*HOW TO CALCULATE TV MOUNTING HEIGHT*
*Method 1*
One of the most challenging parts of mounting a TV on a wall is finding the right optimal height. Depending on whether you will be watching TV seated, standing, or both, you need to determine the best viewing height for the situation.
To calculate the ideal TV mounting height, consider the following factors:
1. TV size
2. Viewing distance from the TV
3. Eye level height from the floor
4. Reclining sitting angle
*1. TV Size (TVS)*
The size of the TV greatly affects the TV mounting height. When purchasing a TV, the size is usually marked on the box (e.g., 32″, 40″, 55″, etc.). Alternatively, you can measure the size of your TV diagonally, excluding the bevel.
*2. Viewing Distance (VD)*
Viewing distance refers to the distance between the TV screen and the viewer's seating position. For optimal viewing, the viewing distance can be calculated based on the TV size. Measure from the viewer's seating position to the wall where the TV will be mounted (in inches). The optimal VD can be calculated using the following formula:
*Formula 1:* Viewing Distance (VD) = TVS × 1.67
This is the optimum TV viewing distance based on TV size. If your room layout prevents you from sitting at the optimum distance, measure the actual distance.
*Example:* If your TV size (TVS) is 32, the optimal Viewing Distance (VD) should be 53 inches, calculated as follows:
*32 × 1.67 = 53*
Therefore, your ideal Viewing Distance (VD) is *53 inches.*
This formula is optimized for a 30-degree viewing angle, which falls within the recommended limits set by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers, THX, and manufacturers for 16:9 HDTV.
*3. Eye Level Height (ELH) from the Floor*
Eye level height is the distance, in inches, from the floor to the viewer's eyes while seated and watching TV. Simply measure from the floor to the viewer's eyes.
For instance, when seated on a couch (sofa), the eye level from the floor is typically between *40-42* inches, but for the purposes of this study, *we use 40 inches.*
*4. Reclining Angle (RA)*
If the viewer sits upright with their torso at a 90 degree angle to the floor, the reclining angle is zero. However, if the viewer reclines, the angle is measured from the vertical. The more the viewer reclines, the higher the TV mounting height should be.
Typically, couch (sofa) manufacturers recommend a reclining angle of *10-15* degrees for casual sitting.
*TV Mounting Height (TVMH)*
Now that we know all the parameters contributing to TV mounting height, we can calculate it using the following formula:
*Formula 2:*
*Step 1:* Find the viewing distance by multiplying the TV size by 1.67.
*Step 2:* Multiply 0.22 by the viewing distance and add the eye level height (40).
*Example:* Viewing Distance (VD) = TVS × 1.67
TV Mounting Height (TVMH) = 0.22 × VD + ELH
Now, let's calculate the TV mounting height for a 32-inch TV:
TVS = 32
VD = 32 × 1.67 = 53
TVMH = 0.22 × VD (53) + ELH (40)
TVMH = 0.22 × 53 + 40
TVMH = 52 inches
*32 x 1.67 x 0.22 + 40 = 52*
*Breakdown:*
- TV size: 32 inches
- Viewing distance: 53 inches
- Eye level height: 40 inches
- TV mounting height: 52 inches
Therefore, the optimal TV mounting height for a 32-inch TV is 52 inches.
This formula assumes a 12.5-degree reclining angle for simplicity and calculates the distance in inches from the floor to the middle of the TV.
As a rule of thumb:
- A 32-inch TV should be mounted approximately 52 inches from the floor to the center of the TV screen.
- A 42-inch TV should be mounted approximately 55 inches from the floor to the center of the TV screen.
- A 55-inch TV should be mounted approximately 60 inches from the floor to the center of the TV screen.
- A 65-inch TV should be mounted approximately 65 inches from the floor to the center of the TV screen.
- A 70-inch TV should be mounted approximately 67 inches from the floor to the center of the TV screen.
