We are proud to present our third issue, Issue 03: Power.

We often talk about the power of architecture and places. But it is rarely the architecture we talk about. Architecture is as powerful as the stories, memories, and emotions it evokes.

In this issue, we look at the interrelation between public space and the power of history, politics, community and activism in Bulgaria, Beirut, São Paulo and Hong Kong, as well as stepping into the technology world to explore the alternative of 3D printed objects and virtual space.

As with our previous editions, Issue 03 will rely completely on the support of our readers to be printed. If our target is reached within one month, the issue will be sent to print and delivered to your address if you have pledged.

Follow the link to our website to find out more and back our campaign with a minimum amount of £10. With your help, Issue 03 can reach you at home sooner.

Huge thank you to our supporters, article and cover artwork contributors and editors that made this issue happen.

Although university cities thrive with life and bring in seas of new students every year, in cities like Cardiff the once uncluttered skyline is now populated with vertical student housing to accommodate rising undergraduate numbers. Whilst this prevents overly student-populated areas, does it accidentally strengthen an alienating divide between students and locals?

The development of the new high-rise student accommodation in Cardiff never stops. Will they help take some burden off the areas overfilled with students, or will it cause more harm than good?

Do we approach futuristic design the way we used to?

Future-proofing buildings always should be about the individual, and how architecture can be fitted to support the later stages of life. As an aging population, millions of people will be living in homes unsuited for limited mobility or wheelchair use by 2030.

It's time to treat accessible design as a requirement, and not simply an optional add-on.

"The relationship between architecture and death is as old as history itself, but its arc does not necessarily bend towards justice."

Read Simeon's article discussing how architecture can bring light and comfort back into the last stages of life.

Amidst so much talk about the architecture we live in, we often forget about the architecture we die in.

As the new university year swings round, we're resharing our story about the dubious circumstances of moving into your first student house. First up, the ol' terraced houses.

As the new academic year is about to begin, Cardiff welcomes more than 60,000 students once again. But as we stress about textbooks, coursework, and meeting new people we will work with for the whole year, there is one additional burden that students have to face that often goes unmentioned – look...

Does architectural design facilitate a little madness? Could the spaces we create reflect the world of Alice in Wonderland, without boundaries and whimsy? Perhaps as designers, says Arooj Ahmad, the key is to embrace the madness.

Interior and product designer Louise Campbell turns to the idea of Wonderland as a source for inspiration for the IMM Cologne Furniture Fair to create an ideal house of the future.

What happens when a historic landmark is damaged? Following the fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in 2019, we asked: Should it be rebuilt, or was this the time to imagine something new?

Do memories rely on the past or are they purely driven by our own personal experiences ? As an afterthought of the devastating fire that engulfed the Cathedral of Notre Dame, do we embrace the present with open arms or do we aim to recreate a memory of the past ?

In between naming and shaming practices with gender pay gaps, disproportionate female staff ratios and the movement, we're asking why females in architecture are still being categorised into their own groups, and as "female architects".

“Women in architecture” is getting more publicity than ever, however are we tackling the root of the issue or simply helping the discrimination in the workplace by singling women out?

Following the two years since its opening, The Vessel has been in the news several times, and not in a pretty light. We look back at this story from when it opened in 2019 about what makes it "everything that public space shouldn't be".

As the new Hudson Yards’ centrepiece ‘Vessel’ opens its doors, it is time to reflect on the landmark; its symbols, its context and its overall lack of clarity

Has modern architecture neglected the way we design around death? We look to the projects of Killing Architects, the relationship between architecture and death, and the way it fits into the contemporary city.

Amidst so much talk about the architecture we live in, we often forget about the architecture we die in.

"When bombs fell on the city and collided with asphalt, they left unique floral-patterned craters on the streets. Hundreds of them were filled with red resin to commemorate places where three or more people died in mortar fire. These became known as Sarajevo Roses.

Now, over two decades since the war ended, only about two dozen remain. Together with the city’s rebuilding and the streets’ repavement they started disappearing, like wounds that just needed time to heal."

Read about the two sides of the Sarajevo Roses in our article, as part of our limited series with TU Delft.

“People have to stop thinking of [Minecraft] as a game. It’s a CAD tool, and as such, it is the most widely used one in the world.” – James Delaney, director of BlockWorks.

The company's humble beginnings began as Minecraft builders, working on the buildings and landscapes of game servers, and now has clients ranging from Disney, Microsoft and RIBA.

Does BlockWorks progression into the architecture world prove the potential for VR and gaming technology to aid architecture?

Virtual Reality could realise architecture’s loftiest aspirations. But at what cost?

During its construction after WW2, the Aylesbury Estate in southeast London was often referred to as "slums in the sky". It was set to be demolished in 2009, and replaced with the typical gentrified schemes seen over London today.

Read about Sarah's experiences as an Aylesbury resident, and her retrospective views now as an architectural student.

The internet offers seemingly endless possibilities- whether it’s another Zoom date with friends, posting on social media groups, playing games, or sharing our work online- but at the same time, there’s a certain sense of emptiness that comes with limiting your social interactions to a screen.
