“Cut off from the mainland twice a day when high tide covers the strood, Mersea Island is a slice of Essex that few see. In its workaday fishing harbour, oyster shacks feel more Bretagne than British, and its most-photographed spot is the row of pastel-painted, gingerbread-trim beach huts brightening the sand-and-shingle beach.

Kate Frankl rents out two of them, Pastel Blue and Pastel Purple, both ridiculously pretty but saved from tweeness by her fresh, fashionable interiors, accessorised with quirky art and a notable absence of bunting.

She can also arrange paddleboarding lessons, seafood lunches (the island has an ovster-delivery bike) and afternoon tea, taken on the terrace beneath some très chic striped umbrellas.”
