A poem from my book "Poems for Our World"
Refugees
Amidst the wailing winds of woe they tread,
Refugees seeking solace, dreams unshored,
From lands once warm, now cold in heart and head,
Where strife and fear relentlessly roared.
In shadows cast by borders yet unkind,
They journey far, on paths of hope they roam,
Through nights of anguish, seeking solace find,
A place to call their own, a distant home.
Their weary feet, like dancers, mark the sand,
Each step a testament to strength and will,
Their spirits soar, but shackled by the hand,
Of fate's capricious touch, they journey still.
With eyes that mirror sorrow, loss, and ache,
They long for safety's sanctuary shore,
A haven where compassion's arms embrace,
Where dignity and love reign evermore.
In trembling hearts, they hold their memories dear,
Of lands they left behind, now far away,
Yet in their dreams, those memories appear,
Like whispers of a long-forgotten day.
Oh, let compassion bloom, a sacred bloom,
And kindness be the beacon they can see,
For refugees, like petals cast in gloom,
Yearn for a world that's boundless, fair, and free.
Fear and desperation may we disperse,
In empathy and grace let hope be conveyed,
So may our hearts embrace, not make worse,
The refugees who seek a safer shade.
Let's build a bridge of love, not walls of stone,
And welcome those who seek a hopeful start,
For in the shelter of our hearts, they'll own,
A sanctuary, where they'll heal and chart.
