Ghanaian musicians, particularly the female artistes, not to be deterred by negativity and to be focused.

Lady Talata also commended reggae and dancehall artiste, Samini, for his commitment and dedication towards the growth of the music industry in Ghana.

“Samini is very intelligent. He’s one of the musicians who shows up when we have something going on. In 2017, when they met at the late Paapa Yankson’s one week, he was there. He shows up everywhere,” she said.

The veteran musician, urged all young artistes to keep pushing the authentic Ghanaian music that the older generation handed over to them.

Lady Talata also called on Sarkodie and Shatta Wale to attend the final funeral rites of the late A.B. Crentsil and Nana Ampadu to pay their last respects.

The musician also said her doors are widely open to younger artistes who will want to work with her.

I felt like a prisoner -. Da' Hammer on why He pulled the break on music production.

Renowned music producer, Hammer of The Last has revealed he left music production years ago because he was bored with the monotonous nature of the job.

Speaking to Kafui Dei on GTV’s Breakfast Show, he explained that while producing, he was stuck in his studio day in day out, eating late, barely walking outside just to make beats for musicians.

“I was bored, I felt like a prisoner. For fifteen-plus years, I was locked up in a room with no window. The artistes come and go….these boys were out on stage jumping around, when they come back, you are still in that space,” he said.

Hammer added that “I sat down for 8 hours playing, making beats, producing and it got boring at some point. So, I became like an uncaged dog when I got the chance to get out. That’s why you see me on the street.”

The renowned producer blames his weight on the endless hours he spent in the studio rarely getting any exercise just so he could work.

“My name is ‘Slim The Hammer’ I wasn’t fat, I was an athlete in Presec. So, this business of becoming big was the studio,” Hammer said.

Hammer noted that after putting a pause on production, he got into other businesses including partnering with a baker to introduce one of Accra’s popular bread brands and most recently Ekumfi juice.

But, Hammer stated that after seven years he is ready to start producing and making music again.

“I have a small set up at home that my children use, so after the playing around, I want to get the thing back to my fingers. I’m gonna need some help though. It’s been 7 years since I touched equipment.”

Kumerican has lost its steam - Industry players

When Kumerica hit the country a couple of years ago, it was greeted with so much zeal and excitement but in recent times, the movement seems to be gradually dying out.

It was huge, permeating everywhere, talk of paraphernalia, attitude and its biggest offshoot Kumerica music which unearthed fresh talents from the Ashanti Region who shook the very foundation of our music industry.

The music style, described as Drill, became the in thing, even attracting international stars such as UK’s Stormzy and Kenyan’s Kaligraph Jones respectively featuring Kumericans Yaw Tog and Kofi Jamar.

Graphic Showbiz spoke to a number of industry players who are all of the opinion that the once vibrant movement has lost its steam.

According to Ola Micheal, host of Entertainment GH on Neat FM, “I was part of the people who were excited about it and pushing it. I think it was a good thing. It came during the COVID-19 period when everybody was idle and at home; it brought a lot of excitement. The noise, the excitement, the euphoria and everything is gone but it’s been able to also generate a handful of new talents and celebs in their own rights so it’s a great thing but it is not as vibrant as we expected it to be. Two years on, we expected it to be very strong but now it is slow.”

Asked what he thinks can be done to bring Kumerica back to life, he said: “Honestly, it is a Ghanaian culture thing; we are unable to sustain things for long. I think they could have positioned it well and made it a pillar that they all rally around to push it. It got to a point when everybody was doing his or her own thing and that is what brought the division so if they really want to get it back, they have to restructure it. We all have to rally around no matter where you come from”.

For his part, movie producer Socrate Safo said Kumerica music was really a good thing. “Once it was promoting something positive and not bringing about crime, then it was really good. What I know is that most of those guys were loitering around Kejetia so coming together to do the Kumerica movement was a good thing that took them away from all those vices. That is the information I have,” he said.

“I have also noticed that it has gone down in recent times. It seems some of them separated because greed set in. Individuals such as Kwaku Darlington and the others went solo and did well but as a group, they had issues because everybody was trying to use it for their own business.

For music producer Appiah Dankwa (popularly known as Appietus), “Kumerica is like any other genre or style of music that has come up. We came from Highlife to Hiplife to Azonto to Alkaida to Armapiano and Kumerica, so we keep going. In Ghana, we always bring flavour, so it is no news. It is something that has been happening since my career started. In Ghana, we always look for new things. I don’t know why. American HipHop and Jamaican Reggae have been there since time immemorial; they haven’t changed. Even Nigerians took hold of Afropop and they have held on to it, but Ghana is always trying to change and I don’t know why.”

