Tomorrow - 2 February - sees the first meeting of Grow.

Online networking for small business owners.

How's it different from other networking groups? In some ways it's not - networking is about people getting to know, like and trust one another.

We're committed to ensuring Grow inspires and encourages people who run small businesses.

We want to find the best ways of making online networking valuable and interesting, without being boring or 'samey'.

Part of making that work will be by having the right people there.

The new online networking group is called Grow.

Because it's all about help small business owners:

- grow their network
- grow themselves
- grow their business

It's weekly, Thursdays at 10am. For now, it's free.

I'm running it in conjunction with a business leadership coach, Andrew Dornan.

Update about the new online networking group I'm setting up.

It's in conjunction with Andrew Dornan, a leadership coach based in Northern Ireland.

First meeting is Thursday 2 February at 10am.

It's on Zoom and it's free.

Andrew and I have both had poor experiences on online networking. But we believe it has amazing potential, because it's makes networking easy to access, over a wider area.

Our new group will involve experimenting with different approach to online networking. We want to learn what works well for small business owners.

Update on Bizzy Networking.

First - thank you to everyone who's expressed an interest.

I'm a big fan of online networking. It can be easy, convenient, and allows you to meet people from further afield.

I'm involved in a plan to launch an online networking group in February.

I'm also a fan of in-person networking. It's easier to mingle, to have casual conversations, and the people you meet are more than a face on a screen.

My current plan is to revive Bizzy Networking as a monthly, in-person networking group, based in Weymouth. It may even include another beach walk (like the one in the photo, from 2019).

It will be separate from the online networking group (which doesn't have a name, yet).

I hope this makes sense. Watch out for more messages about networking.

Sort of.

It might not be called Bizzy. It will be online, not in person.

But it will be a great place to network with other business owners, and to learn.

I've teamed up with a business coach (also called Andrew) and we'll be running this together.

When did you last celebrate business success?

I did, earlier this week, along with dozens of others from across Dorset.

It was the wrap-up for the current phase of support for small businesses in the county. The EU-funded work of the Dorset Growth Hub is winding down.

Over the last few years their projects have:

- helped to create hundreds of new jobs.
- delivered millions in grants and investments.
- helped thousands of small businesses get established and grow.

It wasn't all good news. We heard from some business owners about their current challenges, including:

- high energy costs in manufacturing.
- difficulties in recruiting staff, particularly younger staff.
- confusing rule changes about exporting to Europe.

Despite the problems so many of us face right now, it was great to celebrate the success of so many.

And to know that others are just beginning their own business journey. At the event I met a young lady just starting out on her journey of self-employment, as a photographer.

Well done to the Dorset Growth Hub team, and thank you.

Copywriting tip:

Write more about what's interesting or helpful to your future customers.

Write less about what's interesting to you.

People read news and info that affects their life, so be sure to prioritise that, particularly in social media and on your website.

Keep words and sentences short when writing for business.

You're not looking to win prizes for literature.

You're looking to win customers.

Be quick. Be clear. Be direct.

Use lots of white space. Short sentences, lots of paragraph breaks.

It's easier to read a line surrounded by white space than one locked into a block of text.

I'm a big fan of business networking. It's brought me so many wonderful clients over the years.

I believe many businesses, particularly the very smallest, are missing out on the power of networking.

For the last few weeks I've been working on a survey of business networking groups in Dorset - my home county.

Expect to hear me talk more about the value of networking in the future.
