Could you be Worcestershire’s next Young Poet Laureate?

Applications are NOW OPEN to find Worcestershire’s next Young Poet Laureate - and it could be you!

Worcestershire County Council’s Libraries and Public Health teams, in collaboration with Severn Arts, are looking for young writers aged 10 to 18 who are ready to unleash their creativity and speak out about the topics that matter most to them.

How to Enter

Young people living or studying in Worcestershire can participate by submitting a poem on the theme of ‘courage.’ Submissions will be judged across three age groups:

• School years 6–8
• School years 9–11
• School years 12–13

Finalists from each category will perform live at The Hive in Worcester, where a winner will be selected from each group. One of these winners will earn the prestigious title of Worcestershire’s Young Poet Laureate 2025.

The competition is jointly run by Worcestershire County Council Library Service and Severn Arts and funded by Public Health Worcestershire. It celebrates the county’s talented young poets, offering incredible opportunities.

Previous Young Poet Laureates have had their work published, performed live, been interviewed by local radio, and commissioned to write more poetry.

Worcestershire’s gritting teams are helping to keep our roads safe
Worcestershire County Council has been battling the elements, helping residents to stay safe and connected this week as temperatures plummeted. The county’s gritting team will be hard at work again tonight (10 January), maintaining 963 miles of primary routes and 432 miles of secondary routes, an impressive undertaking to keep Worcestershire moving.

Armed with a fleet of 36 gritting vehicles, including three brand-new vehicles for 2025, the crews were prepared and ready to respond to the latest cold snap. Each of the 27 primary routes are covered within 2.5 hours during nightly treatments, with secondary routes on standby for more severe conditions, such as prolonged cold snaps or impending snow.

The county’s salt barns are stocked with 16,750 tonnes of rock salt, with 220 tonnes used each time both primary and secondary routes are treated. This robust preparation ensures that no icy challenge goes unmet.

The council reminds all residents to drive cautiously during winter weather and to stay informed by checking local forecasts and travel updates. For more information on gritting routes and winter readiness, visit:
