Britain's History in Objects - The NHS Ambulance

Ambulances are emblematic of and essential for any health service. The UK’s National Health Service, founded in 1948, is no exception. We all need to get people to hospital when they need to be there
through illness or accident; we all need to get the infirm and elderly safely to and from their appointments or for courses of treatment for chronic illnesses.

The ambulance service in the UK dates back to the late 19th century, with locally funded services such as the Metropolitan Asylums Board operating in the London area in 1897.

Each year about one in 20 people in the UK will use the accident and emergency ambulance service. However, responding to 999 calls makes up only 10 per cent of the total number of ambulance service journeys – ambulances are also involved in non-emergency work through the patient transport service.

MIDDLESBROUGH A COLOURFUL PAST shows the former Post Office Chambers on Marton Road.

Until Middlesbrough got its own post office in the 1840s, post was brought daily from Stockton in the Tees Coal Company's letter bag.

Seen here in 1912, the impressive post office buildings opened in September 1879 and today survive as part of the revitalised Historic Quarter.

Britain's History in Objects - The Daleks, 1963

The Daleks are a terrifying extra-terrestrial race of mutants as portrayed in the British science-fiction television programme Doctor Who and conceived by science-fiction writer Terry Nation.

It was the N**i regime in and before World War Two that inspired Nation: his Daleks were violent, merciless and unforgiving cyborg aliens, who accepted nothing other than unquestioning compliance and were bent on the conquest of the universe and racial purity by the extermination of what they regarded as inferior races.

Daleks have become as synonymous with Doctor Who and have been cited as an element of British cultural identity. A 2008 survey indicated that nine out of ten British children were able to identify a Dalek correctly.

Britain's History in Objects - Oxford English Dictionary, 1884

The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) is the historical dictionary of the English language, published by Oxford University Press. By tracking the historical development of the English language it provides a unique, comprehensive resource as well as describing usage in its many variations throughout the world. The Dictionary features entries in which the earliest ascertainable recorded sense of a word, be it current or obsolete, comes first, and each additional sense is presented in historical order. Following each definition are several brief illustrative quotations.

Work began on the dictionary in 1857, and it started to see the light of day in 1884 when it was published in unbound fascicles as a work in progress with the name of A New English Dictionary on Historical Principles; Founded Mainly on the Materials Collected by The Philological Society. In 1895 the title The Oxford English Dictionary was first used unofficially on the covers of the series.
