The wolf catcher becomes a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

Ba Yunusa M'bai, also known as Choronix, who always called himself a wolf catcher, turned out to be a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Yunusa is someone who claims to be a freedom fighter, but he is not. In reality, he paints himself as a freedom fighter while pursuing his own interests.

The majority of the students who voted for him believed that whenever he came to the office, he would stand for the students' interests. But all of that was a lie.

During yesterday’s protest, Yunusa showed his true colors. He told people the reason he couldn’t go against the union was that if he did, they would suspend him. Did he forget that a true freedom fighter always puts the public's interest first?

Please, Mr. M'bai, change your name from "wolf catcher" to "wolf in sheep’s clothing."

THE CONSTITUENCIES ARE EAGER TO HEAR THEIR VOICE (Open Letter to My MP— Honorable Member of Parliament for Lower Baddibou).

Dear Hon Kemo Gassama,

As a concerned citizen and a bonafide native of Lower Baddibou constituency, your consistent silence in the parliament has triggered me to craft this letter as a reminder that your electorates are concerned and eager to hear your voice in the parliament, proactively demanding to address their challenges. Considering the myriad challenges your constituency (Lower Baddibou) is encountering, we expect you to be our voice in the parliament, representing and expressing substantial issues that the aforesaid constituent continues to grapple with — ranging from deplorable health care system, lack of storage facilities for our women vegetable gardeners, poor road network, inadequate clean drinking water for those in remote areas of the constituency, inter alia.

Therefore, anytime crucial parliamentary debates are ongoing, you're highly expected to add your voice, expressing the wishes and aspirations of your people and making your presence felt. Mind you, you're voted to actively represent us and not to be passive without any impact while enjoying the plethora of privileges attached to the position you occupy. The position is not, in any way, a business enterprise for enriching oneself and one's family. Instead, it's a position meant for altruistic individuals who care about the plight of their people and are always eager to defend and fight for their welfare. As a representative, your cardinal priority should be centered being responsive to addressing acute challenges of your people.

Individually, we are aware that MPs are not unilaterally responsible for the development of their constituencies; however, they're obliged to closely work with their local goverment councilors to effect substantial development in their constituencies, utilizing their Constituency Development Funds. In essence, you're voted to represent approximately over 10 thousand people. This is a rare privilege accorded to you, as there are numerous natives of LB constituency who possess the qualification, competence, and experience to fill the position. Your election to serve in the position vividly manifests the fervent confidence and hope that the people of Lower Baddibou have in you. Thus, the least honorable thing expected of you is to fulfill the promises that you made during your election campaign. We want to see the water projects as promised to some of the villages in the constituency.

To sum it up, Hon. Gassama, we want you to break the silence in the chamber. We want to see you contribute in the parliamentary debates , we want to see you raising issues that your constituency is facing. This is what we voted for. Therefore, we want to know your stands on the current Judicial officers Remuneration and Entitlements Bill and National Assembly members Salaries and Pensions Bills 2024. In the same vein, we're eager to know your stance/position on the recent Female Ge***al Mutilation, regarding the repeal of Women's Amendment Bill.

To conclude, as we have the common goal of making our great and restoring its lost glory, I would like to take this opportunity thank you for your boldness to represent us in this auspicious assembly, and to assure you of our strongest support in your endeavors to usher unprecedented development in our beloved constituency.

Yours truly,

Concerned native of Lower Baddibou Constituency!

What did Kepside do that could lead to his arrest? The Gambian police should definitely know their job. Kepside did not verbally abuse or assault anyone, and there is no law in The Gambia that dictates what kind of songs people should sing. When we speak out, some people will say, "Oh, Gambia is a Muslim country." But if that's the case, then music in general should be banned in The Gambia, because music in any form is considered "haram" in Islam. The Gambian police should release the youth and let him enjoy his life. He didn’t force anyone to listen to his songs.

According to Talibo Kongira, Lawyer Darboe has called President Barrow in Mankamang K***a and begged for rice for their annual Gamo.

If Lawyer Darboe did that, he could also have possibly sent people to President Barrow for the President's consideration of his wife's and daughter's land.

President Adama Barrow's recent accusation against Ousainou Darboe, claiming that he begged for land allocation for his family, raises serious ethical concerns and underscores a troubling tendency towards disinformation in political discourse. Such allegations not only misrepresent an individual's actions but also attempt to tarnish their reputation without substantial evidence.

