***SOLD***

The March 1951 ‘Kempes’ Type’2 ‘no rear window’ Barndoor.

For most Vintage VW enthusiasts, this is a vehicle that doesn't really require any introduction. For those of you who don’t know this bus, it is one of the earliest examples of the Volkswagen Type2 in the world, rescued from a Swedish forest over a decade ago by Mark Spicer from Type29 Restorations. This was one of the first builds of this kind and its notorious history is well documented.

All those years ago this bus required very little welding leaving a considerable amount of original metal, paint and sign writing compared to your average 'flat pack' pre'55 bus build we see today.

Notice the solid rear window unique to pre April ’51 Type2's, this vehicle left Wolfsburg as a panel van and was professionally converted by a coach builder early on its life.

The bus is currently running a freshly built 1600tp engine (still under warranty) and fully rebuilt 1500 straight axle with a longer 4th gear perfect for motorway cruising. Disc brakes up front with remote servo so this bus stops on a dime. Lowered all round with original SA SprintStars.

If lowered isn’t your thing you will be glad to hear that period correct running gear, gearbox, wheels and a 30hp motor come along with the sale. If the asking price is met the bus can be put completely back to stock before it changes hands.

The bus has a colourful history and has had extensive features in Hayburner, Volksworld and theSamba.

Shipping worldwide can be arranged.

Now is the rare opportunity to own a rare piece of Volkswagen history.

Offers around £75,000

It’s our last day at Hayburner HQ before we close up for the Christmas period.

I just wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone who has subscribed to the magazine, advertised, supported, contributed, put a sticker on their car or represented by wearing a T-shirt over the past year.

Also to everyone who got involved with our Christmas Ghia competition which has resulted in a big donation all ready to send over to Cancer Research. I’m personally very proud Hayburner, as a company, is in a position to be able to achieve this but we couldn't have done it without you so I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

So big love to you all and on behalf of everyone here at Hayburner Magazine I’d like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas!

I’ll leave you with a few of my personal favourite festive Volkswagen photos I’ve collected over the years.

Enjoy.

Halfway through 1938 the prototype had finally reached the form it would take for the next 50 or so years.

A batch of 30 W38 pre-production models were built at the new Porsche plant in Zuffenhausen using bodies supplied by Reutter.

Some of these 30 cars were fitted with the unique 'roll back roof' you see in these photos, unfortunately we don’t know exactly how many were made with this feature or exactly why it wasn't continued on production models (please enlighten us if you know)

On July 1938 the New York Times published an article regarding the ‘Peoples Car’ using photos of the W38 and ironically described it as the ‘Beetle’. This was the first time in history the car was publicly given this name even if it wasn't official.

These cars were designated for publicity use for the KDF Wagen saving scheme. But that is another story all together.

This morning we were sent a brilliant quality version (click/zoom on the image) of a photograph that has to be one of the best air-cooled Porsche/VW shots of all time, the busy street scene taken at a Porsche 356 meet in L**htal Strasse, L**h, Austria.

The other legendary photograph of the skier jumping the 356 that many will already know. We have on good authority that it was also taken in L**h, Austria at the same time.

Looking at the first photo in the office we date it to around 1963 But would love to know more information regarding this event, with such a turn out there must be more surviving images out there, it would be great to know/see more about it.

Porsche's technical team developed various concepts for the first prototypes, all air-cooled: a twin cylinder, twin piston two-stroke, a horizontally opposed two-stroke, a similar four-stoke unit and then the final 'flat four' four stroke motor.

None of the of the earlier designs made the cut. The power output from the four-stroke flat twin was too low and the twin-piston two-stroke was too unreliable. Although Ferdinand favoured the twin motors (mainly for cost reasons) the testing showed that the flat four won in every way.

The team were known to mockingly call it the 'Rolls-Royce' option because of it's extra expense.

1. D60 prototype Sept 1935 2 cylinder.
2. A60 first prototype double piston 2 cylinder.
3. C60 prototype 2 cylinder.
4. The flat 4 style we all know and love as tested in the V3 prototype.

The EA489 ‘Basistransporter’

A weird one, probably the most basic and aesthetically displeasing vehicle Volkswagen ever brought to the market.

Similar to a Tempo Matador they were built using primitive ladder chassis with torsion bar front suspension and a leaf-sprung rear beam axle. The 1584cc flat-four engine was mounted under the cab putting out 44-50bhp with a 55mph top speed. No curves at all, even the wheel arches were straight-edged, while all the glass was completely flat. The Basistransporter was a pick-up, but different bodies could be fitted, including vans, minibuses, campers and ambulances.

Volkswagen’s Hannover plant was responsible for turning out EA489s from 1975, alongside their more sophisticated Type2. Around 2600 appeared up until 1979, although most were in kit form; few were actually built in their entirety in Germany.

First exports were to Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Pakistan, Indonesia, Turkey and Mexico, mainly for evaluation. Around 200 went to Africa, sent there by Finland as part of foreign aid packages. After trials there was little interest from Australia and NZ However, the Philippines, Turkey, Indonesia, Mexico and Pakistan were more keen using local names such as ‘Mitra’ for Indonesia, Trakbayan for the Phillipines and just EA489 in Turkey.

Turkey and Indonesia used the front of a bay window Type 2 as a cab and added a small grille to the nose to sit on the EA489 Chassis.

It was Mexico that really embraced the Basistransporter. It even put together its own complete versions, with Mexican-built chassis rather than Hannover’s kit one, and made about 3600 vehicles up until 1979.

Anyone own one? We’d love to hear from you.

***50% OF ALL PROFITS MADE FROM THIS KARMANN GHIA WILL BE GOING TO CANCER RESEARCH!***

Yes you did read that right, being the season of good will we have made the decision to stick with the Hayburner ethos and donate half of our profits for this car to a charity that’s close to our hearts.

So… we went pretty big last Christmas and we wanted to the same again this year. We are back with one last competition of the year and with this absolutely gem of a Karmann Ghia. It's a 1964 California import and has been well kept and pampered over the years, even treated to a new body shell so this car is 100% solid as a rock and the list of new parts it has had over the last year is as long as your arm.

A bit about The Giving Ghia - sitting on a 6” Eva Resto fully adjustable beam with dropped spindles and adjustable spring plates, tucking those wide 5 staggered steels with brand new tyres in beautifully. But this car isn't all stance, it has great paint and an interior to match. Head over to the main site for the full run down of this great car. This time around because of the Christmas break we have a much shorter competition length too, so don't miss out!

By now you probably know how we do things but if you are new here, we do a bunch of other smaller prizes that we hand select and think that you will love, and of course this time is no exception. We have a vintage speed style steering wheel, a brand new set of wheels or £500, a Bug-Tech shifter and more. Also this time there is £500 in website credit up for grabs too! So get yourself over to Hayburner Competitions now!

This competition ends on Sunday the 22nd of December at 12pm Midday and will be drawn live from our socials at 1pm that very same afternoon. Don’t miss your chance of this awesome car and to do some good at the same time!

Good Luck!
