Welwyn Festival is once more with us and WFRS will once again be showing some of its films from past years in the Civic Centre. On Wednesday 28th at 8pm your can relive some events from 1972, 1987 and 2002 and on Thursday 29th from 1978, 1993 and 2008 - you may even see yourself !
This will be the first showing of two of our digitally restored films of 1972 and 1987 - the improved quality makes then even more interesting. As a taster, some may remember when Welwyn very nearly lost its last High Street grocer in 1987............
Welwyn Festival is once more with us and has bought wonderful weather ! WFRS will once again be showing some of its past films - on Wednesday 28th and Thursday at 8 pm in the Civic Centre. Come along on Wednesday to see what our village was like in 1972, 1987 and 2002 - on Thursday we will be showing films from 1978, 1993 and 2008. You may even see yourself !
Our 1972 and 1987 films recently been restored and you can see 35 year plus scenes in much greater quality. As a taster can you remember when we very nearly lost our last High Street grocers......
Well it's official! Welwyn experienced it's highest ever temperature of 40C this afternoon, and it was not comfortable either.
Looking back over the last decade or so, at previous temperatures defined as 'records', it seems now that we just had no idea what was to come, and more worrying, what we will have to face in the next few years.
This film is a 6 minute extract from the Welwyn 2010 film that WFRS put together from bits and pieces we had, because there was very little to work with that year.
Knowing what we know now it makes for interesting, if rather worrying watching I feel, but worth watching all the same.
Let's have your comments.
Sants Sleight 2021
It was a wet, cold night but it was a treat to see Santa and his elves out to bring a little relief to the end of a gloomy year !!
Welwyn Winter Walk
The snow doesn't come to Welwyn very often and when it does it soon disappears, but it did come...........
Parakeets in Welwyn - Dec 2020
For a few weeks a small flock of ring-necked parakeets has been seen about the village. This morning I was surprised to see one eating from one of our bird-feeders.
Although we think of parrots as a bird of tropical climates this variety tends to live in colder areas, with its native habitat being the foothills of the Himalayas.
They were first spotted in the UK in Kent in 1971 and by the 1980s they had spread to London, where they form large and often noisy flocks.
Like so many none native species they attract conflicting thoughts as to whether their rapidly expanding numbers and concerns about their potential impact on native bird species are good or bad for our environment, with calls for a cull of ring-necked parakeets.
The RSPB is not in favour of a cull at this time, but believes it is important that the spread of the ring-necked parakeet is monitored and its potential for negative impacts on our native bird species assessed.
Meantime, as they settle in to Welwyn life we can enjoy the entertainment these colourful birds bring, as well as the undoubted generation of robust conversation from the often noisy human residents of Welwyn.
A Welwyn Walk - February 2020
February 2020 had a lot of drama I think you will agree.
'Storm Ciara', 'storm Harry & Meghan', 'storm Dennis', 'storm Boris's eye', 'storm Jorge' and 'storm 'Covid19'.
We now await the coming of 'storm no toilet-roll', and 'storm smart(?)motorway' in a few weeks time.
It's all happening here in 'little welwyn' and WFRS has managed to get out and about and has made this short film of how we stood up to it all.
If you have taken or intend to take footage of events that take place in our village, please send to WFRS as an mp4 file for us to see as it may be ideal for use in the annual film.
Welwyn Village Traffic, any evening of the week - 2019
Traffic issues in the village are becoming of increasing concern and this is a short 4min film as a small example of the traffic congestion through the High Street on any evening of the week. When junction 6 of the the A1m is blocked, it can be considerably worse than this. How much worse will it be in a few years time if the planned increase in housing goes ahead?
Redevelopment begins at Guessens House, Codicote Road, Welwyn
Here is a short film of the redevelopment work that has been taking place at Guessens House on the Codicote Road, Welwyn recently. We hope to be able to make further films as the work progresses.
If you take film footage of an event taking place in the parish, please consider sending it to WFRS so that we might include it in our next film.
The 1997 Welwyn Village Carnival.
Here is some 'lost' footage of the 1997 Welwyn Village Carnival, one of the best carnival processions through our village ever known.
So many things have changed since then. Welwyn Week (which used to be 'a week') was organised by the Round Table until Welwyn Festival Group was formed in 1999 and the annual Fete held at the hospital, then became a Family Fun Day held on Singlers Marsh.
The Clock Hotel has gone, Royton Express have left the area, and riding on the back of an open lorry is something few children experience now.
See how many faces you can remember and if you have footage of your own from this or any other event in the village WFRS would be very pleased to have it.
WFRS will have a pitch at the Family Fun Day this year to attract interest, we are a very small society that is getting smaller and really need fresh support, so please come to speak with us or make contact at any time.
Red Kites performing aerial acrobatics over Welwyn Village
This is a short clip of film footage taken of the Red Kites that can be seen performing their aerial acrobatics over Welwyn Village.
This and other footage will form part of the annual film, but WFRS members cannot be out and about to film every interesting event in the village and we need your help.
If you have taken footage of somethng that could be included in this years annual record film please upload it to this facebook account with a short description of when and what is being filmed.
We hope you enjoy these short clips, please like the page and share with your friends
Remembrance Day 11th November 2018
This is a short clip of film footage taken from the church tower last Sunday 11th November. This and other footage will form part of the annual film and a short film to go on the Church website. We had other WFRS members filming on the ground but if you have footage of this or any other event that we could consider for use in our annual film, please upload to this facebook account with a short description of when and what is being filmed.
