TOP FRENCH SHOW TO BROADEN INTERNATIONAL HORIZONS

France’s top coarse fishing show has taken an important step to increase its international appeal.
The fishing website peche.com has reported that the Carrefour National Pêche et Loisirs (CNPL) show - Clermont Ferrand - has appointed Fred Jullian – described as a true star in world fishing – to its team of expert consultants. The collaboration is aimed at meeting the expectations of new generations of fishermen and offering an enriched experience for show visitors.
“The arrival of Fred Jullian marks an important step in our ambition to make the CNPL shine well beyond its usual borders,” says a spokesperson for the organising team. “With his international expertise and deep understanding of the sector, he will be instrumental in attracting new audiences and strengthening the reach of the event, both in France and abroad.”
Jullian’s various collaborations with brands that include Navicom, Ilex and Gunki and his approach to sport fishing has established him throughout the industry, says peche.com. His objective for CNPL will be as a facilitator for both exhibitors and visitors, creating opportunities for visibility and engagements for brands and maximising interaction with enthusiasts in order to make their presence at the show more memorable, says the organiser.
CNPL is traditionally the curtain-raiser for the fishing season in France and last year attracted 15,000 visitors. It will take place from January 17 to 19 in 2025 at the Grande Halle d'Auvergne , Clermont-Ferrand.

It has been announced that Henderson, who joined the world’s largest fishing tackle company over 28 years ago, is leaving the fishing trade to join Holland & Holland, a UK based gunmaker and luxury clothing retailer based in London. He will take up his new role as General Manager early next year.

AUSTRALIAN STATE GETS $18M RECREATIONAL FISHING CASH BOOST

The recreational fishing tackle industry across Australia is set to benefit from more than $18m(au) of funding for the sport in one of the country’s states.
The Minns Labor Government says the funding to New South Wales is part of its commitment to making recreational fishing more accessible to everyone and ensuring it continues to contribute to the local economies of the communities in the region.
The investment includes:

$5 million for recreational fishing enhancement and improving access;
$3 million for Fishcare Volunteers, schools education, fishing workshops and communication with recreational fishers;
$3 million for research and monitoring programmes;
$3 million for detecting and preventing illegal fishing and protecting fisheries resources;
$2 million to restore and improve fish habitat;
$2 million for a digital and over-the-counter licence payment system.
In 2023/24 more than 400,000 fishing licences were issued with revenue from these sales flowing into the Recreational Fishing Trusts and then back to fund programmes and projects that support and grow recreational fishing activity and the environment for vibrant fish habitats.
Tara Moriarty, Minister for Agriculture and Region NSW, said: “Recreational fishing is fun for families and small local regional businesses and that is why the Minns Government is keen to make good investments in programmes and infrastructure that will ensure this activity can be sustainably ongoing.
“As well as enhancing fishing, many of these programmes help drive economic growth in the regions through fishing tourism and business opportunities, while also providing significant ecological and productivity benefits. This year our world-leading fish stocking programme has seen over 5.3m freshwater and marine fish stocked in NSW waterways, providing a boost to fishing, conservation outcomes, employment and local economies
“Fishing enhancement programmes like the Offshore Artificial Reefs and fish attraction devices (FADs) deliver quality sportfishing opportunities and are a popular drawcard for locals and tourists alike.
“To ensure that our fishing stocks and habitats are not depleted or over fished, we also invest in compliance and administering fishing rules so that a small number of bad actors are not ruining it for everyone else.”

EU TO BAN CHEMICALS USED IN MANUFACTURE OF FISHING JACKETS

The European Commission is to ban the sale of a substance that is widely used in the manufacture of fishing rain jackets.
New measures under the REACH Regulations – the EU chemicals legislation – is banning the use of undecafluorohexanoic acid (PFHx4) and PFHxA related substances which are said to pose an ‘unacceptable’ risk to human health and the environment.
The PFHx4 restriction will formally come into force 20 days after the publication in the Official Journal and take effect after a transitional period of between 18 months to five years, allowing time for a safer alternative to be found.
The restriction will ban the sale and use of PFHxA in consumer textiles – such as rain jackets . The EU Commission said: “This restriction is an important step forward in reducing PFAS emissions as PFHxA is often used as a substitute for another already banned PFAS. It is based on the scientific assessment of ECHA’s committees and has successfully passed the scrutiny of the European Parliament and Council.”
PFAS are called ‘forever chemicals’ because they do not breakdown in the natural environment. Used in many industrial processes and many consumer products, PFAS requires special attention, taking into account the large number of cases of contamination of soil and water – including drinking water.
In the past 20 years the EU has taken increasing action to tackle PFAS pollution. As indicated in its Chemical Strategy for Sustainability, the Commission is committed to take a comprehensive set of actions to address the use and contamination of PFAS under REACH, the EU chemical legislation, and under other environmental and human health specific legislations.

