Beamish Museum explored with an iPhone. There were three cottages open to the public in the 1900's pit village part of the living museum. This cottage was occupied by a family who's head was a winder (operating the winding equipment which took men and equipment down to the coalface and coal back up, a very responsible job so good money and accommodation was the reward) .

iPhone pix again!Great ride out today, ending up in Eyemouth. This fantastic sculpture in the harbour is called 'Widows & Bairns', it commemorates the 129 fishermen lost in the great storm of 1881 resulting 78 widows and 187 children they left behind. The detail is amazing, such a powerful piece of sculpture!

Beamish Museum explored with an iPhone. As mentioned before, iPhone quality if pretty amazing under good lighting conditions, this photo illustrates the limits they have. Very dull light so it had to use a high ISO 640 (this is no problem with a full frame digital camera which you can push easily to 1600 or even 3200 ISO before it starts to go bad. On an iPhone ,640 has resulted in a very pixilated image most notable on the face. Interesting to explore the limits though!

I've been a photographer in Edinburgh now for 34 years, I've seen a lot of changes in the industry but the most dramatic has been the introduction of the Smartphone. A lot of the 'bread and butter' jobs have gone because the quality of images smartphones provide is, for some, good enough for use on social media. I am constantly amazed at what these little devices can do, the main benefit being always at hand when you see something that has to be photographed like 'Dom the Northern Rocker' who I bumped into while out on a ride. He looked like he'd just appeared out of the 60's with his authentic Cafe racer/Rocker motorcycle and clothing. There's still a lot smartphones can't do but getting the image recorded is the main thing even when you don't have your Pro gear with you! Taken with my iPhone 12

Jedburgh cafe. After swapping salutations to each other, "nice day for being out on the bike" etc with this chap, I was actually on my bike about to leave when I thought 'nah, can't resist taking some photos'! Dom was more than happy to pose for some shots, then as we chatted I just started to take more. I didn't have my camera gear so just had to use my iPhone 12, decent results I thought!

Lighting 101 with small flashes. I photographed a friend's lovely Z1R a couple of years ago. I can't remember if I'd taken light stands for this shoot but I ended up just putting the flashes on the ground, one either side. This gave a nice shadow on the background with enough light 'spill' to light up the side of the bike, I'd usually use a third flash for this but didn't want a second shadow on the wall, it would have spoiled the photograph.

"why are you using a flash when the sun is shining?" been a while since I've been asked that. Bright midday sunshine is not the best time to be photographing folk, if the sun is shining on the subject they'll be squinting and have heavy shadows lining their faces. if it's behind them their whole face will be too dark lacking detail and contrast, photoshoot is not an answer here!. Fill in flash is essential for achieving a good well lit portrait🤓 I photographed these chaps just before they went out racing on their sidecar outfit.

In the first pic if you look in the background you can see smoke coming from Neil Mason's VFR750 as something in his engine lets go, half a second later he got the message! Metadata shows 6 seconds between the first and last frame, things happen really fast in a crash although it seems a lot longer if you're in the middle of it!🤓

Lighting 101 with small flashes. Bright midday sun is not a photographers friend usually, it creates so many problems and can massively influence the composition of a photograph. Here I have the sun behind and to the left of Ian and used a flash on camera for 'fill' flash to light his face which was in heavy shadow. Rob Mac Memorial classic meeting at East Fortune, Ian came over from Ireland with his mates to race this lovely XS650 racer.

Lighting 101 with small flashes. This was a fun shoot. I set up at the side of a small country road, not too busy but there were still cars passing by and they weren't hanging about! This is another three flash shoot, a small flash on the left and right of the subject and a one right next to me, I was positioned on the other side of the road. No light modifiers were used just bare flash, this helped set up time and got rid of the chance of the wind topping over one of the flashes.

Lighting 101 with small flashes. Taken at the Bruichladdich Distillery Maturation warehouse which dates back to the late 1800's. I used a 12" soft box resting on a whisky barrel on the right and on the left a flash with a grid to keep the light beam narrow to add a bit of rim light. Time was limited and is a good example of the versatility of the small flashes taking only a few minutes to set this shot up.

Lighting 101 with small flashes.
When I started working for the newspapers we didn't carry around big lighting rigs. You simply used the flash on the camera (in the early 90's I still used the Metz 45 hammerhead flash) and turned the it's to bounce light off the ceiling, this is like using a massive umbrella and gives a lovely soft light. A very good technique when you're up against the clock. Add in some natural 'rim' light coming from the window and you get a nice editorial portrait.

Lighting 101 with small flashes.
Sometimes you don't need to use flashguns, when lovely light presents itself go for it! This was taken of a friend at Toppings bookstore which is in an old Georgian Bank building at the top of Leith. Big windows with plenty of light bouncing off the interior of the room gave me plenty to play with.

Lighting 101 with small flashes.
Interesting one this, it was a sunny day and I was at a classic car meet. I wanted a bit more dramatic light so underexposed by about a stop then used my Speedlite off camera held to the right to kick light onto the subject. There was no light modifier on it, just bare flash so the light is harsh but it suits the subject I feel
