As the school year begins, I've been asked by a lot of friends seeking guidance on WhatsApp for their children.
In Year 6, many primary schools witness a surge in students' phone usage, despite WhatsApp's minimum age requirement of 13. One common theme is the creation of class WhatsApp groups, which can lead to various issues such as:
- Being added to group chats without consent
- Feeling pressured to participate in discussions
- Oversharing personal information
It's essential to consider the digital world and the conversations children may be part of by allowing them access to WhatsApp. Talk to them regularly about using the platform responsibly, securely and mindfully. Assure them that they don't HAVE to be part of every discussion or respond to every message.
Go through the privacy settings to ensure they are configured to maximise their safety and to take the pressure off and have regular check through messages with your child to ensure all is well.
