I’m Quirky
John MacCalman
In March 2020 I decided to write my Autobiography. It covers my 35 years at Radio Clyde, time in the Music Business Publishing and Management, Festival Organiser, Worldwide Travel Experience as a Consultant, Research on Micronesia - Air Mike, Website for Thai Rock Band, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Las Vegas Casinos - Circus Circus, Multi - Million Miles frequent Flyer.
After around six months intensive research and writing I had a rough draft and a title. I had chosen "I'm QUIRKY, Just Weird Enough To Be Intriguing, But Not Enough To Repel" I had wanted to keep it simply I'm QUIRKY but I discovered there were several books with that title so I expanded it to make it unique.
At the same time I started the hunt for a publisher. Thorough research revealed that there were plenty of so called "publishers" out there that were willing to take large sums of up front money from you just so you could get you book "published". I avoided them and made approaches to a few legitimate publishers who I felt may be right for my work. After multiple rejections from them I decided to examine the possibility of self-publishing.
In doing this the most important aspect of self-publishing would be ensuring the world-wide distribution of the finished product.
I had managed to find a printer local to me who would be able to print and organise the ISBN registration, however he was unable to organise distribution, I would have to do that myself. I had an excellent meeting with him which steered me on several key points of book production and I was able to get a solid price on the whole production and printing process.
By the end of December 2020 I was ready to go ahead but was still trying to resolve the issue of worldwide distribution. In particular I needed to have the book available on Amazon, but I could not set up a decent arrangement with them.
It was then I came across York Publishing Services. An initial study of their very professional website had me very interested, but I was still cautious. The key for me would be the distribution.
I filled in their contact form and initially just asked if I could set up a distribution-only arrangement whereby I would use my own printer. I had a speedy response (always did on future correspondence) but they advised they could only do distribution if they were doing printing. This actually made sense to me so I filled in the form again asking for a quote on printing and distribution. When this came back I found the pricing was very similar to what I had from my Glasgow based printer, but there were several extra benefits of going with YPS including the setting up of ISBNs, the proof checking stages, and several other important aspects of the whole business. While among the services the offered was cover design, I had my own designer who had produced the cover I wanted, but this would be OK.
I did further research on YPS and found much to praise them, however I needed to be really sure and was able to set up a phone call with Duncan Beal to talk through all my concerns. There is something special about personal contact and for me the Yorkshire way of doing business struck home.
I had one concern over my relationship with my local printer as I was going to go with YPS, but that was resolved - I had offer to make a small "consultancy" payment to him for his time, but instead he asked that I made a donation to his favourite local charity which I did.
I decided to go with YPS and have had no regrets. From the proof stages through the printing to the final product they have been outstanding. I now have worldwide distribution on Amazon.co.uk and well as through the YPD Bookstore which can reach parts of the world that Amazon can't and accept payments through PayPal. Their speedy dispatch of orders has amazed many people who have bought my book.
My advice to anyone considering self-publishing, please take your time to read through everything on the YPS Website and on the YPD Bookstore. Then send off for a quote - it doesn't cost you. Remember you must have some of your own funds if you are self-publishing, so take that into account.
