Today is my last day of a 13 week job at Envy on Foley Street in London, working for Fulwell73 on a kids show for Sky television. It has been a blast… literally!

Yesterday I started on a new project that has me working in central London for the next three months on a project I cannot currently reveal. Very different from the usual projects.

Today I had the most extreme use of the time warp tool in Avid I have ever done. Running video at 80,000%. That is not a typo. 800 times faster than real speed… kind of nerdy cool isn’t it?

Here we are… the last day of EURO2020. Thanks to Covid, I step out of my edit support and workflow role to sit in the hot seat and help edit the highlights of the final for UEFA, distributed to all rights holders soon after the trophy lift.

UEFA Euro 2020 was always going to be a logistical exercise given the tournament's pan-continent, 51-match, 4-week schedule, but nothing will surely be as tricky as this edition, which was delayed by a year.

In October last year I thought I'd get a new iMac to help with all the work I have been doing from home. I went for the top spec iMac 2020, and then filled it with the maximum 128GB of RAM. The machine was flying...but it would crash pm random things. When ever I would work it hard it was fine, but you would so something like open an email and it would restart. This drove me mad as I was losing loads of time, so spent many hours trying to get support from Apple on chat and on the phone. Eventually it was time to take it in for repairs.

With lockdown in full force in London I was forced to drive 30 miles to a store who could see me. It took them just over two weeks to fix it. Apparently they replaced the logic board which blew when they turned it on. They then had to replace the power supply and another logic board. But I was pleased to have it back home.

It wasn't long before the same thing started again. It would restart when I was in the middle of training sessions, which is always embarrassing. I spent many hours on the phone again to Apple. When they finally asked me to bring it in again.

After two and a half week at the Apple Store at White City and no news from Apple I called to find out what was happening. The guy on the phone told me it was ready and I should go and pick it up. Today I went to the store only to discover it isn't ready. They have put a fourth logic board in it and it is still not right. They advised me that they have decided to order a brand new machine, which will be a few weeks as it has to be built as I got a custom spec machine. I pointed out that in the six months I have owned the machine Apple have been fixing it for more than a month, and it is likely to be at least two to three weeks before I get a new machine.

As I have work that needs to be done they have given me the old machine to try to get by until the new one is ready. Hopefully they will actually call. It is sad as I have been using Apple computers since 2007, and they have always been very reliable. This has been my worst experience ever, and the customer service is matching the hardware experience...
