I had the fantastic opportunity to go back to my old school on Bute a few weeks ago to take pictures of the employer engagement day and to receive the ERS Bronze Award from Lowland RFCA 🙏🏼

I’ve had the privilege of working alongside Lowland RFCA to produce various promotional films for the cadet and reserve forces. Over the years, I’ve taken hundreds of pictures at Lowlands prestigious award shows, which aim to recognise and celebrate the achievements of cadets, adult volunteers, employers, and reservists.

In this video, I talk about my experience growing up on the island and why I joined the Army Cadet Force. I remain in the ACF as an adult volunteer, bringing my skills and experience as a content creator into my role as a media representative for the battalion. I was incredibly honoured to receive the Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) Bronze Award at Rothesay Academy, presented by West Lowland Battalion Commandant Colonel Alan Middleton MBE during the Cadet and Employer Engagement Day at Rothesay Joint Campus on the Isle of Bute.

This award recognises the commitment from businesses to support the Armed Forces, and being presented with it at my old secondary school made it even more special. The event, aimed at fostering connections and showcasing the Army Cadet Force’s opportunities, highlighted the impactful role of cadets and volunteers. I am really proud to continue to contribute to this incredible community and help others experience the opportunities I was afforded through the Army Cadet Force on Bute. 🙌

On Tuesday 30th April 2024, I had the pleasure of photographing Reservists, Cadet Force Adult Volunteers (CFAVs), and Defence civil servants as they were honoured at the Glasgow City Chambers with their Lord-Lieutenant’s Certificates of Meritorious Service.

Recipients from HMS Dalriada, 105 Regiment Royal Artillery, 602 Sqn Reserves, RMR Scotland, Glasgow and Strathclyde UOTC, and 6th Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland (6 SCOTS) received their awards from Deputy Lieutenant Colonel Allan Lapsley, on behalf of the Lord Provost Councillor Jacqueline McLaren.

📸 What a night in March in Glasgow I had, capturing 'An Evening with Graeme Souness' event with special guests Philippe Clement & Super Jack Butland at the SEC Armadillo.

I was right in the thick of it, camera always in hand, capturing the laughs, stories, and the lively buzz of the crowd, who were fantastic. It's always a blast when the atmosphere is as charged as it was, with the Rangers manager and goalkeeper on stage, and Jim White at the helm.

Pictures from the LowlandRFCA award ceremony, held at Edinburgh City Chambers on Tuesday 20 February, which saw recipients receive their Lord-Lieutenant’s Certificates of Meritorious Service for their valuable contributions to both the military and civilian communities.

Five Armed Forces Reservists and two Cadet Force Adult Volunteers (CFAVs) have received a prestigious award from the Lord-Lieutenant for the City of Edinburgh in recognition of their exceptional service.

The annual Lord-Lieutenants’ Award presentations for Reservists, Cadet Force Adult Volunteers and the appointment of Lord-Lieutenant’s Cadets are recognised as exceptional honours throughout the Defence community.

One of the things I'm incredibly grateful for at the moment is always having a new project to work on.

I currently have 5 projects in the post-production editing phase.

5 projects that have been filmed and now need imagination.

Re-edits. New edits. Fun edits. Hard edits.

I shared with a friend a breakdown of how I was planning to tackle this mountain of work, stage by stage.

He said, "I love how organised you are!"

It reminds me of the Eisenhower quote: "Good planning without good working is nothing!"

This got me thinking about how workload can be a privilege, but it can also be a pressure.

It's a privilege to have projects that I enjoy getting invested in.

It's a privilege to be trusted by someone to help bring their story to life.

But it's a pressure to deliver.

A pressure to get it right.

So, perhaps a little advice from Trainspotting director Danny Boyle, which I relate to:

"To be a filmmaker, you have to lead. You have to be psychotic in your desire to do something. People always like the easy route. You have to push very hard to get something unusual, something different."

Here is the story of one of my first-ever work experiences in the creative industries 🚀

Here I am. Aged 18. Youthful 😆 and all excited about getting my first-ever work experience in TV production with STV on their show Live At Five (A Scottish topical entertainment and magazine programme on STV2 in Scotland).

I remember thinking when I first started studying at college… “I DON’T KNOW ANYONE!” 😱

Not a single soul who worked in the broadcasting industry.

There were a few names here and there people would mention, but never anything concrete that led directly to tangible work experience. No nepotism for me, goodness sake!

So, I did the only thing I could think to do. I wrote emails and sent messages to folks who worked (or said they worked!) in production companies and houses in and around my area. People working in production are busy people, it’s a way of life like many other jobs - so I never heard back. Pretty much ever.

I wrote to STV2 who immediately got back in touch and offered a one-week work experience on the show as a runner/autocue operator. Boom, foot in the door. Finally.

This was my turning point - achieved by continuously reaching out until someone responded. I realised that asking for opportunities, showing an interest, asking thoughtful questions, and seeking industry advice is something people want to be asked. So why not be the person to ask them?

I completed several work experiences at STV after this. I went on to complete 11 weeks' worth of unpaid work experience across a myriad of projects, companies, and opportunities.

I have used this method even more after finding work in the industry. It is always useful to ask more questions and find out the bigger picture at an organisation or company. This is something I often do when working with freelance clients as well.

Reaching out to people you don’t know, in the hope they will offer you some help, advice, experience, and even just a small amount of their time will guarantee rejection. Accepting that first will ease the pain that will follow.

This photo was one of the first that marked the start of my journey in HND TV production at City of Glasgow College, aged 18.

Since then, I've been fortunate to expand my skills and knowledge through roles like my current position as a technical operator with the Scottish Parliament's broadcasting team and as a videographer and editor for RangersTV.

I've worked on hundreds of projects with incredible clients, with thousands of hours spent editing and on production. But what often goes unseen is the journey behind the scenes, or when the camera goes away – the editing, the countless hours of refining until you are satisfied it meets your standard.

“The standards you walk past are the standards you accept.”

The final product is what everyone sees, but the journey to get there involves hours, weeks, months, and even years of work and continuous learning.

Without the journey, there is no joy.
