Fantastic to once again see the UK VW community in such good stead!

Five reasons to attend Midlands Air-cooled Swapmeet this weekend, 2nd February 2025 -

1. It’s in the Midlands at the British Motor Museum! What a venue! it’s clean, warm and has an on site cafe and once you're done trawling though classic parts why not go take a look around the exhibitions (make sure to book your tickets in advance from the venue’s website).

2. It's run by real enthusiasts for enthusiasts; a lot of thought and planning goes in to getting the right traders in so you can find exactly what you’ve been looking for. They also have strictly no car boot garbage or VW tat policy.

3. Some of the best air-cooled cars in the UK are sure to be in attendance with 1000 parking spaces available, it will create a perfect opportunity to see what’s on show.

4. It's only a £6 entrance fee! Yes, £6… You can’t pay for a pint with that these days. We see this as true testament to the event being put on for the community rather than a money spinner.

5. The event is run by Steve Parsons and he really is one of the good guys - just take look at the show sponsor list and you’ll see how much the core of the VW community are keen to help support what he’s doing.

Hope to see you all there, make sure you come over and say hello.

Peter Keetman was a freelance commercial photographer and one of the major trendsetters of modern photography of his time. He was renowned for creating the photographic group "fotoform" which caused quite a sensation in the early 1950s Germany.

Keetman walked through the factory gate at the plant in Wolfsburg in April 1953 and it was already the largest automobile factory in Europe. In those days production was booming with well over 700 Beetles and Type2’s leaving daily. Keetman was left to his own devices by the plant manager and spent a full week walking around the massive plant shooting every aspect of Volkswagen production in an artistic manner.

Keen to promote industrial photography, Keetman had offered the rights to Volkswagen for the photographs but unfortunately they were not used as they didn’t suite VW’s brochure advertising style. This is not to say the shots were not a big hit with the photographic world; having published in a large number of books, magazines and shown at exhibitions across the world. In the late 1990’s Volkswagen came round and put on a free exhibition of Peter’s work saying that “The series from the Volkswagen factory in 1953 is an equally important photographic artwork as a valuable document for the history of Volkswagen in the economic miracle years.”

Peter’s work didn’t end with Wolfsberg and he went on to have a long career photographing all manner of subjects until his death in his Upper Bavarian homeland Marquartstein on 8 March of 2005.

Look out for his book “Volkswagen: A Week At The Factory” it has been available through many publishers over the years. It really is the perfect coffee table book for the VW enthusiast. Go and hunt a copy down, you won’t be disappointed.

Our friend, Chris De La Marsche, was on a trip to Sweden and couldn’t resist a visit to the Båstnäs Car Cemetery. This is a private collection on private land, but the owners are ok with people having a wander, kind of …

“This car cemetery is private property. You may still look, take pictures but DO NOT take away parts. Do not destroy or in any other way disrupt this place. If you open a car door, please shut it again so the next visitor can get the same experience as you did!! For info: after about 30 burglaries this year I’m fed up with it! I’ve made traps in the buildings so if you get hurt or die, I DON’T CARE! Remember in this place no one can hear you scream …” –Actual note from the owner pinned to a building near the cars!

The Car Cemetery was initially started as a scrapyard in the 1950s by two brothers who ran their parts business from a building next to where these pictures were taken. The cars in the collection range from the 40s, 50s and 60s, with various makes and models that the brothers would break and sell the parts from. The business closed its doors in the early 90s and then the Swedish forest started to claim the cars. One of the brothers remains, and as you can see from his note, he doesn’t mind visitors but asks that his property is respected. I could waffle on all day about the contents of this place, but I’ll let the pictures do the talking.

Binz.

By August 1952, VW’s all new ‘Pick-Up’ (Single Cab) had been unveiled, like the other models the new Pick-Up was a great success but could only seat 2 or 3 people at a push.

To begin with Volkswagen didn’t build their Crew-Cab trucks, they would just supply their German dealership network Single Cabs with an SO-16 / A-16 code, which means ’special order vehicle’, so upon order, the dealership would send the vehicle to a company called Binz GmbH & Co. KG. (founded in 1936) who were well known for manufacturing fire engines, ambulances, police cars, vehicles for the disabled and funeral vehicles for Mercedes-Benz.

They were delivered to Binz wearing just factory primer. The bus would already be fitted with belly pans for strength the same as a Samba or Double-door Panel-Van. They would then proceed to hack back off the cab and extend by 850mm using their own panel which they would just overlap and lead load. A new bulkhead was formed in between the front seat and back area baring a plaque reading “Binz Karosserie” followed by 3653- then the production number. The access to this rear area would be through a new door aperture with a backwards hinged ’Suicide’ door, using slightly modified regular split bus door hinges and a wide window special ordered by Sekurit. The drop gates were cut and shortened to allow the extra-large cab and load bed was removed from the new cab area, losing the threaded holes which attach the front hoops to the bed. Binz didn’t re-make these items, they just flattened the two outer ribs to make room a hoop to be attached. The fully removable rear seat would cost you extra and was similar to a normal Type’2 Microbus middle seat with special Binz hardware to attach it to the floor. Most Binz Crew-Cab’s were painted Dove blue.

The Binz Crew-Cab wasn’t a huge success when you compare it to other VW models, with a much argued number of around 600 sold (mostly sold in 1958) with orders ending in February 1959. It is rumoured you could bring your own personal single cab to Binz in person to have it converted which would explain the ‘Binz Barndoor’ photos but we can’t find any solid documentation to back up the theory, it could however skew the estimated build numbers a little.

The reasons for the poor sale figures were a combination of a substandard advertising campaign by VW and the dealerships, a long waiting period after you’d place your order, and at the time a reputation for very poor build quality with complaints about badly masked flaking paint. There were also complaints about premature corrosion on the new Binz panels around seams and cracking where large amounts of lead were use on joints. You might go as far as saying that the Binz Crew-Cab cab, after being approved by official Volkswagen, ended up being the most ignored… That is, until the end of the 50’s came along and the new improved quality official VW Crew-Cabs started rolling off the VW production line at Hannover.

The Binz-built VWs have never been more rare, valuable and sort after.

We wish you all the luck in the world in finding one.

What a bus this is - it has been fine-tooth-comb restored very recently and rebuilt to the highest of specs. The paint job on this one is just amazing! We thought we’d have a little fun with it and make it a German post bus tribute. But fear not, they are just vinyl stickers so if they aren’t your bag, they can be removed very easily. It doesn’t just look good either, it had a full mechanical overhaul too and drives perfectly. We just picked it up from 120 miles away in the cold and snow and it was a pleasure to drive home. The back is all fully ply lined with good thick plywood and is a blank canvas ready to go. Also there’s a full MOT on it for peace of mind.

By now you probably know how we do things but if you are new here, we do a bunch of other smaller prizes that we hand select and think that you will love, and of course this time is no exception. We have a VIP Ninove trip for two, a solar charge system, a Sealey roller cab and more. Also this time there is £500 in website credit up for grabs too!

So get yourself over to Hayburner Competitions now!

Good luck. https://hayburnercompetitions.co.uk
