Due to this year’s elections in Ghana, we celebrate #FarmersDay this Friday November 8th. On this annual day, we celebrate farmers and fishermen as they play a large part in Ghana's national food supply. As we work together with various farmers, we will celebrate this year's Farmers day on Friday together with Plan International Ghana with our #StrongerTogetherTogether project.
Here are a few facts about Ghana's agricultural landscape:
- Agriculture contributes to 54% of Ghana's GDP, and accounts for over 40% of export earnings.
- Ghana's agriculture provides over 90% of the food needs for the country.
- Most farmers in Ghana are smallholder, traditional farmers making use of the seasons (rain-fed agriculture).
- Women farmers make up approximately half of Ghana’s farmers.
- 57% of Ghana's total land area is classified as "agricultural land area".
- Most farmers experience depleted soil due to the extensive use of chemical fertilizers. Farmers are starting to understand the negative effects of chemical fertilizers on their land and consumer's health, opting for more organic alternatives like Asase Gyefo Premium Organic Fertilizer.
Stay tuned for this Friday, we will publish an exclusive interview with one of the female farmers Safisana works with.
