The message from local farmers is that this tax will cripple the industry, threaten food security and harm our rural communities, undermining generations of hard work and stewardship.

Kemi Badenoch has been clear: the Conservatives oppose this tax and we would reverse it.

Much appreciation to Phil and Clare Wise for organizing such a well-run event, to Chris Brown for chairing and to the panellists for joining such an importance discussion. Disappointingly, no local Labour MPs accepted the invitation to speak, however I pay tribute to Cllr White for facing the tough questions…

❤️ New Men’s Mental Health Support Group to Launch in Thirsk

A vital lifeline for men’s mental health is coming to Thirsk in January 2025, as Andy’s Man Club (AMC) opens its doors in the town.

Andy’s Man Club is a UK-wide charity dedicated to su***de prevention and breaking the stigma around men’s mental health through free, peer-to-peer support groups. Their powerful message, , encourages men to open up about their struggles in a supportive, judgment-free environment.

Local residents Dave Manson and Ross McAndrew, who began attending an Andy’s Man Club in Ripon last year, have completed their training to become facilitators. With their experience and commitment, they will now lead AMC Thirsk, offering a safe space for men in the community…

🎄 Talking Thirsk with Chris Purser - Another Xmas Walk

We continued my family tradition of tamping down Christmas Day gastronomic excesses with an afternoon walk.

We were accompanied by a friend, who although she had lived around Thirsk for most of her life, had never walked on our green backyard, aka Sowerby Flatts.

The terminus of our peregrination was the Christmas tree, not the one in the Market Place, or by the Sowerby War Memorial, but the one that has grown up on Duckett's Ings, as a result of the “Johnny Appleseed” tree planting by Sowerby resident John Carrington, over a number of years…

🏃🏼‍♀️🏃 Thirsk and Sowerby Harriers

The year started, as it so often does, with a large gathering for the Captain Cook's Fell Race on New Year's Day, beginning from Great Ayton and taking in Captain Cook's Monument and Roseberry Topping before returning to the start.

392 completed the very competitive (for some) race, among them 32 Thirsk and Sowerby members for the first of the year's Club Championship races.

Josh Fothergill continued his superb form to finish 4th in 32.46 minutes, only 3 seconds behind the 3rd placed runner.

Tom Levi finished in 19th place in 35.45 with Joe Martlew 22nd in 36.09 and the consistent Paul Peacock 54th in 40.02…

🥳 Yorkshire Based Power Plastic Celebrates 50th Anniversary of Manufacturing

Established in Sussex in 1973 by David Price, Power Plastics started life as part of a larger business before transitioning to an independent company and relocating to Leeds, West Yorkshire. The business quickly made its mark as a leader in manufacturing swimming pool covers and liners.

🏃🏼‍♀️🏃 Thirsk & Sowerby Harriers

Forecast gales for Saturday put paid to several local park runs, including Fountains Abbey and Thorp Perrow.

However, the event at Dalby Forest went ahead, which is where Rob Burn chose to do his 100th park run, a milestone for any park runner.

Fallen trees had to be avoided but 162 stalwart runners managed to complete the course, with Rob coming 31st, 1st in his age group, in a very creditable time of 23.17 and Christine Burn was 122nd in 35.29.

Several who would normally have been at Fountains were at Millfield in a field of 245…

❤️ Thirsk & Sowerby Institute Charity Quiz Night

The Social committee from Thirsk and Sowerby Institute have been working hard this year supporting the Lambert Hospice, Thirsk Community Works and the Micro/ Junior Section of Thirsk Rugby Club.

They have held a series of topical quizzes in the function room which have not only raised the fantastic amount of £2,300 but provided fun and enjoyment for all those who attended.

On Friday 20th December there was a Christmas Quiz and it was the turn of the Micro/Junior section from Thirsk Rugby Club to be the beneficiaries, Rugby Club Chairman Geoff Iles was presented with a cheque for £700 at the end of the evening. The event was well supported with 21 teams taking part and £700 was raised to donate to the rugby club…

📍 Westerdale, a Village and Its History

When the winter lecture season commences it is a happy chance that the topic can also become a summer excursion, and indeed we very much look forward to an afternoon in Westerdale, the valley, learning more about it by walking the valley’s paths, in the days of next spring.

Mrs Carol Wilson has been most fortunate in having moved to this small village so as to take up her then new teaching post in a nearby town on the banks of the River Esk.