SPORTFISHING INDUSTRY URGES INCOMING US ADMINISTRATION NOT TO BAN LEAD

Sportfishing industry leaders in the US are urging the incoming Adminstration to avoid implementing restrictions on traditional fishing tackle such as lead sinkers and jigs on public lands and waters.
A coalition of the nation’s leading sportfishing organisations, including the American Sportfishing Association (ASA), delivered a raft of recommendations that could play key roles in keeping angler access and fisheries management an ongoing priority in the White House and the next Congress.
On the subject of traditional tackle it called for continued efforts to be made to improve angler access while keeping fishing tackle flowing off the shelves. This included a request to avoid restrictions on tackle. “The restriction of lead tackle would reduce access and put an unreasonable burden on the sportfishing industry and anglers, particularly those on low income,” it said.
“Recreational fishing generates $148 billion for the US economy each year and it is important for our elected officials to understand what issues our constituency cares about,” said ASA’s Vice President of Government Affairs, Mike Leonard. “Our recommendations give them a roadmap for how they can best support us.”
The 20-page proposal contained recommendations from 17 organisations representing more than 3,000 businesses and the nation’s 57.7m anglers has been distributed by the ASA.
Titled THE FUTURE OF SPORTFISHING: Policy Recommendations from the Recreational Fishing Community is a collaborative effort aimed at guiding science-based conservation, growth in trade and commerce, increasing access and education and advocating for the rights of anglers.
“This is the first time in memory that such a diverse group of recreational fishing community organisations have come together in support of a suite of policies like this,” said Leonard. “It shows the breadth and opportunity that the next Administration and Congress has to prioritise recreational fishing in their agenda and we are excited to see these recommendations come to fruition.”

ORVIS ANNOUNCES REDUNDANCIES AND STORE CLOSURES

Orvis – the oldest mail-order retailer in the US – has announced plans to lay-off 112 employees, close a number of stores and discontinue its catalogue.
SGB Media reports that the Vermont-based company is to shed 8% of its workforce to enable a smaller and more agile business. In the US the company operates 70 retail stores and 10 outlets, with 18 in the UK. It has not disclosed what stores will be affected by any closures.
In a statement obtained by VTDigger, Orvis President Simon Perkins, said: “Orvis is in a period of business evolution that requires us to think differently. Over the course of our 170-year history, the company has experienced similar cycles, but today’s challenges are new and they require us to be bold in order to continue sharing stories, experiences and products that inspire our customers well into the future.”
In his statement regarding those facing redundancy, Perkins said they will receive two months of full pay and benefits, additional severance pay and assistance with health insurance and job transition services. “The people we are saying goodbye to have made indelible impacts on the brand, their colleagues and the lives of our customers. We are investing the time, care and resources needed to honour and support them through this process,” added Perkins.
Orvis claims to be the oldest mail order retailer in the US, having produced catalogues since the late 1800’s. The lay-offs come as the business, founded in 1856, announced in January that it is moving it headquarters in Sunderland, VT, to smaller offices in Manchester, VT, to support ‘an evolution of a hybrid work environment’.

ACQUISITIONS AND NEW STORE OPENINGS BOOST ANGLING DIRECT REVENUES

The UK’s largest fishing tackle retailer delivered strong growth during the key second quarter of trading with store revenue in the region increasing 8.4%, largely due to newly acquired stores and those opened during the period.
Angling Direct’s revenue increased by 5.6% to £45.8m with UK sales growing 6.2% to £43.5m, a 7.6% increase on the previous comparable period. The MyAD customer loyalty programme saw membership increase by 50% in the first half to over 330,000 members – up from 220,000 in January 2024 – with over 75% of UK revenues now transacted through the scheme.
During the period Angling Direct completed three acquisitions and opened two new stores to take its footprint to 52. It also secured a new logistics facility to support further roll out of own brand ambitions beyond 2025.
Steve Crowe, CEO of Angling Direct said: “We have delivered significant progress in the first half and I would like to thank the team for their continued dedication and hard work. We successfully completed three acquisitions and increased our store estate to 52 while also opening our first European store in the Netherlands.
“Online sales continued to increase and our focus on availability during peak season resulted in UK online business taking a greater share of the higher ticket item market.
“Looking forward, I am pleased that the strong trading has continued into the second half with revenue in the first two months increasing 19.8% on the same period last year, The solid foundations that we have established ensure that the group is well placed to take advantage of the significant growth opportunities available in the UK alongside prudent and controlled expansion in Europe, which will significantly grow our addressable market and support our longer-term growth ambitions.”

