Whilst nobody seems to be able to pinpoint it's age, the famed Crowhurst Yew is certainly OLD, and very definitely wonderful.

Measuring 11.5m in girth, it is said to be anywhere from 700 to 4000 years old. Realistically, it's somewhere in the middle.

It has a hollow section carved out of the trunk, and found there was a cannonball, said to have gotten there in a civil war skirmish!

Read about it in Country Life from 1939 here:

Thunderfield - a place where Thor resides.

Today our focus is on the beguilingly named Thunderfield, on the borders with Sussex. Named after the god of thunder, there are centuries of evidence that give the area an air of mystery and intrigue. I won't spoil it, as this article from 11th September 1987 issue of the Horley & Gatwick Mirror tells the story for itself:

The Silent Pool.

Outside Guildford, not far from Agatha Christie's old haunt at Newlands Corner, lies the Silent Pool, a body of water so clear and of such vivid colour that it's taken on an aura of mystery and intrigue.

The origin of it's spooky nature is said to have come about after a girl in the water was heard by a passing King John, who endeavoured to help her but sadly she drowned. Since then it's been said her spirit haunts the pool and maintains the unearthly clarity and stillness...

Have you been? Have you witnessed anything spooky?

Here is an article from the 13th April 1910 issue of Cycling:

A story as inspirational as it is eyebrow-raising. The Walton & Weybridge Informer coming to us with the story of a Mr Ron Mills, who runs a thriving and successful lawnmower repair and maintenance business. It all sounds innocuous enough until you realise he runs this slightly dangerous business despite being registered blind since birth!

A robot from Surrey!

The seminal Fritz Lang movie Metropolis caused a frenzy among late 1920s society, and robots and the future came to dominate public discourse across all kinds of channels.

Capt Richards from Gomshall was not immune and took things a level higher by building his own robot (which by the look of things was inspired by Karel Capek's earlier work Rossum's Universal Robots, from 1920)

It's not clear how actually functional it was, or whether it was all down to "trickery" but it nonetheless made a splash at the time, as this article from the 15th September 1928 issue of The Sphere highlights:

This morning we'll turn our minds to 1926, and the mysterious disappearance of celebrated novelist Agatha Christie. Living just outside Guildford, Mrs Christie left one morning, and vanished, her car and clothing being found abandoned near the Silent Pool.

Over the next few weeks, the mystery as to her whereabouts became a national sensation. Some newspaper clippings can be seen on this post, but to see the whole story, you can view the Collection by clicking this link (unlike most of my links, this one does require you to register to Findmypast to view the whole Collection. It's totally FREE to do so though)

Never mind Martians on Horsell Common, this evening we have a tale of freaky lights in the sky over Farnham from 1978

Police Officer Alan Craggs was called to reports of strange happenings at a local school, and upon arrival he observed the "dazzler" for 25 mins before, presumably, thinking about calling on other people to have a look...

What do you think? Is Farnham a hotbed of alien interest? Or were they just popping into Waitrose for some decent organic humous?

A very odd story from Caterham this evening.

On a cool spring evening, Mr Kemp of Frances Road was startled by a loud crashing noise from the grounds of the neighbouring hospital.

Upon investigation he was shocked to discover the wreckage of a crashed aircraft spread across the ground.

After summoning the emergency services and eventually returning home, you could imagine his consternation upon finding that whilst he was gone, ANOTHER aeroplane had been rude enough to crash into his back garden…
