Imperfectly Perfect launches in Sustainable Fashion Week

Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity is supporting Sustainable Fashion Week from 20-29th September. With 13 charity shops across Buckinghamshire and a new electric van to move items around the county, the Charity is firmly committed to supporting sustainable living. Imperfectly Perfect is a new campaign which promotes those clothes which have small fixable flaws. This week the retail division is launching Imperfectly Perfect across all 13 of its shops. There is point of sale including new posters and tags for the clothes to support the launch.

Head of Retail Lily Caswell says “These pre-loved items have small imperfections, but we think they’re too lovely not to be worn again. We have adjusted our pricing to reflect that they will need a little bit of work to make them wearable again. A cashmere jumper may have a small hole, but a needle and thread are all you need to fix it and give it a new lease of life.”

“This project is part of our role in the circular fashion movement, to keep clothes being worn for longer rather than going to landfill.”

The concept of throw-away fashion should be consigned to the dustbin of history. The statistics around the production of clothes clearly demonstrates the need for change: only 13% of clothing is recycled, the average garment is only worn ten times before it is disposed of and the average life of a garment is only 3.3 years.

According to Sustainable Fashion Week if we repair a garment, it is likely to be kept in use for another 1.3 years and extending the life of a garment reduces its environmental impact by 20-30%.

In the last year, Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity shops saved around 733 tonnes of garments from landfill and Imperfectly Perfect will save more items so that they can continue to be worn. The campaign reinforces the theme for this year’s Sustainable Fashion Week which is The Power of Repair.

Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity shops have themed windows throughout the week to support Sustainable Fashion Week.

Create wildlife havens in your garden this autumn

Autumn is a beautiful time of year, with the last of the summer colour in bloom, leaves turning to gorgeous reds and golds, and cool and crisp days.

We might start thinking about hunkering down, lighting the fire and eating warming wintery dishes, but for our feathered friends and small garden visitors, autumn is a crucial time for survival.

Harsh autumn conditions can be life-threatening to birds and other animals who are on the hunt for warm places to stay and energy-rich foods to help build up fat reserves to see them through the winter.

They rely on our help now when natural food sources and shelters are scarce. Here are five things we can do to help: https://www.chilternviewmagazines.co.uk/latest-articles/create-wildlife-havens-in-your-garden-this-autumn/

What causes Diaphragm pain?

When you are stiff from sitting all day, or stressed from the pressures of 21st century life, it’s really common for your diaphragm – the sheet of muscle that separates your lungs from your stomach contents, and that is the biggest of the breathing muscles – to tighten up too.

The diaphragm is the most efficient muscle for breathing. And when your diaphragm is tight, you don’t breathe as efficiently – so other muscles have to work harder to keep you alive!

But in the ideal world, these muscles should be helping your neck, shoulders, back and pelvis to move – rather than helping you to breathe – and when these muscles aren’t doing their normal job, your neck, shoulders, back and pelvis tend to get stiff and sore.

Restoring function, flexibility and strength to your diaphragm can offload those muscles, and help to relieve the symptoms in your neck, shoulders, back and pelvis! What are the benefits of diaphragmatic breathing?

Diaphragmatic breathing offers several benefits to your body including:

• Helping you relax.
• Improving muscle function during exercises and preventing strain.
• Increasing how much oxygen is in your blood.
• Making it easier for your body to release gas waste from your lungs.
• Reducing blood pressure.
• Reducing heart rate.
• Allows core muscles to work effectively
• Improving your Circulation
• Enables your body’s ability to tolerate exercise.

David does see people have trouble activating their diaphragms; because of issues around the neck, ribcage, pelvis and hips, treatment does help with his practical advice.

Best wishes, David Gray

Dog Agility and a Fun Dog Show

Dog agility and a fun dog show, not to mention delicious homemade cakes and plants, will be just some of the attractions at the Hearing Dogs for Deaf People’s free Plant and Cake Sale on Saturday 7 September at its southern training centre in Saunderton.

Visitors to the plant and cake sale will be able to enter their own dog into the fun dog show, with a prize for, among other things, the waggiest tail. They will also see the charity’s incredible hearing dogs in action as they show off their sound and support skills.

