Hi there ¡Tropica! Friends!
This Saturday will be our final night at Rise@Bluebird for 2024. For a number of reasons, Jono and I are taking a break from putting on events for the remainder of the year. So please join us this Saturday for our final fling, admission to DJ nights is, as usual, free and we'll be playing great global sounds from 7 – 11 in the delightful bar at Bluebird Bakery, Acomb.
We'll be back in 2025 with a series of events at Rise@Bluebird which, of course, we'll let you know about via our Facebook & Instagram pages, so watch out for those.
Until then I'll be travelling to Whitby to join ¡Tropica! DJs Sister Silver, Ms Fabulous and Mark Thompson for the weekend of the 25th October and the very lovely Festival!

Looking forward to the first ¡Tropica! Live! event this evening at Rise Bluebird in Acomb. If you've not visited yet, this venue - a bakery and café by day - is a lovely atmospheric space with a superb sound system - check it out!

Sat 1st July come join us as we celebrate our 3rd year of Picnic in The Park with our first ALL DAYER!

Raising funds for our good pals who’s volunteers do exceptional work year round from events and activities to maintenance and support - we have not 1 BUT 2 events for you to enjoy!!!

Pt. 1 at the Rowntree Park Amphitheatre is a PAYF family Friendly picnic where you can enjoy our residents and some local heroes (lineup soon to be revealed) spin in the sunshine ☀️☀️☀️Dancing encouraged and we will have the brilliant .i.t.a.mamasita giving a free salsa class - Sita runs regular classes and workshops in the park, give her a follow if you haven’t so far!!! And yes, we will be dancing into the evening everybody!

Pt. 2 takes us over the road to party into the night with a global soundtrack where we have secured the great and mighty to play b2b 8 till close. Exceptional Djs and great friends, Mark and Ali have been spreading their message of love, celebration and music across the UK and Europe for a long time indeed. Having lived in South America, Barcelona and Berlin, they literally live and breathe their sound. Home-grown Summer sounds you'll be proud to share with the neighbours:

The 2020s have opened up a rich seam of Jazz, Funk, Soul, Latin and Disco stars from artists based in the British Isles. Many come from the Leeds-Manchester conurbation, with its two Music Colleges of high renown turning out some seriously competent and innovative new artists. Here is part one of a two-parter reviewing some of the top tunes from these genres over the Covid Years, since the turn of the decade.

Thanks to legendary Leeds DJ Lubi for everything he does for the scene, I feel sure he's responsible for a lot of these talented artists getting more widely known. Power to you! 40 years and counting!
