This was a South African festival I played called with a band called City Bowl Mizers, who were the reason I ended up in London. The festival is still going strong and is SA’s longest running one I believe.
Anyway, this video is like a time capsule as it was taken when phone cameras weren’t such a thing. This band was always about fun and were always a ball of energy onstage. I don’t think I’ve played with a bunch of dudes so able to effortlessly start a party anywhere and make every gig an occasion. They brought out a lot of that in me and I miss it! This is now 15 years ago but the second song in particular still sounds great now. Reunion?

‘Muscular Sunset’ - first band run-through.

Damn! First time writing music with these guys in 8 years! Plenty of rough edges to knock off but it felt goood to be creating and collaborating with people close to me. I’ve been in so many bands lately where I’ve been learning sets and pre written songs, and I’ve missed being able to just come up with stuff in the band room, play it badly, overplay and then find that place where it all clicks and you remember why you’re doing the thing. Love you guys

RETRO ROCK DRUMMING

Cutting some drums for a regular client last year. I sort of went for a “chilled out” Taylor Hawkins approach here - quite a lot of fills and energy but not too bombastic, to match the guitar vibes. Loved doing this one.

recording this last song for the late great Kevin Ingles of in 2021. I absolutely loved Kev’s playing and ideas, he always wanted it to sound massive and heavy. RIP buddy, you were a lovely and brilliant man and musician, to say the least .
It’s also mad how my recording, mixing and playing have evolved in a year or so. I appreciate the f**k out of everyone who’s given me stuff to record that’s allowed me to grow.

I think this is the first musician death I’ve actually shed tears over. I spent countless hours shaping my playing to all of Taylor’s work, and much of what I do is directly stolen from him. At a time when I was feeling incredibly unsure about how to develop my drumming, listening to and watching him gave me enormous inspiration and actually pulled me out of a hole early on in my musical journey. The spirit and creativity he brought to rock drumming was bold and unique, but accessible enough for less experienced drummers to tap into. That’s what always got me with him. I always badly wanted to meet him, and am thankful I got to see him play several times. Rest in peace dude, this is not an easy one to swallow.
