The Eyo festival in Lagos Nigeria, also known as the Adimu Orisa Play, has been staged since the days of old and probably dates back much further than most Lagosians can ever imagine..

Eyo is a Yoruba festival unique to Lagos, Nigeria. In modern times, it is presented by the people of Lagos as a tourist event and due to its history, is traditionally performed on Lagos Island..

The word "Eyo" also refers to the costumed dancers, known as the masquerades that come out during the festival.

The origins of this observance are found in the inner workings of the secret societies of Lagos…Back in the day, the Eyo festival was held to es**rt the soul of a departed Lagos King or Chief and to usher in a new king.

It is widely believed that the play is one of the manifestations of the customary African revelry that serves as the forerunner of the modern carnival in Brazil.

On Eyo Day, the main highway in the heart of the city (from the end of Carter Bridge to Tinubu Square) is closed to traffic, allowing for procession from Idumota to the Iga Idunganran palace.

The white-clad Eyo masquerades represent the spirits of the dead, and are referred to in Yoruba as "agogoro Eyo" (literally: "tall Eyo")

Historically” Eyo “was claimed from Iperu OGUN state is the source, cradle and originator of Eyo in Nigeria and the world. There are 5 different branches/types of Iga Eyo in Iperu Akesan

Their are Names of the families and Iga of Eyo each represents are

Iga Pakerike which is symbolized by red cap of éyo
Iga Agbonmagbe, also symbolized by blue cap of éyo.
Iga éyo Odoru
Iga éyo Mogusen/Amororoo
Iga éyo Fibigbuwa

The major source of éyo in Iperu is the Iga éyo Pakeriké and other 4 are the Iperu Royal houses.

The White clothes they wear is called “Aropale”
The palm stick is called “Opambata”
The appearance of the Opambata is an important rite to be observed and commences a week before Eyo festival day..

Wole Soyinka at his residence in Ibadan, two weeks after he was released from the prison in 1969 ..

During the civil war in Nigeria, Soyinka appealed in an article for cease-fire. For this he was arrested in 1967, accused of conspiring with the Biafrans , and was held as a political prisoner for 22 months until 1969.

In 1965, Soyinka was arrested after taking over a radio station at gunpoint and broadcasting a message denouncing electoral fraud in Western Nigeria. His detention sparked international protests, and the next year he was acquitted on a technicality.

In 1966 there were two military coups and Nigeria appeared to be heading for a civil war after Colonel Odumegwu Ojukwu declared south-east Nigeria to be the independent Republic of Biafra. The following year Soyinka attempted to negotiate between the federal government and the Biafrans . This resulted in his arrest, accused of siding with the rebels.

In 1970 the civil war ended and Soyinka was released under an amnesty which followed. His experiences as a prisoner were chronicled in his book The Man Died: Prison Notes. After his release, he left Nigeria for six years before returning .

In 1983 he went into exile again. The following year, The Man Died: Prison Notes was banned in Nigeria.

In 1986 Soyinka was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature; the first African writer to win the prize. He returned to Nigeria once again and continued to write plays and essays; however, in 1994 yet again he was forced to flee Nigeria and go into exile.

In 1997 he was charged in absentia with treason by the regime of General Sani Abacha. These charges were lifted following Abacha’s death in 1998.

Soyinka continues to live and work in both Nigeria and the USA..