The free-to-enter sale will be held on 7th September between 10am and 4pm in the grounds of The Grange, Haw Lane, Saunderton, near Princes Risborough HP27 9NS. Visitors are welcome to bring their dogs along, but they should be kept on a lead and the charity would ask people to clear up after them.

The legendary sales, which are organised and run by long-standing Hearing Dogs volunteers, Fiona and Rob Daniels, have grown from very humble beginnings into one of the most popular fixtures in the Hearing Dogs calendar. In fact, since they began in 2020, the team has raised a staggering £80,000.

Fiona and Rob bake most of the cakes and grow the plants themselves. However, as the sales have grown in popularity, they have now joined forces with fellow baker Wendy Baldwin and Peter Sheppard, who makes chutneys, chilli sauces and his now famous Cornish pasties.

The Thame Players’ award winners in the Oxfordshire District within NODA’s London Region were:

• Tony Long: The Sylvia Rawlings Lifetime Achievement Award

• Thame Players’ production of Tom Jones, directed by Colin Lee: The Pat Redhead Drama Award for Best Production of a Play or Drama

The impressive award certificates were presented to the five winners at Thame Players’ Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 17th July - see picture attached.
Pam Armstrong, NODA London Councillor, said of the London Region award winners, “Warm congratulations to all our district winners. You have the prestigious distinction to be singled out as the best in your district and are the cream of what London Region has to offer. For those of you who have been nominated for an award by your own society, this demonstrates the high regard in which you are held and how treasured you are by your society.”

Mike Rochford, Chair of Thame Players, said, “Having submitted two candidates and been nominated by NODA representatives for three more NODA London Region awards, we are delighted that all five were winners. These accolades show how much talent there is within the Thame Players’ community and also demonstrate how hard we work to bring high-quality productions and outstanding amateur actors to our theatre. We continue to be proud of being the only dedicated entertainment venue for the people of Thame and surrounding villages.”

This September Rennie Grove Peace Hospice Care is calling on residents and local businesses to step up for the 15th anniversary Chilterns 3 Peaks challenge.

In a nod to the milestone anniversary of the event, the hospice is challenging participants to raise £225 each by getting fifteen people to sponsor them £15. This amount could fund six hours of hospice nursing care in Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire.

Lynne who has taken on the challenge previously and signed up again this year says: “I love taking part in the Chilterns 3 Peaks Challenge. After I was treated for cancer, Rennie Grove put me back together thanks to its counselling, complementary therapy and exercise services. I’m really looking forward to the day again this year. It’s a great chance to get out in the fresh air, enjoy the wonderful views and do something to give back to Rennie Grove Peace, which I credit with getting me back on my feet and able to do such things again.”

THE OSCAR-WINNING LOVE STORY - GHOST THE MUSICAL

OPENS IN AYLESBURY - THU 22 - SAT 24 AUG

Worldwide sensation Ghost the Musical is set for a triumphant return to the stage, opening at Aylesbury Waterside Theatre on Thu 22 August 2024 before embarking on a major national tour across the UK.

Written by multi Brit Award winner Dave Stewart and Grammy award winning Glen Ballard, with a script by Bruce Joel Rubin based on his OSCAR winning screenplay, Ghost the Musical brings all the romance and magic of the classic story to life on stage.

“Walking back to their apartment late one night,
a tragic encounter sees Sam murdered and his girlfriend Molly alone, in despair and utterly lost. With the help of a phony storefront psychic, Sam, trapped between this world and the next, tries to communicate with Molly in the hope of saving her from grave danger...”

Ghost has cemented its place as one of the most significant successes in cinematic history. Starring the late Patrick Swayze alongside Demi Moore, and Whoopi Goldberg (who won the Oscar for Supporting Actress), the film dominated the box office in 1990 and earned an Oscar for screenwriter Bruce Joel Rubin, who has skillfully adapted his screenplay into a musical. Premiering in Manchester in 2011, Ghost the Musical has played sell out seasons in the West End and on Broadway as well as numerous international tours.

A smash hit across the globe, Ghost the Musical features The Righteous Brothers’ Unchained Melody alongside many more terrific songs co-written by Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart.

