Theatre Show 🎭 Lessons on Revolution

🗓️ April 2nd 2025
📍Black Box Theatre
🕖 7pm

This is a story about change, how it happens, how we talk about it.

1968, London School of Economics. Three thousand students occupy a lecture hall, demanding the university cut ties with apartheid-era Rhodesia. Tensions escalate as the students fight for radical change while the administration pushes back. The world watches, waiting to see who will blink first.

2024, a cramped Camden flat. Two flatmates dive into the archives from 1968, discovering the student movement that electrified their local streets fifty years earlier. When the rent on their unsafe flat goes up again, they turn to the past to reignite their belief in the future.

Samuel Rees and Gabriele Uboldi’s play brings the most significant protest of a generation to life through the voices of those who lived it. Lessons On Revolution is a “compelling and galvanising” (James Graham) journey to 1968.

In this talk, Zach will explore ways to leverage VR technology to support the creative process while at the same time using performance techniques to explore the capabilities of immersive and interactive technologies. He will explain the connections between Drama and VR through two main research projects, The Virtual rehearsal Suite (VRS) and VR Thresholding Protocol. The VRS provides users with the experience of a large-scale rehearsal or performance environment while occupying limited physical space and minimal real-world obstructions. The Thresholding Protocol applies Drama techniques to support IRL-VR-IRL state change. He will also provide examples of the potential of Drama techniques in broader HCI contexts reflecting on interdisciplinary research collaborations in games, privacy and security, and human robot interaction and human drone interaction.

Module Spotlight ✨ Advanced Cinematography 🎥

This 3rd-year FTP optional module gave students hands-on experience with professional cinematography techniques. Each week, they took part in both lectures and practical sessions, learning to work with high-end cameras like the Arri Alexa Mini LF and Red Dragon, as well as a range of lenses, grip, and lighting equipment.

📍 Practical sessions took place in Studio 2, where a house set allowed students to experiment with lighting and composition in different rooms. The final assessment challenged them to set up and film a two-shot scene in just 30 minutes, testing their technical and creative skills under time pressure.

Swipe to see them in action! 🎬

Last week, we bid farewell to University of York's Professor Mike Cordner, co-founder of the Department of Theatre, Film, Television, and Interactive Media, as he begins his well-deserved retirement. 🎭✨

Mike’s dedication to the department and to the field of theatre has left a lasting legacy. To mark this special occasion, we hosted a final lecture-performance, “Speak that I may see thee,” which celebrated his groundbreaking "Shakespeare’s Rivals" research project. 📚🎬 It explored the diverse, innovative works of English playwrights from the late 1580s to 1642, whose brilliant achievements are often unjustly overshadowed by Shakespeare's.

A big thank you to our York for Life alumni - turned-professional actors — Hannah Eggleton, Joshua Mark Welch, John Chisham, Nik Miller, and our very own Head of the School of Tom Cantrell—for making the performance unforgettable. 👏🎭

Mike, your impact will be felt for years to come. Wishing you all the best in this next chapter! 🎉

Led by the Shakespeare’s Rivals project, with new Head of School Tom Cantrell, this event brings scripts to life with staged performances by returning theatre graduates turned professional actors.

With sequences from Middleton, Jonson, Massinger, and Beaumont & Fletcher—showcasing the exhilarating challenges and rewards of these extraordinary plays.

📅 Don’t miss this exploration of pre-Civil War theatre!