It is crucial for leaders to uphold integrity and truthfulness in public statements, as misleading claims can undermine trust in institutions and deepen political divisions. Rather than engaging in personal attacks, President Barrow should focus on constructive dialogue and addressing the pressing issues facing the nation.

Ousainou Darboe's flat rejection of these allegations further highlights the need for accountability in political rhetoric. It's essential for all political figures to promote transparency and to engage in respectful discourse, ensuring that the public is informed by facts and not unfounded accusations. It is imperative for our democracy that we challenge misleading narratives and hold leaders accountable for their statements.

THE GAMBIA ARMED FORCES REFUTES ALLEGATIONS OF TRIBALISM AND POLITICAL INTERFERENCE IN THE RECENT PROMOTION OF SENIOR OFFICERS
1. The attention of the High Command of the Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) was drawn to an ill-informed and malicious publication by the social media platform, Open Gambia Platform (OG) with the headline, ‘A GROUP OF SENIOR GAMBIA ARMED FORCES OFFICERS (GAF) DECRIED POLITICAL INTERFERENCE IN THE PROMOTION OF MILITARY OFFICERS!’ which was published on Sunday 21 April 2024. The article purportedly contributed by ‘ANON’, states, amongst other issues, that it ‘received allegations of political interference and tribal favoritism in the promotion of military officers to the rank of Colonel in GAF from a group of senior officers’. The article went further to state that ‘the disgruntled GAF officers alleged that the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Lieutenant General Mamat Cham with the Director General of the State Intelligence Services (SIS) Ousman Sowe and the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, Honourable Seedy Njie, who also doubles as the Chairman of the Standing Committee on Defence and Security ... conspired to restructure the GAF by placing the Non-Jola and Mandinka Officers, whom they perceived as loyal to their political interest, in a strategic position within the Armed force in anticipation of the withdrawal of the ECOMIG Troops after the completion of their assignment when the implementation of the Truth and Reconciliations (TRRC) recommendations are concluded’.
2. It must be noted that these allegations are not only calculated narrations to soil the reputation of the GAF Command but irresponsible, preposterous, baseless and should not have warranted a dignified response from GAF. However, to avoid ill-informed and dangerous conclusions by well-meaning Gambians, we would kindly oblige and clarify a few issues on the ill-fated article by the social media platform. This is with a view to refute the allegations by unpatriotic, disgruntled and unscrupulous elements who wish to sow seeds of discord within the Armed Forces and the general public.
3. The GAF wishes to inform the general public that owing to the existence of ten (10) vacant positions within its structures which were supposed to be filled by senior officers at the rank of Colonel, a request was submitted to the Ministry of Defence (MOD) for subsequent approval by the executive. Consequently, upon receipt of executive approval, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Lieutenant General Mamat OA Cham, constituted a Board/Committee to nominate officers eligible for promotion to the rank of Colonel in accordance with specific Terms of Reference (TOR). This was in line with the Security Sector Reform (SSR) and transformation of the institution since the dawn of the new political dispensation under the President and Commander-in-Chief (C-in-C) of the Armed Forces His Excellency Adama Barrow. It has to be re-iterated that promotions in the Armed Forces particularly for the rank of Colonel and above are a privilege and are usually highly competitive. After a comprehensive and exhaustive process by the Board, the Defence Headquarters, Gambia Armed Forces submitted a list of senior officers that were eligible for promotion to the rank of Colonel to the Ministry of Defence (MOD) for onward transmission and approval of the President and C-in-C.
4. Therefore, the GAF High Command wishes to state that there was no interference, be it on political or ethnic lines in the process leading to or after the selection of the senior Officers for promotion as alleged by the ill-informed and malicious report. In fact, a close scrutiny of the names in the above list contradicts the assertion by the said baseless OG report that the promotion was informed by ethnic/tribal considerations. It must be reiterated that, since 2017, under the leadership of all previous and current Chiefs of Defence Staff, the respective Commands of GAF have consistently constituted Promotional Examination (PROMEX) Boards to oversee the promotion of Officers who are due for elevation to the next rank. All these PROMEX Boards, without exception, have been guided by strict and specific TORs, the TACOS, the GAF Promotion Policy (recently drafted) and other relevant administrative documents regarding promotions. Once they are constituted, no CDS has ever interfered either directly or indirectly with the deliberations and outcomes leading to the recommendations of the Boards that were convened under his directives.
5. Therefore, GAF condemns in the strongest terms the allegations of tribalism and/or political interference against the CDS and/or other personalities within and outside GAF as claimed in the ill-intentioned report by the social media platform. It is our conviction that such publications can only be with the sole aim of using the obnoxious tribal and ethnic card for ulterior motives. It is rather unfortunate that, in the twenty-first century some Gambians would be so myopic to judge each other based on parochial considerations such as ethnic or tribal lineage. The allegations in the said article are just the figment of the imagination of the author who is, apparently, either a coward or is not too proud of his identity and goes only by the sobriquet – ANON, whatever that means!
6. It must be emphasised that, since the dawn of the new dispensation in 2017, GAF has expended enormous resources and time to sensitize its Officers and soldiers/ratings as well as the general public against promoting vices such as tribal and ethnic sentiments/ identities within its ranks. Suffice it to state that GAF wishes to pride itself as the bastion of unity and the last line of national defence and unity. Accordingly, as an institution, GAF wishes to emphasise that it does not have a policy that classifies any of its personnel along ethnic, religious or partisan lines. Consequently, making such disturbing and baseless references to the outcome of an internal administrative process that is in line with international best practices could not only be described as divisive but callous and dangerous to say the least. Additionally, it is pertinent to clarify that, henceforth, postings, appointments and most importantly promotions in GAF would strictly be based on merit, commitment and competence, amongst other criteria. This is to ensure that GAF provides qualitative services in terms of human security to the citizenry in line with the ideals of the SSR. This is a vow that was taken by the new Command of the Armed Forces under the leadership of the Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General Mamat O Cham.
7. Our doors have always been opened for clarification and we are more than willing to provide further undisputable facts on this matter. To this end, GAF craves the indulgence of all patriotic Gambians to continue to insulate this national institution and its members from ethnic sentiments and politics – a commitment it has resolutely made since 2017 to date. Hence, persons with nefarious intentions must avoid attempts to infiltrate the GAF under any pretext to advance ulterior motives that are not in tandem with the lofty republican ideals of the Armed Forces.