Casting to be announced.

Windows to the past

As local charity, the Chiltern Society, starts major repair works to restore the historic Lacey Green Windmill, Trustee, Jane Hervé, looks at its importance, and vulnerability.

I consider myself lucky to be a resident of the Chilterns, a place where traces of our rich past can be seen all around us. It is special, and worth protecting. Industry has thrived in our woodlands, on our waterways and on our hilltops for thousands of years. At the Chiltern Society we care for several significant sites, including the Lacey Green Windmill, which is the oldest surviving smock mill in England (named due its resemblance an old man wearing a smock) with machinery dating back to 1650.

Mills were among the first machines, with windmills replacing the need for man, animal, or water to grind grain. Their slow decline, mainly because of the development of steam power to both grind wheat and transport it, lasted for decades. Our Lacey Green mill was producing flour until 1915. The machinery is now too fragile and precious to use, but every year hundreds of visitors climb its four floors to view the mechanism which allowed a single miller to manage the whole process of grinding the grain. Faced with collapse before – and saved by our volunteers – we are now faced with another challenge, as experts once again identified that major works are critical.

This spring we launched a major campaign to raise the £53,000 needed to replace the rotten stocks, fix internal mechanisms and restore the whole wooden exterior. We have been overwhelmed by the hugely generous support of the public and local organisations. It is testament to past renovation works and the unfailing dedication of volunteers, that the mill has stood the test of time, and once again the passionate people of the Chilterns have stepped up to help us tackle the challenges ahead.

Our charity will be busy with the project at the Mill over the summer and still need your help to raise money for its upkeep and repairs, or get stuck in painting the sails.

Follow the charity on social media or find out more how to get involved, donate or visit the mill on our website.

LOCAL ACHIEVERS CELEBRATED AT THAME TOWN AWARDS

On Thursday 18 July, four individuals and two local businesses were honoured for their contribution to the community at the annual Thame Town Awards.

Since 2009, Thame has celebrated the people who work to make the town a safer, more vibrant, and happier place to live. This year, a record number of over 300 nominations were received in five categories - Company of the Year, Service with a Smile, Creative Arts Contribution, Sporting Contribution, and Volunteer of the Year.

This year’s Thame Town Awards event was held at the Thame Barns Centre. Thame Mayor, Cllr Andy Gilbert was the night’s MC.

Here are the 2024 winners:

Service with a Smile – Monkey Puzzle
This relatively new business received nominations for its consistently good service from friendly and welcoming staff and wonderful atmosphere. Many of the business’s staff members were also nominated individually in this category for their exceptional customer service.

Creative Arts Contribution – James McCann
James was recognised for his many years of voluntary work at Thame Players Theatre as lead of the technical team providing sound and lighting. He also oversees health and safety and compliance and upgrades and maintains the theatre’s facilities.

Company of the Year – Morrisons Daily
A vast number of people who nominated this business singled out the store’s young manager, Tyler Fox, for turning the business around, particularly the Post Office counter. Tyler was praised for regularly communicating with the community with updates regarding parcel deliveries and collections and responding to comments on social media.

Volunteer of the Year – Martin Davis
Martin received a whopping 111 nominations - a Thame Town Awards record - for his tireless work as a Community First Responder for South Central Ambulance Service, a role he has held for over 10 years. Martin is considered a local hero. He volunteered over 200 hours per month during the Covid pandemic and attends, on average, 6 category-one calls each month.

Sporting Contribution of the Year – Ashley Roff
Ashley was recognised for walking 41 marathons back-to-back in less than a month, covering an incredible 1085 miles (equivalent to the length of the UK). He broke a toe, pulled muscles, dealt with numerous bites and skin infections, but still continued on his quest to achieve his goal.

Thame Mayor, Cllr Andy Gilbert also presented the:

Special Mayor’s Award to John Hulett
John was the headteacher at Barley Hill School for 16 years. Since his retirement in 2011, he has thrown himself into volunteering and fundraising for good causes. He is a trustee of both Sharing Life Trust, which operates the Foodbank and Community Larder, and the Red Kite Family Centre.

