Primary school places

By September 2024 Lambeth will have hundreds of spare places in the reception classes of its primary schools - like many other London boroughs.

Have your say, by Friday 14th June, on the council's suggestions for dealing with these vacant places.

Schools are funded by government on the number of children at the school. So schools need to be at about 80% or more full to balance their budgets.

Last week of weekly wheelie bins

The borough wide fortnightly waste collection of residual waste in black wheelie bins is starting on Monday 15th April.

Check the chart in the letter to find out when your black bin will be collected after this week.

Or check online here:
https://www.lambeth.gov.uk/rubbish-recycling/check-your-bin-collection-day

Recycling wheelie bins and food waste will be collected weekly. So will optional garden waste bags.

The more waste is recycled the less it costs local tax payers. Residual waste is £168 a tonne but recycled waste is only £32 a tonne

Long term plans for West Norwood town centre

In 2022 over a thousand objections from local people and businesses were made to the council over its long term policy plans to rebuild the heart of West Norwood town centre.

Lambeth has revised the plans - the rebuild area is smaller and the number of proposed new homes reduced to between 150 and 170 .

Comments on the "soundness" of the plan must be sent in by 3rd May. For details see:

Suspension of LTN

The Low Traffic Neighbourhood (LTN) scheme for Streatham Wells has been paused from 1pm today 7/3/24 .

During the trial LTN the traffic on boundary roads, including the A23 (Streatham High Road) and Streatham Common North has been blighted with frequent roadworks by Thames Water and other utilities causing serious delays to bus services in Streatham at peak times.

Cllr Chowdhury says:
"Suspension will stop more significant delays occurring when the investment in the A23, including new segregated cycle lanes, starts later this spring and allows time for bus priority measures to be implemented all along the A23."

Potholes in your road?

To get potholes on Lambeth roads fixed quickly please report online here:
https://forms.lambeth.gov.uk/HIGHWAYSTEST/launch

Potholes on Transport for London roads ( usually red lines) can be reported here:
https://streetcare.tfl.gov.uk/

The Met office says February 2024 has been the warmest in England and the rainiest in southern England since records began in 1836. So its not surprising to see more pothole in our roads !

More parking zones

Lovelace Road used to be full of cars parked by people commuting from Tulse Hill station. See photo, taken at midday on a weekday last month, now Lovelace Road is in the Tulse Hill H zone.

Controlled parking zones (CPZ) make more space for residents to park by stopping commuter parking near transport hubs like stations and removing abandoned /untaxed vehicles.

Residents pay for a parking permit to park anywhere in their zone.

For details of Lambeth's CPZs see:

Autumn leaves

Most of Lambeth's street trees have finally dropped all their leaves and the council has extra people working on leaf-sweeping the borough's 200 miles of roads.

In the meantime some of Lambeth's Neighbourhood Champions are getting neighbours together to help remove fallen leaves from their pavements,

If you’d like to get involved and need to borrow some brooms, shovels, hoes or bags, please email:

Delays at Tulse Hill one way system

Another Thames Water mains burst means the Brixton Hill stretch of the busy A23 is closed to vehicle traffic for most of the coming week. All A23 traffic will join the south circular road along Christchurch Rd and Tulse Hill road causing congestion on our one way system at Tulse Hill.

The burst in a deep 24in main happened on Saturday 16/9 around 7.30am and affected a wide area. Water was restored late on Saturday. The Thames Water reference is BB 32052755.
