Data storage and processing
Lonestar Data Holdings, a venture-backed data storage and processing startup, is planning a data center on the moon, which it considers an ideal location. “Data is the greatest currency created by the human race,” Lonestar founder Chris Stott said in a 2022 news release. “We are dependent upon it for nearly everything we do and it is too important to us as a species to store in Earth's ever more fragile biosphere.” The moon, he says, “represents the ideal place to safely store our future.”

Eventually, data centers may move from the cloud into space. A startup called Lonestar has raised five million dollars to build small data centers on the moon by the end of 2023. Lunar data centers could take advantage of abundant solar energy and would be less susceptible to natural disasters and sabotage.https://news.climate.columbia.edu/2023/06/09/ais-growing-carbon-footprint/

As research and businesses become more established in space, data storage needs are growing. Vendors are building for the otherworldly conditions and keeping an eye on the moon.

The burgeoning space industry will need a source for data storage, with SSDs emerging as a clear choice -- so far.

Artificial intelligence has the potential to develop game-changing ways to fight climate change — but only if we can find ways to cut its carbon emissions.

Since British mathematician and entrepreneur Clive Humby coined the rallying cry, “Data is the new oil,” some 20 years ago, it has been an upbeat phrase at data science conferences. But in engineering circles, that increasingly includes a daily grind of hardware challenges, and chief among them is how to cool the places where all that data is processed and stored......

The next frontier

Since the time of Aristotle, we’ve lived the aphorism of “Ubi societas, ibi ius,” roughly translated to: Where there is a society, there is law. Yet as Christopher Stott, the CEO of a company building the first lunar data center (read more in Part I) pointed out, “Today, wherever there are people, there is data.”

With more people and tech entering space, space data centers may be more of a necessary evolution than fantasy. Until then, one thing is sure: Space is the next frontier for data.

Despite the rise in space data, nearly all data is stored and processed on Earth. But computing in orbit and in space is around the corner.

Why Data Storage Is Mission Critical For The Future Of Space

Technologies developed for space have provided earthly benefits in healthcare and other critical sectors while transforming technologies into products we use regularly.

So what limitations does Durgin see of cloud and cross-cloud, given that one cloud can’t do it all? Durgin cited her background growing up in the data center, where things were physically limited by space. In such a space, you can only put so many racks in the data center before you run out of space. Even Earth has limited space, she noted.

I know I’m kind of talking crazy, but until we figure out how to build a data center on the moon, we will have to figure out how to take advantage of all the compute capacity that we have across the world,” she said.

We are on it!
