This unit feels like an all-in-one solution for quickly capturing something creative. The ability to interface directly with my computer over usb, dial in the analogue EQ and track vocals & DI’s quickly - whilst monitoring via the onboard outputs - means I only need a laptop, headphones and this to get those ideas down, fast. I found myself using this as a live mic pre, EQ-ing my in ears for myself & sending the FOH a pre-EQ insert send, so they can dial it in every night for each venue - whilst leaving my zero-latency analogue EQ intact 🔥👨‍🍳

Unreal! Had my St John standard set up on the Plec machine recently. Along with a proper initial set up for the 8 string from . Thicker gauge on the 8 string & C standard finally set up properly with a recut nut, intonation & fret shaping across the whole neck 🥹🔥 let the clarity commence 🥰🎸

Had the opportunity to audition these Angry Boxes from . Cool little feature of the stand thread mount underneath, so you can place them in the perfect spot for your critical dissection of the middle stufffffff 🫣‼️ - had some fun experimenting with distances on a stereo pair and mono collapsing things. Scary stuff 👀 thanks to for hooking me up! 📍

By no means an inexpensive way to glue your mixes together, but this crazy box, gives some magical results well worth an audition in any serious studio set up. Special thanks to for the opportunity here 🥹🎟️

With more tubes than the London Underground, this thing features dual mono & stereo compression settings and the option to flip to Lateral/Vertical (nodding back to the vinyl realm) where the compression works in a mid/side mode. The fixed time constants acting as attack and release times covering a wide array from 0.2ms A / 0.3 release to the max program-dependant last 2 constants with the latter position 6 covering a release time of 0.3 seconds for single peaks, 10 seconds for multiple peaks and 25 seconds for consistently high signal levels. The DC threshold has a gazillion detented positions which do this constantly moving knee + ratio as you sweep it clockwise 🔁 .

Do I know what all the k***s do? Absolutely not 😂 but it feels like it’s all about using your ears for the inspiration to get creative with modes & compression. Feels as if it’s impossible to make this thing sound bad across the board; whether drum overheads, subtle ballad mix bus stuff, or kick + snare dual channel duties. The transient shaping is truly only a thing of the analogue world 🌎 ⬛️

The thickness from this pair of 5052 shelford series mic pre’s is unreal.. with the external (5way) PSU, the additional voltage and form factors in this design provide more headroom and depth of saturation!! Especially a fan of the red silk, which adds some clarity & punch to the mids in guitar world, like using new strings, but with some strange harmonic voodoo that pushes them forward in the mix, but retains the same peak volume.. 🪄

A couple of different EQ points allow for some musical cut and boosts, which differs from the shelford standalone channel EQ mids too. Both are wonderful. Choose your fighter 🥷🔥

Definitely one of the most overlooked aspects of any audio set up. Recently I discovered how drastically different DI/instrument input channel strips affected the tone and resolution of a simple guitar / bass or acoustic pickup! I’m going in on DI & channel strip A/B comparisons. HERE WE GO!!! Here’s the simple but elegant RNDI with custom Rupert Neve-designed transformers and class-A biased, discrete FET amplifiers 🤓 - thanks again

I use the 1176 variations on every mix, but still don’t feel like I’m getting the best out of the hardware version? 🤷‍♂️ anyone have any tips on making better use of this?! I don’t care how many popular this is, if I can’t justify keeping it, I’ll sell it on! The catching vocal peaks at 12:1 into a hardware La2a is currently the best method Ive found.. otherwise, what am I missing?! *SEND HELP* 😂🤓

Haven’t posted for a while, sorry nerds 🤓. But recently came across the worlds cheapest API 512V so had to add it the collection. Even though the neve desk is the heart of the studio, I occasionally used other pre amps, like the 5024 from RND and I absolutely love 512’s especially with the little fader 🎚️ addition to this iteration. Added a little blank panel beside each “channel” so I can do some recall pointing as well. ⬅️ +12db everything… 🔥🩵

When the drummer from , the screams of Simon from & the wall of doom from & come round for ☕️ & 🎹. I could have wished for nothing less… My first ever noise complaint 🥹🖤 I’m so overwhelmed with joy, considering the hall used to be a function venue for bands.. but now we’ve tipped the local community over the edge. Babies 👶 literally asleep in the nursery, whilst 2 actual, real-life kick drums storm away above them. But the community has spoken! (Swipe right for reasons 😂). Concluded with, “no evidence was found”. A thorough investigation, proved in fact, this was all a dream. 🪄 A dream, I’ve now framed and soon to live on the studio wall of fame 🔥 thank you 😚

Dangerously tempted to pick up a 4x12 after hearing this monster last week. 🫣 Paired up with a hard panned ku5a & shure sm7b, with a thin 80’s off axis 441 in the centre, with a bit of UAD capitol chambers. Had a little n22 room mic off the left side (furthest away from the drummer side) and a lot of automation for levels from a standard e945 vocal mic. Huge!! 🥳💪

This mic from ku5a, has absolutely blown me away recently on the live session, on ’s guitars. Obviously helps to have ridiculously good source tones, but the rejection from the rest of the band, was unreal. Right up against the dust cap on a 4x12 , gave the ku5a a super tight and controlled low end, with a crazy level of definition on distortion - that felt balanced & compressed at the same time. I pretty much always use a 57/u67/coles 4038 or TLM193 in a balancing act of level and phase.. but now it’s this AEA Ku5a through the 512V (3:1) with a tiny bit of 57/or a condenser for some more glassy/clean tones, with maybe a mono coles room mic close by & you’re absolutely laughing. I genuinely can’t believe how good this mic is. 😩🥹🖤 Again, with the suggestion 🔥👌

Full rundown of our set up with @lonelythebrave and @youmaycallmemo on drums 🥁 for the next bunch of tracks. We ended up swapping a few things around; opted for the Neumann TLM 193 on toms, moved the Coles blumlein pair around & further back. Used the Tama superstar 80’s deep snare for a couple tracks, and the worldmax black brass (Ludwig black beauty copy ish) with the @snareweight #vegan pineapple 🍍 leather m80 😚 paired with @bigfatsnaredrum filters for a couple parts on verses etc! Special thanks to @studiocarepro as always for helping me out with various mics & the new @triad_orbit_official stand. 🔥 And to the incredible heads from @evansdrumheads / @daddarioandco. Even got a chance to use the rattler from @promarksticks on a section of the music! 🤠☕️

High end monitor (in/depth) overview.. In today, the @barefootsound mm27 gen2. My Story

Currently private digital/analogue hybrid audio-based studio in Walsden (20 miles north of Manchester & 20 miles west of Leeds), in the Pennine countryside. The recording studio hall aspect is roughly 9m x 8m x 4.5m apex, with ambient reverb great for drums, strings, brass & piano. The studio is annexed to a 4-bedroom house, with gated parking facilities.