Age and Leadership

In recent times, the debate surrounding the eligibility of individuals, particularly politicians, based on their age has gained momentum. Some Gambians believe that Ousainou Darboe, a seasoned politician, should not contest for election due to his old age. However, it is imperative to challenge the notion that old age is a deterrent for effective leadership, especially in the role of a president. History has shown that many leaders, despite their advanced age, have demonstrated remarkable wisdom, experience, and resilience in steering their nations towards progress.

Old age should not be perceived as a hindrance to effective leadership, especially in a presidential role. One prime example is Nelson Mandela, the revered former President of South Africa. Mandela assumed office at the age of 75, becoming a symbol of reconciliation, justice, and transformation. His presidency showcased that age can be accompanied by invaluable experience, sagacity, and a deep understanding of the complexities of governance.

Another exemplary figure is Winston Churchill, who became the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom for the second time at the age of 76. Churchill's leadership during challenging times, particularly World War II, demonstrated that age can bring about a profound understanding of history and a steady hand in times of crisis.

While age alone cannot determine effective leadership, it is essential to compare and contrast the actions of both young and old leaders. Young leaders may bring energy, innovation, and fresh perspectives, but they may lack the seasoned judgment and experience that often come with age.

In contrast, older leaders may have a wealth of experience, having weathered various storms throughout their careers. This experience can be crucial in making informed decisions and navigating complex geopolitical challenges. Old age does not necessarily equate to stagnation; rather, it can be a source of stability and a reservoir of historical context.

Moreover, some young leaders have been associated with impulsive decisions, lack of patience, and a tendency to prioritize short-term gains over long-term stability. On the other hand, older leaders may possess the patience to navigate diplomatic waters, a quality that is often crucial in international relations.

In conclusion, the idea that old age is a deterrent for effective presidency is a misconception that should be dispelled. Leaders like Nelson Mandela and Winston Churchill have demonstrated that age can bring about a unique set of skills and perspectives that contribute to successful governance. While it is essential to consider the capabilities and policies of any candidate, age alone should not be a disqualifying factor. The focus should be on the individual's leadership qualities, vision, and commitment to the well-being of the nation. Embracing leaders of various ages ensures a diverse pool of experiences and perspectives, contributing to a more robust and resilient democracy.