BLENHEIM PALACE HEAD GARDENER’S TOP TIPS TO MAKE YOUR GREEN SPACE LOOK ITS BEST THIS SUMMER

With the summer holidays around the corner, many of us will be looking forward to enjoying our gardens to the fullest - weather permitting.

With this in mind, Andy Mills, Head Gardener at Blenheim Palace, has created a list of top tips for making the most of your green space so it looks its best for as long as possible - as well as a few tasks to tick off while the weather is more favourable:

• Deadheading: This prolongs the life of your displays of roses and other blooms; check the flower beds at least once a week to keep them nice and tidy.

o Andy says: “If you see a bloom that’s ‘gone over’, tap the bunch with your secateurs and those blooms that will start to go over in the next few hours will lose petals, so snip them off too. You’re far better getting those off as well - they’re a bit like an over-ripe banana in a bunch - that one flower will make the others go over quicker if left in place.”

• Watering: Even though there’s been quite a lot of rain in recent weeks, it’s important to ensure that newly-planted perennials, trees and shrubs are getting enough water. Check water butt downpipes and gutters to make sure they’re clear and not topping out. Collect as much water as you can.

o Andy says: “It’s a common misconception that if it’s rained you don’t need to water plants - you may do - remember it's easier to add water than take it away. A quick way to check is if you push a clean, dry finger into the ground or pot and if it comes out with soil on it, that means the soil is wet enough. If you can push your finger in a good 3-4 inches and it’s moist then it’s ok - but be aware that the top inch can soon dry out.”

• Weeding and cuttings: Tidy up around any newly-planted trees and shrubs, feeding and defining them, if they are planted in areas of grass or thick growth try and keep the immediate area around them clear of this, as they are all competing for the same things to sustain growth.

o Andy says: “At Blenheim Palace, we’re also checking ties and stakes on any newly planted trees and shrubs, making sure they’re not getting too tight or rubbing; we’re also starting to take softwood cuttings from things like pelargoniums to give them a head start and to take advantage of the summer warmth and daylight.”

• Lawns: At this time of year, lawns usually slow down in terms of growth, but because of the recent moisture and warm weather they’re still growing. Cut your lawn at least once a week - to keep it short and looking good.

o Andy says: “We keep on top of grass cutting as best we can; if they get away from you, that’s a lot of grass to cut down. When we cut our meadow grass areas we leave the cut grass to lie for at least a week so seeds can get back in the soil and the long cut grass dries out, we then compost the long grass. Many people think a lawn means dark and light green stripes, but you can have a lot of life and colour in there. We have a some fabulous areas of wild flowers and some "jewelled lawns" here at Blenheim Palace which not only look attractive but host an abundance of life - some of the areas that we mow on a fortnightly basis to approximately 3 inches in height have a wealth of low growing wildflowers in amongst the sward such as there’s clover, daisies, birds foot trefoil, black medic and selfheal, all of which are appreciated by all manner of wee beasties.”

• ‘Greenhouse hygiene’: Summer is a great time to tidy and clean sheds and greenhouses.

o Andy says: “Any tender plants that are still in the greenhouse, stick them outside for some sun and rain - it also means getting plants outside that might have pests on them, so birds and ladybirds can feast on them. It’s also a good chance to give the greenhouse a really good ‘summer clean’ - tidy your tools and clean all those dark corners.”

Blenheim Palace’s magnificent Formal Gardens are in a continuous state of change, now being finely curated by visionary Head Gardener Andy Mills who is drawing on the garden’s extensive heritage to bring rediscovered treasures to the fore for visitors - the biggest change to the Blenheim Palace Landscape in over 100 years.

Created over the centuries by esteemed garden designers such as Henry Wise and Achille Duchêne, Blenheim Palace’s Formal Gardens capture different horticultural styles from across the ages. You can experience an extensive variety of features as you wander through the Gardens, including the magnificent and calming Water Terraces, the Duke's Private Italian Garden, the tranquil Secret Garden with all of its hidden treasures, the Churchill Memorial Garden and the beautifully delicate Rose Garden, at its peak in the summer months.

The Gardens are open daily from 10am to 5.45pm - to book tickets, visit: Blenheim Palace Ticket Prices | Annual Passes & Discounts
