❤️ Sue Ryder Launches Grief Kind Space in Thirsk to Tackle Grief Loneliness

National healthcare and bereavement charity, Sue Ryder is offering Thirsk’s bereaved residents the opportunity to access informal, peer-to-peer bereavement support, with the launch of the town’s first Grief Kind Space, providing an opportunity for people who have experienced the death of a loved one, to share their feelings and experiences with each other.

Following the successful launch of Sue Ryder Grief Kind Spaces in other parts of the country, the charity has teamed up with Rural Arts, based at the Old Courthouse, Westgate, to offer the free weekly drop-in sessions, which will help alleviate the isolation and loneliness felt by many people in the area, when a loved one has died…

🏍️ Thirsk Care Home Welcomes Local Bikers to ‘Two-Wheeled Spectacular’

Residents at Hambleton Grange care home in Thirsk welcomed groups of local bikers to their home, who came to show the residents their sleek scooters and handsome hogs.

Knowing that several residents at Hambleton Grange shared a passion for motorbikes, staff at Hambleton Grange arranged the ‘Two-Wheeled Spectacular’ with biker groups in the area, giving the residents an opportunity to see a wide variety of bikes, chat with the riders, and even sit on the bikes themselves.

82-year-old resident, Michael Easdale, said, ‘I really enjoyed sitting on a motorcycle again. I have owned many bikes in my life, the most recent being a Norton 650, which I absolutely loved…'

📚 An Evening with Ian Moore at White Rose Bookshop in Thirsk

Once again, Thirsk’s independent book shop White Rose Bookshop entertained a lively and amusing evening with famous serious and comedy crime author and stand-up comedian, Ian Moore to a full house last Monday evening.

His soiree involved readings from his latest book “Vivre le Chaos”, and chats about his family’s move to rural France in the Loire valley over twenty years ago highlighted the difficulties he encountered of learning a new language and the differences in thought processes between him as an Englishman and the French around him.

The book is highly entertaining and amusing as well, and indicating some of the problems he had with his own family of increasingly numbers of children easily learning French and French manners, to his own encounters with a mindset and lifestyle and his difficulties in learning the language and traditions and etiquette rules there…

📺 Betty Reunites with Popular TV Veterinarian

92-year-old Betty Taylor from Hambleton Grange care home in Thirsk reunited with friend and famous television veterinarian, Julian Norton, at his local book signing.

Betty appeared on an early episode of The Yorkshire Vet when Julian treated her Shih Tzu, Billy. The pair became good friends and stayed in touch for years, but lost touch when Julian moved to a new practise. Betty said,

‘I’ve known Julian for so long, he used to look after my dogs and guinea pigs. I love him, he’s just wonderful…

🏁 Thirsk in the Fast Lane!

If you think that carting is a sport of buggies propelled by lawn mower engines, think again! Lewis Hamilton, who has just won his ninth Grand Prix race on the Silverstone circuit - a course record, started out carting when he was eight!

Very much hoping he will emulate his precedent is fifteen year old Oliver Watson, a student at Thirsk High School, who is racing in the first Junior British Pro Carts Championship.

He has blasted his way through rounds two and three, and according to his mechanic and mentor father, in a very good position to add another trophy to his sideboard…

🏃🏃🏼‍♀️ Thirsk and Sowerby Harriers

There was a dearth of races this weekend but Phillip Craig managed to find one, the Masham 6 hour challenge, which is "just what it says on the tin"!

You run as far as you can in 6 hours on a set, 3.55 mile course in the lovely countryside around Masham.

The route is on road, trail and fields, one of them being across the golf course where you had to keep an eye out for golf balls - in other places, the long grass made it difficult to see the trail.

Phillip and his friends had food organized at the end of each lap so they could rest and refresh if they wanted to, which Phillip did after each 2 laps…

In June 2023, whilst staying with friends near Hamilton, Ontario, I did Parkrun at a wonderful location alongside Lake Ontario - somewhat different from the Millfield here in Easingwold.

It was so good, I went back again a couple of weeks’ ago! Bad news - start time 8.00am! Still worth it though…

🏃🏼‍♀️🏃 Thirsk and Sowerby Harriers

The second race in two weeks in the HDSRL Series took place at Ilkley on Thursday evening, with 15 club members present out of the 366 finishers.

The evening was pleasant enough for the race of about 5 miles, which starts from Ilkley Rugby Club before a long, long uphill pull, from where it levels off along back lanes and then a long downhill, finishing along the road back to the club.

The evergreen, ever present, Paul Peacock was first club finisher 40th, and 2nd M60, in 32.14.

Next came Josh Cooper, !05th in 36.07 and Pedro Carrasco 204th in 41.28, with Martyn Coy a minute behind in 42.28…

🙌 Scouting in Tholthorpe has Grown!

Success breeds success and Scouting is no different. Scouting in Tholthorpe is thriving and due to the demand, a new Scout Troop at Kyle Valley Scout Group has launched.

The Scout Troop offers exciting activities and adventures for boys and girls aged 10 to 14. Without the support of the local community and volunteers, this wouldn’t be possible. The support shown to the group is reciprocated and the young people endeavour to pour back into their local space and beyond…

😔 Sixth Form with No Pupils on Roll Set to Permanently Close

The sixth-form of a local high school is set to close at the end of July as there are currently no pupils studying at the site after the age of 16.

The overall numbers of post-16 students on the roll at Boroughbridge High School have been falling for several years.

As a result, and following consultation in the autumn of 2021, the decision was made in the spring of 2022 by the federated governing board of Boroughbridge High School and King James’s School to temporarily suspend entries to the sixth form for two years from September of that year…

📚 Highly Entertaining Poetry Reading at White Rose Books in Thirsk with Kate Fox

A mixed age range of fans listened intently last Saturday morning in the garden of White Rose Book shop in Thirsk to Dr. Who fan poetess Kate Fox, who recited from memory some of her poems and then talked about her life and experiences as she discovered her ADHD/Autistic capabilities, and how they have had a significantly important positive impact on her life and work.

This sparked interest and support from her audience in the garden surroundings, amid noise from next door and the bird song.

Kate’s bubbly enthusiasm and personality countered any distractions around and thrived…

❤️ Blood Cancer UK Fundraiser

You all do such a great job and I was wondering if I could get a shout out for my charity run first Friday in July at Sessay cricket club.

September last year was a tough time for my family as my dad (John Flintoff) was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia and was given 4 months to live.

Thanks to the amazing NHS who picked up the cancer straight away dad was given a chance and we can’t thank the staff enough.

He was in hospital isolated for 7 weeks and the staff kept him going through the chemo along with his partner Pat who travelled every day to see him and the rest of the family…
