OBINIM AND DRIVER FINED GH¢ 1,200

The Founder of the International God’s Way Church, Bishop Daniel Obinim, and his driver have been fined to the tune of GH¢ 1,200 for illegally using strobe lights and sirens.

The fine was slapped on the preacher by the Akropong Magistrate Court on Wednesday, February 2, 2022.

Bishop Obinim together with his driver, Eric Kofi Agyeman were captured in a video driving a Toyota Landcruiser fitted with strobe lights and siren contrary to road traffic regulations 74 (1) of Road Traffic Regulation 2012 LI 2180.

Police investigation upon a review of the video footage led to the arrest of the driver, Eric Kofi Agyeman, and the owner of the vehicle, Bishop Daniel Obinim.

The two were then put before the Akropong Magistrate Court.

The court further ordered them to remove all unapproved strobe lights and sirens on the vehicle.

Under the supervision of the police, the strobe lights and sirens were removed and same retained by the police.

“We are appealing to car owners to stop fixing strobe lights and sirens, which they are not entitled to, on their vehicles. Car owners who flout the law will be prosecuted”, the police said in a statement.

There is a growing trend in Ghana where drivers especially SUV owners use sirens to weave through traffic, causing public nuisance in the process and also enjoying an unmerited advantage over other road users.

It’s however an offence to use these strobe lights and sirens without lawful approval.

The police have on a number of occasions vowed to clamp down on drivers who use sirens unlawfully.

Offenders of the traffic regulation are liable to a fine of not more than 25 penalty units or a term of imprisonment of not more than 30 days, or both.

*The Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) says it will embark on a strike from tomorrow Wednesday, January 5, 2022.*
The strike, according to the group is to demand arrears in their professional development allowances.

TEWU members include bursars, cooks, cleaners, administrators, accountants, auditors, among others.

At a news conference in Accra on Tuesday, General Secretary of TEWU, Mark Denkyira Korankye, said “all our members, both in the schools, district, and regional offices are going to withdraw our services until an amicable settlement of this matter is reached”.

He explained that “It was resolved, among others that if by the close of the year 2021, if the professional development allowances had not been paid to the non-teaching staff of the Ghana Education Service, then as schools reopen for the last phase of the second semester, our members would withdraw their services to push home our demand of the payment of this professional development allowances”.

Mr Korankye said the strike will only be called off if their demands are met.“Government must with immediate effect stop the naked discrimination against TEWU and pay members their continuous professional development allowance.” he added.

According to the National Association of Sachet and Packaged Water Producers, the increment has been necessitated by the rising cost of inputs and the rate of cedi depreciation. A bag of water, which is currently retailed at GH¢4.50, is also expected to increase to GH¢6.00.

Some Members of Parliament on Monday night were engaged in a fistfight following a disagreement during the voting on government’s E-levy bill. The fight ensued when the MPs were voting in a headcount to decide whether the E-levy bill should be accepted under a certificate of urgency.

The Minority had attempted to stop the First Deputy Speaker, Joseph Osei Owusu, who was presiding over the House, from leaving his seat and participating in the voting process.
This infuriated the Majority MP, who met them at the Speaker’s table to challenge the NDC MPs.
