Akan is the largest ethnic group in Ghana, making up about 45% of the Ghanaian population. They occupy practically the whole of Ghana south and west of the Black Volta.

Their culture is one of Africa's matrilineal cultures, which trace their descent from female ancestors.

The Akan people are good farmers and merchants though gold mining is their prominent source of income.

The Adowa dance is unique to the Akan people. Just like other tribes, the Akans have their unique culture and religion; the most prominent is an ancestor cult, the rites of which serve to enforce tribal unity and morality

Some of the popular people from Akan include the actress Jackie Appiah and former Ghana President Kwame Nkrumah.