Asked if Kumerica music could bounce back, Appietus said: “I doubt if they will be able to do so because we tried to bring Azonto back and it didn’t work so that is what it is,” he concluded.

Kumerican artiste Kofi Jamar is, however, upbeat about the music style, saying it is still on but has naturally slowed down.

“Kumerica is not dead, it is still giving a chance to many Kumasi artistes to shine. Nothing stays the same, it goes through a cycle. Yes, it is not out there like it used to be but it has done a lot for the music industry. We shouldn’t focus on it not being bubbly anymore but on the positive impact it has had on our industry”, he stated.

Artists act like gods when they get hits songs - BullGod Of Bullhaus

CEO of Bullhaus Entertainment, Bulldog, has lamented the behavior of some music artistes after they find success in their careers.

He spoke on Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z show, during a discussion on the reasons, dangers and way forward in artistes failing to show up for events they have been booked and paid for. According to Bulldog, some artistes lack the discipline, and change for the worse after getting a hit song.

“An artiste would release a song… no structure, then boom the song goes all over the world, now they are gods in their own sense,” he disclosed. The experienced Artiste Manager shared his opinion based on his dealings with various artistes, and further noted that it is tough to assist artistes who are negatively controlled by fame.

“The few shows that come up, you guys go and play, then when they say [to the fans], ‘put your hands up’, the whole like forty thousand people, [indeed raise their hands]”. He revealed that it’s difficult to dictate to artistes when they attain such heights.

Bulldog insinuated that some of the artistes aren’t discreet and lack foresight in their careers. He mentioned how their vision is restricted to owning a car, a house, and chasing after women.

However, he believes that until artists learn how to construct bigger visions for themselves, they will fall short of becoming legends like Michael Jackson and Bob Marley, both of whom are of blessed memory but keep making impact in the lives of many.

'Sugarcane is my biggest hit';not my best song- Camidoh

Ghanaian musician Camidoh says his banging tune ‘Sugarcane’ is undoubtedly his biggest hit song, but not his best.

According to the ‘For My Lover’ crooner, all his songs are great.

In an interview on the ‘Xclusives’ show on JoyPrime, the artiste explained that he invests a lot of time and craft in creating all his songs, and as such, can’t tip one as his best over the others.

“Yeah I agree, clearly it’s my biggest hit yet, because if you check the numbers, the consumption rate, yeah, it is my biggest hit but not my best song. All my songs are 100%. I carefully create my music taking into consideration the production, lyrics, everything is 100% so I’ll never say that this song is better than the other,” he told host Noella Kharyne Yalley.

He also shared some of the strategic plans he and his team took to ensure the success of Sugarcane.

According to him, they paid influencers to create content with the song.

“It was deliberate of myself and team to engage influencers to create content with Sugarcane to market it. It’s work, so if you need work done, you’ve got to pay.”

It is shallow to think 'sugarcane' is doing well because Nigerian accent- Camidoh to critics

Ghanaian musician, Camidoh has responded to critics who believe he found success with his banging tune ‘Sugarcane’ because he sounded Nigerian.

According to him, it is quite shallow for anybody to think like that.

In an interview on the ‘Xclusives’ show on JoyPrime, he quizzed why most Ghanaians seem to enjoy and hail foreigners for singing in our local dialect, yet when Ghanaian musicians do the same, it’s a problem.

He told Noella Kharyne Yalley that “It is their opinion for which they’re entitled to. With time, people will get to understand that we were never meant to be just Ghana. We were meant to be African. I’m Ewe, if I chose to go by that mentality, I’ll be doing music solely in Ewe. And if we think like that, then we will be encouraging boundaries. It’s 2022, and a time the world is trying to be one.

“So if we’re going to sit here and allow Nigerians, South Africans, come to Ghana, borrow our words, make music with it and we jam to it, yet when we (Ghanaian musicians) borrow their words and make music with it, we (Ghanaians) criticize it, then we’ve erred. So whoever thinks that I’m shining in the shadows of another country, it’s a shallow way of looking at things,” he said.

He also admonished Ghanaians to back down on the criticisms and embrace evolution around creativity.

“Let’s back down on the criticisms, and embrace evolution and creativity. It’s not like it’s deliberate to sound Nigerian, am I only going to make my money in Nigeria?

“No! Is the Nigerian sound the sound of the world? No! The world is open to listening to every sound that’s quality. So let’s not make it seem like I’m trying to deliberately sound Nigerian so I can tap into their market.”
