🌿 Take a Moment to Breathe and Slow Down 🌿

Life can be overwhelming, and it's easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle. But remember, your mental health is just as important as your to-do list. Take a step back, breathe deeply, and give yourself permission to slow down. Prioritise self-care and find balance in the everyday chaos. Your well-being matters.

Prioritising our mental health is essential as it significantly impacts every aspect of our lives, from our physical health and relationships to our work and overall well-being.

When we focus on mental health, we equip ourselves to handle stress, overcome challenges, and maintain a positive outlook, which enhances our quality of life. Good mental health supports emotional resilience, helping us navigate life’s ups and downs more effectively.

By prioritising mental health, we not only improve our own lives but also contribute to the well-being of our communities, creating a more compassionate and supportive society.

WHO KNEW?

I have been very pleased to note the many tributes to the real Bluesbreaker himself, John Mayall, who died earlier this week.

Unknowingly he ignited in me the bug to speak in public. Firstly, when I was 16 I was asked to deliver a lecture to my fellow sixth formers. It was something we all really didn’t like doing but we had no choice. I decided my special subject was to be the importance of John Mayall within contemporary British music. I honestly cannot remember whether I had a slide projector and carousel and screen – probably not, but I did have a lot of LP covers and chalk and a blackboard. Basically, I assembled what became quite well known as a family tree.

John Mayall had a band called the Bluesbreakers from 1963 to 1969 and he was extremely gifted at spotting and nurturing talent, as I explained to my audience. Among others, they included. Peter Green, Mick Fleetwood and John McVie, who went on to form Fleetwood Mac.

Eric Clapton and Jack Bruce (Cream, Blind Faith, Derek and the Dominoes, etc)

Mick Taylor who joined the Rolling Stones

Andy Fraser of Free

Jeff Beck- no explanation needed.

I last saw him perform three years ago in Cadogan Hall in London and he was in his mid-80s. An extraordinary example of hard work, amazing knowledge of music, mixed with kindness and a good sense of humour.

Who knew that the seed of this lecture was to later germinate in working in the music business for over 30 years and giving talks to schools and companies on mental health.

If you have any interest in finding out much more, get hold of Eric Clapton’s moving Instagram tribute to him, made last week.

Prevention is always better than a cure.

Here are our top tips to help your mental wellbeing:

1. Participate in regular exercise- this causes your brain to release 'feel good' chemicals like endorphins and serotonin that help improve your mood.

2. Try journaling- it can be a healthy way of coping with everyday stress and challenges. Journaling helps clarify thoughts and regulate emotions.

3. Make sleep a priority- sleeping helps to repair and restore our brains, not just our bodies

4. Focus on the positives- studies have shown that this can improve sleep, mood and immunity. As well as decreasing depression, anxiety, difficulties with chronic pain and risk of disease!

5. Embrace nature- research shows that people with a strong connection with nature are typically happier in life, as nature can generate many happy emotions, including calmness, joy and creativity

6. Talk- talking can release pent-up feelings and emotions
