AXEMORE THROWING CLUB HOSTS THE WORLD DOUBLE-BIT AXE THROWING CHAMPIONSHIP FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE UK

THIRSK, UK. August 19th, 2024 — For the first time in UK history, the World Double-Bit Axe Throwing Championships will be hosted by Axemore Throwing Club at Thirsk Racecourse from Friday, August 23 to Sunday, August 25, 2024. This unique, family-friendly event will see 208 competitors from 13 countries competing over three days in five categories, making it the biggest championship of its kind to date.
The World Double-Bit Axe Throwing Championships are held every two years and have previously taken place in Germany (2017), Sweden (2019), and Canada (2022, after being postponed from 2021 due to COVID-19). Double-bit axe throwing is a traditional form of the sport that has been practiced for over a century, involving the use of a full-length double-bitted axe thrown at targets positioned 20 feet away, with 5cm (2-inch) scoring rings.
"We are thrilled to bring this historic event to the UK for the first time," said Ian Radmore Founder of Axemore Throwing Club. "Not only will this be the largest championship ever held, but it also showcases the rich history of axe throwing as a sport. We’re excited to welcome athletes, families, and spectators to experience this incredible event."
Highlights of the 2024 Championship:
208 athletes from 13 countries will be competing, surpassing previous attendance numbers.
Vanaheim Vikings will offer a unique living history encampment featuring authentic Viking-age structures, crafts, cooking demonstrations, and live weapons displays, providing an immersive experience for attendees.
Hands-on activities such as tomahawk and double-bit axe throwing will be available for participants of all ages.
Bounce-Alot Inflatables will be on hand with several bouncy castles for children, ensuring fun for the whole family.
Local food and drink vendors will provide a wide range of delicious options, featuring independent businesses from the area.
The event builds on the rich tradition of axe throwing around the world. In 2019, 170 athletes from 14 nations competed in Hallefors, Sweden. In 2022, the competition moved to Nova Scotia, Canada, drawing 112 athletes from 10 countries and reaching over 500,000 viewers across 19 broadcasts on TSN. The 2024 competition promises to be even bigger and better, solidifying its place as one of the premier global events in the sport.

Dates: August 23 - 25, 2024
