Si's Sounds Countdown to Christmas - that's it we made it, it's the big one, Merry Christmas Everyone, for the main day I have selected this one for you, I finish a lot of my Christmas parties with this one too and it goes down a treat, and so for the final time this year, I give you Mariah Carey - All I want For Christmas is You - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aAkMkVFwAoo

Fun Facts about this one:
Though it was first released in 1994, “All I Want for Christmas Is You” didn’t reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100 until 2017, when a combination of streaming and the g**s having taste meant it finally got its dues.

Since then, it’s topped the charts in 2019, 2020 and 2021. Truly, the gift that keeps giving.

In the ultimate act of homophobia, boyband East 17 actually kept Mariah from the fabled glory spot with their song “Stay Another Day”.

It seemed that their white furry puffer jackets matched with attempts at goatees proved irresistible to the UK.

Global sales of the song have reached 16 million and it remains not only her biggest international success but the best selling Christmas single by a female artist overall.

Si's Sounds Countdown to Christmas - Christmas Eve - Paul McCartney - Wonderful Christmas Time - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94Ye-3C1FC8

"Wonderful Christmastime" was recorded during the sessions for the McCartney II album, where Paul once again retreated to his farm and laid down all the tracks himself. This time he was experimenting with the new electropop movement, which explains the weird boinging sound throughout the song. This sound was created by an early synthesizer called a Sequential Circuits Prophet-5, which was also used on Kim Carnes' "Bette Davis Eyes" and the Doobie Brothers' "What a Fool Believes."
The Beatles never had an official Christmas release, although they distributed "Christmas Time Is Here Again" to their fan club in 1967. As solo artists, however, all four members released Christmas songs. This one and John Lennon's "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" have endured and continue to get airplay in the holiday season. Note that Lennon's Christmas classic doubles as an anti-war song, while McCartney is simply having a wonderful Christmastime. It was often that way in The Beatles, too, where McCartney tended to write more upbeat songs like "I've Just Seen a Face" and Lennon would get political on songs like "Revolution."
Paul McCartney was winding down his band Wings when he released this song at the end of 1979. Their last studio album, Back To The Egg, was issued that summer.

Wings' last tour was in November and December 1979, so they included "Wonderful Christmastime" in the set, with some fake snowfall as they played it. McCartney moved forward as a solo artist, landing a big hit in "Coming Up" and a huge hit in 1982 with his Stevie Wonder duet "Ebony and Ivory."
Although the members of Wings don't appear on the song (McCartney did all the vocals and played all the instruments), they do appear in the song's music video, which was filmed at the Fountain Inn in Ashurst, West Sussex. McCartney recalled to NME in 2012: "We went out to some pub somewhere, and so that was a laugh... we just run out of the pub occasionally, filmed a bit, and then went back into the pub. So that was quite a nice evening!"

Si's Sounds Countdown to Christmas - December the 23rd - Queen, Thank God It's Christmas: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zu7r5Xsg6dc

Fun Facts about this one:
"Thank God It's Christmas" was mainly written by Queen drummer Roger Taylor. However, when he found himself struggling to come up with a chorus he asked the band's lead guitarist, Brian May, to help him out.

When the pair finished the tune they presented it to Freddie Mercury. It was the vocalist's ability to pull back for that song which Brian May remembers. He told Ultimate Classic Rock: "(Freddie) loved it and did a beautiful vocal. I think it's just the most understated vocal, and I love it, you know."
The song was released on November 27, 1984 and spent six weeks in the UK charts over Christmas 1984 and the New Year of 1985, peaking at #21. Queen were big in the mid-1980s in their home country, so the song's relative lack of success is surprising. May believes this is because they didn't film a promotional video for their festive tune. He said: "The funny thing is, it doesn't get that much attention in Britain as a Christmas single, because it doesn't have a video. Everything's about video these days and we never made a video for that song. It's all in your mind. But I'm very fond of it. I think it's a very different kind of Christmas song."

Si's Sounds Christmas Countdown, representing the 22nd of December we have this classic: Santa Tell Me - Ariana Grande - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nlR0MkrRklg

Fun Facts about this one:
This self-penned holiday single finds Ariana Grande singing of feeling let down by Santa as he didn't grant her Christmas wish. She said during a live stream Q&A with Arianators the song is, "sort of about being fed up with Santa because he doesn't necessarily pull through all the time."
This was Ariana's second holiday release following her 2013 Christmas Kisses EP. That record contained two original songs: "Love Is Everything" and "Snow In California" as well as a couple of covers.
Ariana performed the song for the first time on November 18, 2014 at the A Very Grammy Christmas concert in the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.
Seven years after releasing the song, Grande joined Kelly Clarkson to deliver a holiday tune with a similar theme. "Santa, Can't You Hear Me" finds the two singers telling Santa to forget all the Christmas festivities. What they want from Saint Nick is to make their dreams come true and send them a lover.
The Alfredo Flores and Jones Crow-directed video is a cheery low-budget clip filled with Grande dancing with her friends, laughing and giving gifts. But the original vision was far more... unconventional.

Si's Sounds Countdown to Christmas, what am I like, sorry I have been very laxed with this, apologies to anyone that was enjoying our countdown, anyway I am gonna make up with a few selections in a few posts ahead of Chrstmas day tomorrow:

So representing December the 21st we have: The Waitresses and Christmas Wrapping https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nud2TQNahaU

Fun Facts about this one:
In 1981, this song was released as a single and appeared on the compilation A Christmas Record, which featured Christmas songs by various ZE Records artists, including Was (Not Was) and Davitt Sigerson.

The song got some airplay in America, and another version of the compilation was released the following year. Over the next few years, however, the song died out in America. The turnaround came in 1987 when the A Very Special Christmas album was released, opening the market for edgy Christmas songs by contemporary artists. As radio programmers filled their holiday playlists with tracks from the album like "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" by John Mellencamp and "Christmas in Hollis" by Run-D.M.C., they looked for other songs with a similar feel, and plugged in "Christmas Wrapping." The song gradually found an audience and has remained a staple of many Christmas playlists ever since.
When Chris Butler wrote this song, he was not feeling very festive. The Waitresses were signed to ZE Records, whose boss, Michael Zilkha, asked the bands on his roster to each come up with a Christmas song that would go on a holiday compilation issued by the label. The Waitresses were in the middle of a grueling tour, and weren't happy about the task, especially since it was July and they weren't exactly in the Christmas spirit.

Butler was a notorious Scrooge, so this was a particularly daunting task. He banged out the song very quickly, writing the last of the lyrics in a taxi from his apartment in New York to Electric Lady Studios, where they recorded it. The end result was a very uplifting Christmas song with a happy ending.

"I think my subconscious wanted something to cure me of my Grinch-hood, to fabricate this story where I'm in touch with some kind of force in the background that is working for good," he told Songfacts. "It does kind of work out sometimes like this. And it's what people want. A lot of songwriting for me was fulfilling fantasies of how I wish the world was. I wish the world was a certain way, and I wish that there really was something wonderful in the background working, especially around that time, that made everything turn out okay."