GSM OUTDOORS ANNOUNCES SECOND ACQUISITION IN A WEEK

Just days after announcing the acquisition of K&E Tackle, fast-growing GSM Outdoors has added another US brand to its increasingly growing portfolio.
California-based Roboworm, a manufacturer of high-quality custom-poured worms, has joined GSM. Founded in 1989 by Harvey Stamp and his son Greg, the bait has become a soft plastic staple in the fishing industry.
“When you think of impactful soft plastic brands in the bass fishing space, you can’t have the conversation without talking about Roboworm,” said Crispin Powley, GSM Senior VP of Fishing. “Equally as iconic as the Senko from Yamamoto or the Rat-L-Trap from Bill Lewis, the straight-tail Roboworm has a place in the tacklebox of every bass angler. We consider ourselves fortunate to bring the brand under our roof and aspire to add innovative designs and unparalled distribution”

EUROPEAN TRADE BODIES UNITE IN FIGHT FOR FUTURE OF SPORT

Two of Europe’s largest recreational fishing trade associations has joined forces to present a unified voice in the fight to secure the future of the sport in the region.
The European Fishing Tackle Trade Association (EFTTA) has agreed to work alongside the French fishing industry association GIFAP (Groupement Industrie Française Articles de Pêche) in a union it hopes to extend to include other associations within Europe.
EFTTA representative Gerard Bakkenes said: A big thank you to Benoît Mayolle and Stéphane Sence for their great support in making this collaboration possible. The French fishing tackle industry is a specific market with its own rules and structures. To achieve a common strategy at EU level, it is essential to have a close partnership.
“By joining forces, both EFTTA and GIFAP will have a more significant and effective impact.”

SWEDISH EYEWEAR BRAND PLANS PORTFOLIO EXPANSION

Leech Eyewear surprised visitors to its booth on the opening morning of Angling International LIVE with news of a merger that has signalled the start of a ‘new adventure’ for the ambitious brand.
The company showed off products from fellow Swedish brand Headbanger Lures on its booth as it revealed the launch of its House of Brands initiative that will grow the business through the addition of niche brands and companies within the sport fishing market.
Leech is one of Scandinavia’s best known fishing sunglass brands, but its owner and Marketing Manager Sebastian Lissbro, told Angling International it was important that it acquired businesses within the mainstream of fishing to grow within the market. “Eyewear is not a bread and butter product for tackle shops. It does not get the full attention and is not seen as important as rods, reels, line and lures.
“To grow in the business we need have the bread and butter products and that is the thrust behind our House of Brands. We are looking for companies that are unique and manufacture products that set them apart.”
Lissbro added that Leech is looking for acquisitions and mergers to add its portfolio. “We are super excited to be putting our foot on the throttle – things are going to happen fast.
“Leech is a small player in a big pond. Fishing is a very traditional market, but we are doing something different and see opportunities in the sector.”
He added that Leech has a long-term goal to create a platform in the US and the addition of Headbanger may set it on the way to achieving that goal. “It has developed a lot of traction in the US since 2017 and its experiences and distribution platform could benefit our efforts.
“The US is a difficult market – it is like 52 countries. It is impossible to swallow them up in one go. We see an opportunity in identifying a number of states we want to be present in and take it from there.”
Leech enjoyed a successful show in Budapest – adding a number of new contacts which it hopes will boost its presence across Europe – and also going home with the Best Eyewear Award in the New Product Showcase.

NEXT STOP WEIHAI FOR TREBLE-WINNING OCKERT

After a successful Angling International LIVE – during which it won three awards – German tackle supplier and OEM business Ockert, is focusing another important event on the other side of the world.
The company will be heading to the CGC Weihai Expo later this month – one of the largest fishing trade event’s of its kind – where it will have a large booth presenting an array of new lines and leaders for the carp, predator/lure and catfish sectors.
“Angling International LIVE marked the start of the B2B shows and gave us an opportunity to see people from predominantly Europe. The Chinese event will widen that scope globally,” said Jan Willenbruch (left of main picture), Managing Director of Ockert. “We are looking forward to seeing customers, interested parties and partners from across the world.”
The company’s strong line-up of brands – Sportex, CLIMAX and Kryston – all visited the winner’s podium in Budapest following what Willenbruch described as a ‘great reaction’ from visitors to its new products. “They commentated very positively on the quality of the items. And with Ockert, they found all the OEM lines that they were looking for.
“It is not the reason for going to such a show, but it is great to win an award – three is even better. I do believe that it makes a statement about the quality of visitors who commented on the products and the brand awareness of Sportex, CLIMAX and Kryston. We presented a lot of new items for the coming season with mainlines, leaders and rods – it was great to achieve such good feedback.”
Willenbruch added that Ockert has enjoyed a ‘very active’ 2024 and as a result has enjoyed a very positive period despite the general and economic situations experienced in many countries. “We would have loved to see a more positive year as a whole, but the feedback and results enjoyed by our brands strengthens our strategy and we are looking forward to 2025.
“The challenges facing the trade are much the same as last year – overstock paired with generally lower demand and cautious consumption during the uncertain economic and political situation – not the best cocktail before dinner!
“Nevertheless we have a plan for our brands and OEM business. We believe it will take a few months, but I am confident we will see a positive development from Spring 2025 onwards.”
