RECOLLECTION BOX
If you visit the Fruits de Mer Records site, you'll see a new section - 'Recollection Box' - do take a look as my old mate Nick Leese from Heyday Mail Order is going to write a monthly blog or two about music he's heard, artists he's seen and the like, in a lifetime in music; he's started off with a look back at Nick Drake, some American bands that mean a lot to him, including Plasticland and Green on Red, and a selection of classic psych tracks - well worth a read.

If you went to the Dr Sardonicus festival in South Wales in August you would have received a Goody bag of discs and on this weeks show you can hear a track each from The Telephones,Octopus Syng, The Lemon Clocks and Todd Dillingham Fruits de Mer Records
The Mysterious Tommy Histon gets a couple of tracks played from an acetate long thought lost. There is the latest from Bobbie Dazzle Rise Above Records
No one guessed the link between the tracks I played last week so I’ve added another track this week in the hope that someone guesses what links them all
There are the usual ads as well for all the things you never knew you could live without

Fruits de Mer's plans for global domination take another step forward with three more shops signed up and maybe a couple more to follow. Thank you to everyone for your suggestions and thanks to the shops that have signed up (and to those that have been back in touch to explain why it doesn't work for them).

Still on the look out for two or three more independent record shops in the UK to join Fruits de Mer's merry band - if you have any suggestions, please give me details - but they really do need to be independent shops and they must stock a range of new releases AND be into psychedelia and progressive rock! (shops that only sell second-hand vinyl or chart albums aren't going to be interested)

An Introduction to
rock psychédélique - 74:21 - Angleterre 2024

Cette rétrospective, proposée par le label britannique spécialisé en musiques acides, est l’occasion de fouiner dans la discographie du collectif The Honey Pot, qui publie, depuis 2013, un chapelet de chansons délicatement psychédéliques et savoureusement anglaises, échantillonnées ici sur un CD publié au crépuscule de la vie des compact discs – logique puisque Fruits de Mer Records naît, en 2008, de l’envie d’éditer des vinyles, moment où les économistes et financiers de la City, de La Défense et de Wall Street (enfin, ceux qui connaissent l’existence de la musique) déclarent le support… formellement décédé. Des reprises (une vision de «Sympathy» de Rare Bird, dont Crystal Jacqueline – Jacqueline Bourne – tente le premier couplet a ca****la, la version dépouillée – enfin, dans un premier temps – et dramatique de «White Rabbit» de Jefferson Airplane, l’exhumation du titre, évocateur, «Rainy Day Mushroom Pillow» du premier LP, sorti en 1967, du groupe de Los Angeles The Strawberry Alarm Clock) ou des compositions originales, le plus souvent de la plume du guitariste d’Icarus Peel, comme l’envoûtant «Sweet Orange Sunshine» ou «Games For May», qui débute en référence doucereuse à Jimi Hendrix, autant de morceaux qui replongent dans un temps plus insouciant.

Friends Of The Fish / Fruits de Mer Records. Einsteinium is a highly unstable element that was discovered in the debris after the first hydrogen bomb explosion. Using it in the title eventually compelled Curvey from Custard Flux to research and write about characters and events relating to atomic bombs, a thoroughly depressing subject. The infamous key scientist involved in developing the first atom bomb, had deep spiritual interests and in some interviews had made references to the Bhagavad Gita, which he was able to use for more positive, psychedelic inspiration.

Sa première cassette publiée date de 1985 et, depuis, Anton Barbeau, multi-instrumentiste américain né à Sacramento (Californie) et aujourd’hui basé à Berlin (après avoir hanté des villes anglaises et européennes), multiplie les albums – et les mélodies, accessibles, appuyées sur des textes explorant volontiers les confins de la réalité. Né quelques semaines avant le Summer Of Love, son écriture se nourrit de cet héritage, mais encore plus de la tradition psychédélique anglaise (on pense à Syd Barrett ou Robyn Hitchcock – à qui il prend «Sometimes I Wish I Was A Pretty Girl») –, dont il fait (partiellement) sienne la modernisation post-punk apportée par des musiciens comme Andy Partridge, d’XTC ou Julian Cope, de Teardrop Explodes – à celui-ci il emprunte l’excellent «Out Of My Mind On Speed And Dope»). «An Introduction to» est une autre des rétrospectives initiées par Fruits de Mer Records – au nom si francophile qu’il ne peut être que britannique: outre les compositions propres (le chaloupé «When I Was 64 (In The Year 13)», le mystérieux «Berlin School Of Doubt» ou l’enfumé «Cellar Bar»), le disque fait la part belle aux covers, dont celles de deux morceaux emblématiques de David Bowie, le dépouillé «Ziggy Stardust» et le sombre «Scary Monsters (Super Creeps)».
