The Beauty of Church Bells and Towers - Flight Across Cheshire.

Welcome to my latest new feature entitled 'The Beauty of Church Bells and Towers'. In this film join me as I fly around a hand picked selection of ancient Cheshire churches filming from the air showing these buildings in their natural landscapes. I also visit and climb two bell towers to take a look at the bronze bells that have hung in each tower for many hundreds of years. Church bells are rarely seen by visitors or the public and to be able to give you the chance to see them in their natural working environment is something special.

As well as visiting the bell towers join me as I fly you to other Cheshire churches to see these magnificent buildings from a different perspective in a relaxing six minute flight across Cheshire.

All the churches featured here today also have their own individual full episode available giving an in-depth history of each church. These are available in our Rambles through History and History Walks playlists on Tvpresenter4history.

Since being a teenager I have had a great interest in British history, but in particular the historical buildings that still stand today from past centuries.

In 2007 YouTube was starting to spark into life and I saw an opening and a platform where I could finally start to share my historical research in the form of short films with other people who had a similar interest in the history that surrounded them. For the next twelve years I continued to write and present history features to a growing online audience covering many historical subjects but still I felt that I could do so much more.

It was in March 2020 when I was privileged to become the history columnist for Cheshire Life magazine allowing me to share further with the public the historical importance and significance of the churches across Cheshire and beyond and of course telling the stories of these wonderful historical buildings.

What I find extremely encouraging is that I am now working with each church that I feature to bring the history of the building to life. I actively encourage every church that I feature to use my films freely as they wish to generate more interest from visitors and to encourage the public to visit and see the history for themselves. Now for 2022 I'm busy writing and creating 25 brand new episodes, visiting and telling the history of more churches.

In 1277 Edward I oversaw the construction of a new castle to be built in Ruddlan and around the 22nd August 1277 Edward moved his headquarters to Rhuddlan itself.

Churches hold a fascination for many people and in particular its our ancient churches that are full of history and stories from the past, many of these stories are recorded in historical documents as well as the church registers from the 15th and 16th centuries onwards. Our churches were and still are the centre of our communities and I'm very privileged to be able to visit so many of these ancient churches and to tell their stories and reveal hidden histories that many of us rarely get to see for ourselves.

I'm also very lucky to be able to do this on a full time basis as part of my ongoing work to build a future archive of our ancient churches across Cheshire and beyond. My work is highlighted and featured on the National Churches Trust website and I am also a with my own page dedicated to my work on their site.

Here now is a feature giving you a flavour of what I am doing as I film and record churches for generations to look back upon in the future.

Robert Holgate was born in 1481. Following a long and distinguished career at Cambridge University Robert went on to become Bishop of Llandaff in Wales on 25th March 1537. In the year of 1545 he was to be made Archbishop of York where he remained in post until 1554 before being imprisoned in the tower by Queen Mary I and stripped of his post for breaking his vow of celibacy.
Robert was to pay the crown £1000 for his crimes and was duly released in January 1555, however he sadly died on 15th November 1555. In his last will and testament he bequeathed money and founded a hospital and Almshouses in Hemsworth to be built and maintained for the future.
In the late 17th century it became commonplace for residents of the almshouses to wear a silver almshouse badge upon the sleeve of their clothing. Now see for yourself an extremely rare surviving silver almshouse badge dated to 1687 from the hospital founded by Archbishop Robert Holgate back in the year of 1555 AD that I discovered recently.

Mick Aston's View on Monasteries.. An interview with Tim........

Yesterday I mentioned as to why I make so many history films about our ancient churches and how I was influenced by Mick Aston's take on the ancient churches that drove me to start writing and presenting my own history features on our churches...
Well I also take the opportunity to film at some of our ancient monasteries when the chance comes along as I also find these extremely fascinating !!
Here for you now is another interview by Tim with Mick Aston giving his take on the monasteries and their importance in the landscape and enriching us with his knowledge on the subject........ This was filmed lay on the spoil heap at the filming of an epusode of Time Team.. Watch it here via Time Team Official...

A Question I am Often Asked about my history films ....

Why Do I feature so many Churches in the Landscape in my history films ??

MY ANSWER:
My Inspiration comes from the much loved and missed Professor Mick Aston.......❤
Following my Time Team episode In 2007 I launched my youtube channel presenting and producing general history films.
But it was in 2012 that I watched a wonderful interview with Mick Aston and Tim where Mick gave his spin as to why our churches are so historically important !!
This was the inspiration that led me to where I am today making many history films and features about our ancient churches across Cheshire and beyond. With my back catalogue of over 50 churches now featured and many more in the pipeline my work continues as I write and present many more history features about our churches. I wish that I could thank Mick personally for giving me the inspiration to do what I now do for a living but I know that's not possible. What I can do is continue to make more films in the knowledge that I think Mick would have approved of what I'm recording about our churches for the future.
Here is the wonderful interview of Mick talking about our churches ... ❤

BRAND NEW RELEASE - EPISODE 17 - RAMBLES THROUGH HISTORY
................... St Michael & the Normans - Shotwick ....................

Deep in the heart of Cheshire in the village of Shotwick close to the Welsh border stands the ancient Norman church of St Michael. Mentioned in the Domesday book of 1086 AD this church has served the community for over a thousand years. Standing on what was once an important crossing point of the river Dee the church has seen kings cross the ancient ford on their way to Ireland and into Wales. Today the ford no longer exists due to the river being diverted way back in the early 18th century.

Join me as I take you to Shotwick to see for yourself the ancient church of St Michael as I explain the history of this wonderful place. Join me also as I take you on a virtual tour inside this ancient place of worship.
