There are times in everyone's life when we feel alone. Teenagers often feel alone thinking that their parents don't understand them, they don't fit in with the popular crowd in school, or they're not sure they even like themselves. The elderly can feel alone when they have lost many of their friends; they may have lost a spouse or a child. They may have had to sell their home or had to move into a nursing home far from family. Young mothers can feel alone, unsure of their ability to cope with a newborn and without the stimulation of adult conversation. When all the children have left a home, the parents often feel alone, wondering who they are now that their parenting days are over. Retirees often have a sense of loss of their identity. When a tragedy strikes, we can even feel abandoned by God. Jesus is speaking to the apostles in this passage knowing that they will abandon him and scatter in fear, leaving him alone. However, he is also telling them that he is not alone; the Father is with him and will not abandon him. Even when he quotes Psalm 22 while he hangs on the cross, he is stating his firm belief that he is not alone, his Father who has been with him all along, is with him even then. It is the same with us. No matter what is going on in our lives, God is with us, a loving Father who will never leave us alone. I have always liked the verse in Isaiah 49 that lets us know that "Though a mother may forget her child I will not abandon you." If we are feeling alone, turn to the Lord. Close your eyes, sit in a favorite chair, picture the Father's presence beside you and breathe in his love.

3 THINGS YOU DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT DENKYIRA KINGDOM - Episode 4 (Mother’s Day Edition)

1) Women are very sacred to Denkyira Kingdom because the spiritual and social philosophies of the Denkyira Kingdom was established by a woman called Nana Ayekra Adeboe. It was this amazing woman who Twene-Adu-ampon Kwame entrusted the Supreme Bankam Dwa and its three Guardian Archangels/beings to be the first Priest-King of Denkyira. She established the Odwira Festival. This festival was first celebrated to cleanse/purge the Bankam Dwa and the Kingdom of Denkyira from any evil forces. *Odwira* means to purge or cleanse - Denkyira celebrated the first Odwira as a national festival around 1502. *Nana Ayekra Adeboe* was the one who instituted the isolation of women during their menstruation from family houses with deities. She believed me**es ward of deities and women needed to be isolated during that period. She instituted *mfikyiri koro* for women as ancient Denkyira Tradition. She also established the *Ankobia Divison* of Denkyira Kingdom to take care of women and children during wars. The safety of women was her topmost priority.

2) Nana Ayekra Adeboe instituted that pre-marital s*x was unclean and defied the Bankam Dwa and Denkyira Kingdom. So she instituted *Bragoro* and customs surrounding it to usher young girls into womanhood after their first menstruation. This she believed was to add value to the girl-child by preparing her into womanhood and also maintain the sacred state of her Kingdom. Nana Ayekra Adeboe passed on to the ancestral dwellings in 1587 after living a long life.

3) In 1662-1677, the Denkyira Kingdom was led by *Nana Boadu Ankafu Berempong.* She totally defeated Adansi king, Awurade Basa, after Awurade waged war against Denkyira during the death of Odeefuor Werempe Ampem. In the 1640s, Denkyira King, Odeefuor Mumunomfi conquered the Adansi King, Otibreko Asare. Odeefuor Mumunomfi appointed Awurade Basa as the leader of Adansi after he conquered it. So when Werempe Ampem died and Denkyira was led by a female king, *Nana Boadu Ankafu Berempong,* Awurade Basa sought to take revenge on Denkyira once and for all. But Odeefuor Boadu Ankafu Berempong conquered Awurade Basa and humbled Adansi. In 1732-1773, *Odeefuor Amoako Atta Yiadom* was also a woman who became leader of Denkyira Kingdom. She also continued to gather the remaining states of Denkyira after the infamous Denkyira civil riots in 1698 and Feyiase Battle in 1701. She succeeded King Kyei Akobeng and led her people and gave them hope for the future as prophecied by Nana Ayekra Adeboe that so far as the Bankam Dwa exist, Denkyira can always be rebuild and become great.

Today, we acknowledge the great Denkyira women who had to step in as Kings when the going was tough. We also appreciate and invoke the spirit of the great Queens who aided their children (Kings of Denkyira) to lead their people successfully. Women are regarded as the true owners of towns or states in Denkyira Kingdom. Today, we wish our brave, supportive and beautiful women especially *Nana Ama Ayensu Saara III (Denkyirahemaa)*, Happy Mother’s Day.

3 THINGS YOU DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT DENKYIRA KINGDOM - Episode 3

1) Many people do not understand why the Denkyira Kingdom calls Akyem Kotoku Paramountcy and Adansi Bodwesango State as siblings. The grand matriarch of these three separate domains was Nana Bomaasi. Nana Bomaasi gave birth to Nana Agobami, Nana Anodineho and Nana Siema. This happened around the 1400s. The descendant of Nana Agobami who is Nana Ayekra Adeboe created Denkyira Kingdom which is also known as Agona Piesie. The descendants of Nana Anodineho, Nana Yaw Awere, created Nnobiamu which later metamorphosed into Akyem Kotoku Paramountcy which is also known as Agona Manu. The descendant of Nana Siema, which is Nana Owusu Dwamadua established the Mmraim State which they later migrated to form the Nkatieso and later to be called Adansi Bodwesango. Bodwesango is known as the last born or Agona Mensah among the siblings. So the royals of Denkyira, Akyem Kotoku and Adansi Bodwesango are blood relatives from Nana Bomaasi's bloodline.

2) The term AGONA Clan came from the name Ago-bami. Agona or Ago-Nana means the grandchildren of Ago. Nana Agobami was affectionately called Nana Ago by all who knew her. So her people were known as Ago nananom or Agona for short.

3) In around 1498, when the Bankam Dwa of the Denkyira Kingdom descended from the sky and landed on the oil palm tree, it was a parrot that announced it to the Priestess-Queen Nana Ayekra Adeboe. When Nana Ayekra Adeboe got to the oil palm tree, she saw many parrots eating the oil palm fruit from the tree the stool landed on. This brought about the saying, "s3 wo hunu ako a, mento ne boba na ofiri dodo) mu" trans "when you see a parrot, don't stone it because it comes from pandemonium". It was Nana Ayekra Adeboe who adopted the parrot eating palm fruit as the royal totem (akraboa) of the Agona Clan.

When all is said and done, remember that Nana Ayekra Adeboe established most of the spiritual philosophies governing the Denkyira Kingdom. Most of these philosophies were adopted by the Asante Kingdom which is an offshoot of the ancient Denkyira Kingdom.
